You should make green dress inspired by Scarlett O'Hara, especially if it is made out of green velvet curtains!.

Such a fun project! Unconventional sources for fabric ensure one-of-a-kind projects. An unconventional lining fabric is a plain bed sheet, upcycled. Flat sheets never wear out at the same time as their fitted mates.This video is nearly 3 years old, but so applicable right now or any time. I've sewn lots of miles, but I still find inspiration in your work. Thank you for the lovely videos.

hi angela i have made clothes from second curtains from thrift shops and i’ve used duvet covers for kaftans to wear in the house .Its supprising what people hand to them ,i’m a pensioner with constant pain and i do the kaftans slightly larger than they should be as i can’t raise my arms higher than the bust line so they are easy to get on just for the house i also buying unusual second hand dresses and unpick them to make myself jackets and dresses this has saved me huge amount of money there’s lace. piping,and stones and sequins which i can appliqué on items of clothing you have given me the inspiration to desk my own clothes and using a sewing machine gives me movement to my upper regions of my body as light exercise Thankyuo

I do this a lot. But mine are even cheaper, maybe $10 total per dress or outfit. I find some really cute patterns in fabric at my local thrift store in their bedsheets section (I use either the fitted or top sheets, whatever they have). The fabric is either 1.98 or maybe up to 3.98. I try to keep the cost there and maybe another 5 or 6 dollars in the sewing area for thread and/or zips. I am slowly sewing thru my very large stash of findings and notions. Most of it I use for my 6 year old daughter, but now that I have a dress form I am going to tackle one for myself. So for you sewers out there that are really hard up for sewing budgets definitely try this trick. By the way, the sound is funky in this vid.

@AngelaCostumery
@AngelaCostumery 9 жыл бұрын
MsLifeisLovely I draft all my own patterns so it isn't one available for purchase or in stores. I don't offer print outs/diagrams of my patterns anymore after going through people trying to claim them as their own/sell them. But the bodice pattern is a very simple one piece pattern with darts - if you flip through a pattern catalogue i'm sure you can find something similar!

+Angela Clayton /: just seen this. What a shame other people had to ruin it for the rest of us! Since you are self taught how on earth did you start making bodices on your own? That's the one thing I can't do or find much help on the internet. It feels like everyone has their own Magic recipe and noone wants to share. I make modest clothing (very long and loose) but now I want to make a structured fitted bodice and have no clue how with the darts and the boning wtheck😓 any tricks or main points you like to keep in mind? love your work btw💕

Hi Ms Clayton, I can't help be completely inspired by your passion, skill set and work ethic you have for your textile art! I hope you don't mind... I am interesting to find out more about your amazing talent. I would like to ask do you wear your historical fashions in a modern context? Or do you recycle materials used previously into another unique creation once you've grown tired of that older style? Have you thought of designing and manufacturing the fabric/materials yourself that is used in your garments? Apart from KZbin/other social soft copy media area, are there any other avenues fans may access your work? Have you held an exhibition in a hall or church demonstrating the body of your work? Your work is so stunning, I believe it is worth celebrating in hard copy format, taking the shape of coffee table workbook, documenting your amazing creations. In this way people that don't have access to social media, would be able to pay a one off cost to admire your creations which wold leap off the page for people to cherish. Those that love history and fashion fusion would pour over your works in fine detail without need of the pause button, examining your fabric choices and garment construction and design. I would love to become a fan see your work flourish into textile art career. Congratulations on all your hard work and your fan base. Respectfully Laura-Learnne Melbourne, Australia

I am not a specialist or anything, but this popped in my head: I would check with Ikea if the material has some chemicals in it that would prevent the curtains from burning faster. It was not meant to be worn so it might not be 100% safe for that use. But I hope it is and it's just a cheap, nice material to wear. Great tutorial and a lovely dress : )

Ashley Love I have a singer 191D-20. Sewing over pins isn't a very good habit to pick up (I really shouldn't be doing it!) even with an industrial machine it can mess up the bobbin casing if the needle hits one.

What exactly is bias tape?
@maike__-
@maike__- 5 жыл бұрын
I know this question was asked ages ago but since there is probably still at least one person wondering about it (and i wondered about it for a long time before someone explained it to me) Bias tape is a strip of fabric cut "on the bias" meaning it's cut not parallel to the edges or the grain, but practically a strip diagonally cut from the fabric. This gives the strip a bit of stretch, and (I'm not sure if that's right, could be the opposite too, pls someone correct me) helps the strip from fraying quite as much? Bias tape is typically used to cover the edges of the fabric, by folding the strip around the edge and sewing it down. (It's kind of hard to explain like this but you can find it at the edges of quilts, it's the strip of fabric that covers the edge and sometimes goes all the way around the quilted fabric?) [Also, in case you're German and just struggling with the vocabulary like I was, bei uns heißt es Schrägband :)
@Stettafire
@Stettafire 4 жыл бұрын
@@maike__- Correct it gives it a bit of stretch, also yes, it helps prevent fraying, in fact I think that is the main reason it's used. Confusingly, you can get bias binding in shops that is basically just a thick woven bit of ribbon that was never part of a larger piece of fabric, but you can also cut your own bias binding. Skirts cut on the bias (on at 45 degree angle from the straight grain) will warp because of the weight of gravity on them which is why you should hang the skirt and let it sit over night before you try to hem it. This is because the bias has a stretch to it. Skirts cut on the straight grain don't have this problem, but the hem is subject to more fraying.

Why on earth would you reduce the complexity of construction? Most of what you build REQUIRES all that time, all those steps, and all those materials to be done correctly.

Dinuial Like I said in the video I really love my complicated projects, and I don't plan on dumbing them down or anything like that. But it's hard to film those projects and it's even harder for people to replicate them. The nice thing about projects like this one is that they are fast, easy, and pretty much anyone with some sewing skills can make them. Which some may find a nice change of pace from what I usually post. I'm still going to make big historical projects with lots of steps (I have a few of those in progress right now...) but I'd also like to make other stuff which can appeal to people who don't want to invest that amount of time into making a dress.

Be careful when using commercial interior design fabrics for clothing. Many are treated with substances like stain protectors and flame retardants - things you may not want next to your skin. Contact the manufacturer first to be sure.
