Now you have me thinking of products I need to stop buying/not buy again when I run out. Black liquid liners with a very thin applicators brush. Those are hard to use for everything except very thin wings ( which I prefer to do with an thin, flat, angled brush instead); I always have problems with gaps in the liner going across my lid, probably because I have half Asian eyes. I love gel liners that come in that little separate pot/tiny jar and I love those retractable eyeliner pencils. The only way I like liquid with a skinny tip is for metallic and glitter liquid liners. Nude eyeshadow palettes. I don't use them and they tend to just sit. I think I gave the last one away. Usually if I buy them it'll be because there were one or two bronze/champagne shimmers that I really like but I've realized that I can find palettes that include those colors but the rest are rosey, or dark and smokey colors that I'll actually use Also, matte shadows. I don't use them much and I have enough. I recently bought some new shimmers as id run out and right now I'm look for an all glittery palette to replace the one I finished but so far no luck. Just NO MORE matters. And lastly red lipstick. I only do darker reds, crimson rather than scarlet is the brightest I'll go with red, darker than this heart ➡️❤. Cool red, more warm, true red, berry red, super dark vampire deep blood red- I have them all and every time I see a color and am like 'ooh I want this red," I have to remind myself I already have it lol Things i need include: concealer, any lip product that isn't a matte lip or iridescent glittery gloss because those are all I have right now and if really like a lip stain or balm stain or to try a lip oil, and a bronzer that works. Of course there are a billion things I want but I'm trying to be mindful, and this channel is a big help for me keeping myself accountable and not buying a bunch of random crap

I love this type of video! In the age of "influencers," it's so important to be aware of what your needs and preferences are when it comes to beauty and just filter everything else out. I'm simultaneously super picky and super broke so I don't generally buy things outside of my aesthetic, but it's always good to have a reminder. It can be so tempting to overindulge when it comes to makeup, especially since, like you said, you can get a beautiful lipstick for $7. Thank you for sharing! I'm so happy I discovered your channel. 😊

Really feeling you on the color palettes. Every new release gets so hyped and people have like 200 palettes. One for each color range or 50 with the same rainbow variants, just different arrangement. WTF. And don't get me started on all that glitter... And I feel like, when am I even going to wear those? To my job? No way. That leaves parties, and personally, I never go to a party. And even if I did, I could probably do with what I already have (neutrals). And if I wanted some extra color I could buy a single eyeshadow that I really, really like.

I really like the makeup look you have in this video. The bright red lip looks absolutely fabulous on you. Also- and I guess this is because I'm a neon eyeshadow, false lashes, purple lipstick kind of girl- I find it interesting that you consider yourself to be chasing after the "clean beauty" appearance in vain because to me you kind of embody that glowy light make-up look. I think, more so than actually wearing only lightweight products, achieving that look has a lot to do with how much of the product you use, what techniques you use to apply them, and how flattering those two factors are on your individual skin type, complexion, and facial shape. In my opinion that's something you're good at, and you've done a good job at figuring out what works for you and how to use it. Then again, I guess that is the goal of makeup unless you're going for a glam look- that "I woke up like this" vibe (most people, it seems are not wanting to look like they caked on their foundation) and I think you've mastered that pretty well considering that you have oily skin and use full coverage face products. You look lovely, honestly. And, even though it's an older one, this is a great video that makes some really important points ☺️

Your comment about light-coverage products is a good one. I personally went away from foundation last year, and chose instead to use a concealer for my base (the Two Faced Born This Way concealer works really well), but I definitely noticed the rhetoric from some influencers regarding full-coverage products being bad, when just a couple years ago they were all the rage. I think what influencers need to realize (and what you pointed out) is that makeup is not one size fits all. There are so many different brands, formulas, colors, etc. out there simply because there are so many people out there using makeup and not everyone likes the same things. I have acne and can get away with spot concealing and a light base. Others can't, or - more importantly - don't want to. And no one should be shamed for their choices.
@shawnaripari3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Other folx have also commented that their preference is for the light coverage and when the matte full coverage look was popular a few years back they felt pressured into using those kinds of products too. It can be difficult to cut through the noise to find channels with similar tastes to your or to not get sucked into trends.

Love an outspoken woman on youtube who’s brave and puts herself out there to voice her opinions. Loving all the content I’ve seen and one things that keeps coming to my mind is GROWTH. Might be a cool video idea on the topic of “beauty/style advice i would give my younger self” because so many changes we’re going through are part of just growing up. also link your IG in bio!

Oh man, I was starting to feel like there was something wrong with me for not feeling like the "dewy" unset look was working for me. Even with my "normal" skin type it would all smudge and fade within a couple hours so I can't imagine what a bunch of light coverage and cream based makeup would do on oily skin. This is a great reminder that just because you see someone online using these things and looking great in front of a camera doesn't mean it looks good on everyone or works once you step away from youtuber/instagram style lighting and go live a regular life. Great content :)

Great points. I agree that wearing a medium or high coverage foundation does not say that you're insecure about your skin or looks in general. I personally don't really enjoy the no make up - make up look on me. I like a solid eyelook. So to balance it out, a nice light layer of medium coverage foundation fits that look the best. A sheer or very light coverage throws the look out of balance. It's very helpful to know what suits you, what you like, what you prefer. So that way you buy what works for you, not for your fantasy self
@shawnaripari2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! It also matters most what you like. A lot of people say things like I don't like that because they wouldn't wear or do that thing for themselves. That's kind of the point of being me (or you). It only has to work for you 😅
@hannahholt25194 жыл бұрын
I loved this video! I completely agree with you on knowing what you like to wear, rather than giving into hype. So many times I’ve been tempted to buy those Colourpop palettes but I know deep down I will never use them! So thank you for putting that into perspective!

Learning what you like can take a long time and even when you do it can be hard to stick with it (like you and the colourpop palettes). I'm so glad the video was helpful 😊

I read somewhere that80% of cosmetics aren’t used after being bought. I hope more people cut down on makeup as most plastic isn’t recycled.
@shawnaripari3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I didn't know that statistic! I also hope companies start packing in more non-plastic options or at the very least start with cutting down on the redundant plastic packaging.

I found you yesterday and watched many older videos, i liked it very much 😃. I have dry skin, therefore I love glowy and fresh looking products. When i started watching KZbin (Beauty) i want all the limited editions and drugstore stuff. And in the last about 3 years I learned, i am not the fancy colorful person, I feel so good as the boring neutral one 😉 (and look younger with less on the face). Now I have only one small drawer (Ikea Alex) left and its more than enough for me. I am looking forward for the next video. Have a good week 🤗

I guess for you, you'd take all my glowy products and I'll take all your mattifying ones 😂 It seems like we've had similar journey's too (and I'm with you on the neutral tones too). I have my next no-buy update going up later today and some fall videos coming at you soon too!

Thanks for vocalising my frustration AND making me laugh at myself in the process. I have a pretty tiny makeup collection (eg only one foundation, setting powder, mascara, and brow thingy and two small eye palettes) that only really began in lockdown this year when I started watching beauty youtube channels for entertainment. But, lip balms ... I have at least 10 now! Crazy stuff cos I only really like two of them. I am learning how easy it can be to get carried away! Love your content, Shawna - thank you!

yes i agree! so many of these things i echo because of my preferences and whatnot, except glowy blushes, i love them! i also have oily skin. i also try tinted moisturizers thinking they'll work for me but then they sit on my skin weird and don't look right. i also don't need anymore lipsticks. i'm always snacking or drinking water/coffee so it's annoying to have something on my lips. and in my previous job, i was so busy i couldn't worry about my lipstick

I'm the same. I never use lip liners and very rarely do I use eye liners. I also never use mascara except on a fancy date with my husband. Now I have one mascara, 2 eye liners and finishing up my lip liners. After I use all that, I'm going to stick with mascara samples, lol. Yeah I accepted I'm boring so I only wear subtle, neutral eyeshadow.
@shawnaripari3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I don't think its a bad thing or that you're boring. You know what you like and now you're able to be really intentional with what you buy. I admire that so much.

for me it’s colorful eyeshadow ( i only like neutrals) and powders in general. they take too long to use up and i thought that i needed to set my face but i have normal/dry skin i don’t need powders (except for my under eyes due to creases and to set my oily eyelids) especially pressed powders. and i’m allergic to lip glosses yet i kept buying them because i used to wear them all the time but now my lips burn with them on i end up giving them to my mom.

Love your opinions! I think we need to track some "boundaries" for ourself, we live in a world full of options, but sometime we get stuck in those. When I realized I only wear matte lipstick and blushes I save ton of money on creamy and shine lipsticks that I never use! Like you I don't use lipliner, I declutter all of them 3 or 4 years ago and never feel the need since then! It's the same with bronzer and highlighter, even if they raise in popularity, I never like that kind of products and I don't own them! Bye!!

i'm so late to this but yes!! i feel like i had the opposite problem tho bc i have the opposite skin type and when i first started watching youtubers everything was full coverage and matte and i remember watching around with the og fenty foundation even tho it was sucking all the moisture out of my face bc i thought that's what i had to wear. now the natural makeup trend is right up my ally and exactly how i always imagined myself wearing makeup. it's really more of a learning curve of figuring out your own preferences in the noise that is influencers.
@shawnaripari3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're so right! You have to somehow make your own with through the trends to find your own version which can sometimes be really hard! I'm still so sucked into the natural look but companies are basically just making new versions and I still find myself thinking I can make that work (lol nope)

Couldn´t agree more, I´m trying to use up trendy products and I don´t prefer or products I have too many of. For me, it´s "colorful" highlighters, liquid lipsticks (I only have two left out of 15) bright neon-ish shadows, and big lashes. In reality, I like some color but muted not bright, I like natural lashes and I much prefer bullet lipsticks I can sanitize.
@shawnaripari4 жыл бұрын
That's so awesome you've figured out what you like and also what you don't! And I remember all those things being trendy at one point or another and honestly owning a few of these things myself! I used to own a ton of bright lipsticks but I never wore them. Thanks for sharing 😊

I've decided to stop buying liquid foundations, esp. full coverage ones. I used to love the porcelain look they gave me when I had acne prone skin. My hormones changed my skin during pregnancy and I no longer struggle with oily skin and breakouts like I used to. Plus, with children I really don't have time to sit and blend in liquid foundation for a few minutes every day. I've started slapping on a tinted sunscreen or some powder foundation and if I do have some more time I go with a stick foundation that still takes less time than foundation. I still love applying makeup but I've found that anything that I have to blend for too long I'm not interested in. Same goes for eyeshadows. I want less pigmented powders or cream shadows that I can slap on and go
