Growing up I always thought that my mom and dad were a bit over protective. Not letting me go to sleep overs or summer camp for most of my childhood. Later on I found out that my dad was a victim sexual abuse. And they were doing their best to make sure that they didn't happen to my brother or I. I'm grateful and I consider myself lucky to have parents who looked out for me so genuinely.

I didn't get to do my first sleepover until I was 11. I found out that someone in my family had experienced SA as well. It was only after I'd taken some self-defense courses to counteract bullying and I'd gotten big and strong enough to possibly fight off a predator (or at least escape and call and tell my parents what was happening) that they let me go--and even then, it was with a family friend's mother supervising. They always had to meet the parents first to "feel them out" so to speak. My dad was a military policeman at one time and he was verrrry good at reading people.

I hate to say this but what’s sad is you really can’t trust anyone these days. I know children should not be so sheltered that they can’t have fun but overnight stays are not necessary and not a good idea. I will never forget picking up a check for my husband at a guys house he had done work for and the house was in a really nice neighborhood, it was really clean and well decorated, his wife was beautiful for her age and everything seemed perfect. They had a couple young kids and forgot his occupation but they clearly had money. He seemed very nice. Found out much later he had molested plenty of kids that stayed at their house in the neighborhood.

Years ago, I met a woman on a blind date through a personal ad. She was a divorced woman with a 6 month old baby. I got to her apartment on a Friday afternoon at 5 PM, when we were supposed to meet. She and her baby showed up 15 minutes late. She said that she was out of diapers and formula, so she had to buy some before I took her and her baby to dinner. She said it would be faster if she went alone. So she left me alone in her apartment with her baby while she went shopping. She came back half an hour later, and we then went to dinner. She knew my name and phone number but nothing else. Everything went fine, and I took good care of her baby before she returned so we could have dinner, but I couldn't help thinking that she was way too trusting.

She absolutely knew people like him existed. She'd been abused herself, in the past. And somewhat bizarrely (whilst calling in her CHILD BEING ABDUCTED), she decided to talk about her own rape (from a long time ago) to the operator. I don't doubt it happened. But there's a time and a place to bring it up. When trying to save your child's life, your own trauma may have to wait. So yeah- she knew sexual predators exist. She even admitted noticing his inappropriate behaviour towards Cherish But she kept allowing him to be alone with her, regardless- because she didn't want to 'offend' him and lose out on a gift card. It doesn't matter if she didn't know, that he would be a murderer, too. She knew Cherish was at realistic risk of sexual abuse. That is not acceptable to allow, in any form.

About 25 percent were family abductions, about 7 percent were nonfamily abductions, and only 115 - about 1 in 10,000 of all children reported missing - were "'stereotypical kidnappings,' defined in one study as 'a nonfamily abduction perpetrated by a slight acquaintance or stranger in which a child is detained overnight, transported at least 50 miles, held for ransom or abducted with the intent to keep the child permanently, or killed'". Maybe the data is old, but doubtful much has changed. In this case she handed her kid over to the stranger!

I feel so bad that little Cherish lost her life because she had a mother who put her at risk just because she thought a stranger was going to give her a $150 shopping card. Her boyfriend gave her $100 + this was to pay $40 for her taxi to the airport in the morning to go to California to visit her father. That left her with $60 to buy Cherish some new clothes for the trip. She walked 20 minutes, with her 3 small kids, to the store + bought enough "household goods" that when Cherish asked her to buy a $7 dress Reine, her mom, said she didn't have enough money. Just for the thought of this $150 coupon she + the kids got in his van, she allowed Don to take Cherish into the changing room, + was so distracted picking out shoes for herself that she let Cherish wander off with him supposedly to McDonalds. She had a full cart waiting at the check out, when the store closed, waiting for Don + the "all important coupon". If she had of gone to the store + bought things for Cherish the little girl would have had her dress she wanted + more, been home early, had a good sleep, + got on the plane to take her to visit her dad in California. It was her mother's greed for herself that ended up leading to little Cherish's murder. She bought everything but nothing for Cherish + this money coupon was so important to her that she let this old man be in the presence of her daughters, take Cherish to the changing room with him twice, + finally let her walk off with him. The message that Raine sent to Cherish, by allowing him to be close to her, was that he could be trusted - that's why she followed him out of the store + was tragically murdered. I believe that Reine should have been charged with putting her young daughter's life in danger + ultimately ending her life.

To the procecution, every death penalty case is clear and indisputable. No one sentences a person to death if they are not certain. Problem is, no matter how certain you are, some times you are just completely wrong. Some times, it isn't even your fault. There are plenty of convicted murders that were innocent and were just surrounded by circunstancial evidence and a bunch of coincidences that no reasonable person would doubt. He should have done this with no word to the mother and just said to tell the mother it's from someone that just felt compelled to help out. It's a win for everyone. They don't really turn ppl away much at all, if ever. You can check yourself in any time you want. If you tell them you have a problem, specify what it is, and that you want to stay, you can absolutely stay for a long time. If you tell them your problem is not resolved, they won't send you away if it's serious enough. It can actually be quite hard to get out of them by your own free will at times. What are you referring to? I must've missed that, but I really don't think that's the case.

Thank you for analyzing this case. I’m from Jacksonville FL and the Walmart they were at is one of the worst in the city. Very dangerous with people shooting up drugs and trying to rob people in front of the store. My mom probably wouldn’t let me leave her side and I’m a man in my thirties. It is located near 295 ( the interstate around town), a bus stop, and about 10 min from a community college campus. Also, about 10 min from the airport. It’s a very transient and sketchy area. Sadly, I’ve ate at that McDonald’s many times and now it’s so sad. This is not the place your average parent would let their child go free. It’s all so sad.

In CA, Prop 13 capped property taxes, which had been quite high, and shut down the state hospital system. I agree that this was a huge mistake, but I disagree that the focus was to save rich people money. Many ordinary working class and lower middle class tax payers own houses. Prior to Prop 13, their property taxes kept going up and they had to sell, similar to what is now happening in Texas. At the same time, there was a national trend of court cases giving mental patients rights that are incompatible with hospitalization and treatment, for example the right to refuse medication or treatment.

My sister could never get enough help for schizophrenia. There was never enough funding, enough beds, enough workers. She passed away at age 33 from unnatural causes. So many people are just thrown away by the system.
