This video is primarily for my friends @JAMSIONLINE for when they run my 413 Wedge on a stand during the break in process. This will also be extremally useful for anyone dealing with a no spark issue on their Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth (MOPAR) Ballast Ignition Systems

The dad over at JAMSI is such a likable guy. I’ve been a subscriber of theirs for about two years, if I recall? Excellent machine work and superb video editing!

I've seen the inside of more engines, this year, than ever before (mostly due to lack of oil changes). WATCHING will definitely be nice!

Brilliant explanation on the ignition system Paul. I wish you were around to explain that as I was just a rookie growing up with these cars. You would of made my life a lot easier back in the day. Wishing you, your family and the SD community a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Looking forward to more video's from you my friend...❤❤❤❤

Paul,I love your truck. There's a company called Davis Unified Ignitions and they make a big block chrysler HEI distributor that is just like the mid to late 70's gm distributors.Just drop it in, run a key on 12v power wire to it and drive away.Could be something you might be interested in.Good luck with your build.

A lot of the guys in my Tin Grille FB page talk about those. In my opinion, it is no improvement over this design as it's all junk Chinese parts these days. The GM 4 pin module and the HEI coil used in that set-up is equally as hard to source for replacement parts as this current design. I see no reason to change it. The guys that love them, love them because of their simplicity, but to me, the system I have is already simple 😁

@@ScannerDanner Of coarse you're right. Especially about parts quality.I'm not a big conspiracy guy but If I were a country and I wanted to take down another country,and that other country relied on me for their basic goods crappy parts would be a good start. As for replacement parts, If you broke down in Bumtickle Nebraska and the only place open was Ed's Auto Parts and Feed Mill on main street next to the diner' He would probably have everything you need for either system in stock. You might have to blow the dust off of the boxes. Simplicity was really the only reason I suggested this distributor. I just thought it would be easier for the guys at Jim's to set up. They are ,of coarse, more than capable using anything you send them Watching their videos will tell you these guys are good. there would be one more upside. When you went to a cruise-in and opened the hood' All the mopar or no car guys would give you the stink-eye. Sometimes I just like to poke the bear.

you do nice work , it would be a neat little package if you had that circuit mounted to a board you could use it to start any engine that used a two wire pick up coil ....

Surprised you aren't going to electronic ignition, there are several great systems. But I suppose these early systems worked for decades just fine. :)
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
This already is electronic 🙂 The other options that are available (petronix or guys love the GM HEI conversion or the worst of them all an MSD system) are not more reliable and parts are possibly even harder to come by. With this system I can go to any parts store and still order what I need. And yes, this system (when understood) is very easy to troubleshoot and is relatively trouble free.

So the bypass circuit is connected to the starter solenoid feed?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
In a sense, yes. The bypass circuit is powered up by the "crank" circuit (hot only in the crank position) and came from the starter relay on some models (like my 78) or the ignition switch itself on others. Does that make sense?

My buddies neighbor came over asking for me to look at his 80’s dodge truck that wouldn’t run. His “mechanic” friend was there I look at it and it needed a ballast. His mechanic friend said I’ll just bypass it and put 12v to the coil. I said the ballast drops voltage and current if u don’t have one it will at bare minimum make the coil fail prematurely and worst case cause a fire and with that engine covered in oil leaks it will burn to the ground for sure. That weekend I go to my buddies house and his neighbor comes over shows me a picture of his truck burnt to the ground saying his “mechanic” friend told me you didn’t know what u we’re talking about so we wired in 12v.

Those old time Mopar ballast resistors were a pita... I bet I replaced several thousand through the years.

On the European Chryslers they were located under the battery tray, we used to relocate them to a more accessible place. One of our customers a fleet operator installed and serviced traffic signals would burn them out in a few months, we used to give them a spare to carry and instructions how to fit.
