The makers of xTool sent me the D1 laser cutting machine for review and I am highly impressed with this affordable, high powered diode laser cutting machine! This was my first experience with a laser cutter and I have found a new favorite toy..the setup was very simple and once I started using the machine I didn't want to stop. I have engraved so many things around the house:)
I did use the machine outdoors mostly, just be sure to have it in a well ventilated area. The machine did come with safety goggles as well so be sure to use those when watching the laser cut. I have so many ideas brewing for this machine!!!

Thank you, Christy! I love that you might have a dog named Moses also loved that you can engrave a tumbler. I’ve had a glowforge for a year now and I’m super excited to see you have a laser now as well. I love mine….only downfall is I can’t engrave cups or mugs. ❤️

Hi Christy, what a great and informative video. Can you please answer the following: what do you put UNDER the material you are cutting? What do you do about venting? What is the learning curve? Is there a subscription service requirement? You cut/engraved an expansive number of materials; which one do you think this machine was the best at overall? I’d love to hear more. Thanks!

Hi thank you! I didn't use any thing under the laser when just engraving, but did place piece of aluminum sign under when cutting. The laser will definitely cut thru glass so don't use glass under it. I used the machine outside at first, but did engrave inside near a window. There are fumes so definitely need open space or window venting. I learned to use the machine and figured out some quirks about exactly where to place material, and which setting to use with different materials within a day.

The software is completely free, but I did use Inkscape (free also) to create some of the designs. No fees after you purchase. The quality appeared the best on the black coated aluminum card, and I love the idea of being able to engrave on steel and tumblers, I am definitely going to test some more wood products tho!

@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It will only engrave coated metal, like the colored or painted ones. You would need a Cricut or an actual engraving machine to cut thru actual gold or metal.

haven't purchased a laser as yet, but plan to as soon as I know what will work best for me. many lasers mention that they need to have a cooling system? Some come with a water tank. Does the D1 have this?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! No the D1 does not need a cooling system or water tank. The laser is 10watt so you couldn't cut thru thick materials like metal slabs that need a water tank for the slag. I do recommend when cutting to have really good ventilation tho, the fumes are pretty strong. Engraving I do in my house, so hardly any fumes there.

Hi! The website says 8-10mm in one pass... I did cut thru luan in one pass, which was about 3/16". I have seen other videos cut thru 1/2" pine board so with multiple passes probably about 1/2".

Is it possible to work on mugs "with handle" with the rotary attachment???
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can probably cut in images on the sides of the mug...but there is no slot for the handle on the turner so you couldn't turn in with the handle facing down and laser, if that makes sense?

Do you put a mat or some sort of material under the wood you cut so the laser doesn’t cut or burn your table?

I am looking at this one "Makeblock xTool D1 Laser Engraving Machine With Rotary Attachment" cost $849" Would it need to be vented outside?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You will need venting if you are cutting materials. The engraving doesn't give off much fumes so I do that without special venting. When cutting I open windows and doors to outside, and close doors to seal off the rest of the house so fumes don't travel. Hope that helps!

Hey there! I just bought this machine. How do you create files for this, specially the calligraphy lettering? & how do you set the X Tool up to cut out something like this? Thanks!
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I was actually working with mine today. I design in Inkscape (free program). If you are cutting something out I would save the design as a plain svg. If you are engraving, export as a png. Then you can just drag the file onto your Laserbox canvas. I drew some circles in a row and engraved them onto wood. I did this to make sure the machine was aligned. If the circles are distorted, you will need to adjust those back belt screws. I would turn half a turn on one side and try the circles again. When they look like circles your belts will be tightened the same. Hope that makes sense. Also, when you cut something keep you speed on 2. My cuts looked distorted when I sped the machine up. If you slow down to 1 the laser burns your edges too much. Test cut before you cut the actual piece. There is a lot of other things I learned testing mine. A honeycomb laser bed helps when cutting. I got mine from Amazon. I know that is a lot lol! This machines does excellent at engraving that is what I plan to do mostly with it. Hope that helps!

If you have that dog bone how do you line up the lettering on the program when the computer doesn’t have the dog bone image on screen
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi...there are a few ways to do this. I hit the home button on my screen to send the laser back to the right upper corner. Then you can move the laser with the left , right, up, and down buttons to position it over your tag. I fine position the tag until the laser mark is over the spot I want to start. You can also cut out a grid on some plywood that is going to be your base and use it to position items. Hope that helps!

What’s the difference between the 10w and the 5w?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi the 5watt version will only cut thru materials about half as thick, so about 1/16" for materials like basswood, and less for acrylic. I would say the 10watt creates denser, clearer engravings too.

Hey Christy! I really hope you see this comment. I wasn't sure of another way to contact you but first of all, I just want to say that I love your channel and it's very inspiring. I've recently started a channel of my own and so far I only have 11 subscribers. 🙈 Lol. Would you PLEASE, pretty please consider showing your filming setup. Like camera, lighting etc. I'm definitely struggling with trying to find the right software to edit my videos. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to your next video as always! *(fingers crossed that you respond to my comment since this video was posted 2 weeks ago!🤞)*

Hi Megan! Thanks so much for watching my videos! I will check out your channel 😀 Just keep posting and you will eventually start seeing subs! I will try to do a video for you on my setup...I did get my filming lights from Amazon, my camera is Canon 80D, tho a phone honestly works just as well. I struggled SO MUCH with editing software at first...I will give you a tip...go ahead and spend the $60 if you can to buy decent editing software. I use Filmora. You will have to purchase to export your videos but its worth it. Filmora is one of the less complicated editors I have tried. Hope that helps you and best of luck with your channel !!💜
