I just got back from Nashville today. Went to see a show last night, but also wanted to stop by Porter's grave. I discovered his music maybe four years ago by accident, and I experienced a connection with him and his songs and his voice that I still can't explain. I found his grave marker, and felt compelled to sing this song there. I had already started weeping. It's been a cold, dark couple of days, sun starts going down at five and overcast all weekend. A few seconds after I start singing, the sun shoots out bright and warm on my right shoulder through the clouds for the first time that weekend, sunbeams all around, like a hand on my shoulder. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Moldboard plowing a field late at night in 1980 with an IH 1086, dual rear wheels on the unplowed side and one wheel only on the furrow side, turboed engine wound up, new plowed earth scenting the cool night air sweet as can be, a bite-off of Union Standard plug tobacco in my cheek to stay alert, stars and moon out and shining bright... I turned off the tractor lights while continuing to plow and communed with God while this song played. THAT... for me was the lifetime moment of wholebeing referred to by Abraham Maslow as Self-Actualization at the peak of the Heirachy of Needs. And I was just 17.

Many years ago, someone changed a few words in this song. I do not remember if it was recorded, or a live performance. This: Money can't buy back Your youth when you're old Or a friend when you're lonely Or a love that's grown cold. Became this: Money can't buy back Your health when it's gone Or a friend when you're lonely Or a love that's grown cold. I had never given it much thought until a man that I knew, a self-made billionaire, was facing the last days of his turn on Earth. His money could not buy back his health when it was gone. A satisfied mind is a solid truth. Along with that, develop an attitude of gratitude. Consider another old song, Count your many blessings, name them one by one. Attitude makes a huge difference in our lives.

So sad... And I've been talking about this in bible study... So many make such worldly comments, they praise the singer and ignore what he's singing. And so, they miss a great blessing, I guess this's what our Lord spoke of when He said "Cast not ye your pearls before swine", when you do this are you not carnal? Here brethren, this is where it comes from: Proverbs 30:7-9: 7: Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; 9 feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
@daves54310 жыл бұрын
You can't disregard the singer and the music that bring forth the message. (The Lord was remembered as well as what he said.) There needs to be a bearer of the message whether it's the Lord or us. Remember God was in Christ .......... and hath committed unto us the word of reconcillation..... That "us" means people are going to recognize us as well as the words we say and how we say them. And the words have been said very well here. Who knows how the hearers will receive those words? That's up to the hearers to get blessed by the words or not.
@Senkino5o9 жыл бұрын
Dave Seace Well, no, not really, sure God was in Christ He was and IS Christ, furthermore if I don't magnify Jesus, then them recognizing me is getting in the way, I need to stand aside so they see Him clearly, also the Holy Ghost does the blessing, how will a man bless himself? God bless you.
@daves5439 жыл бұрын
Eli Jackson Are you kidding me? Why study the Bible if you aren't going to share it with any one except your Bible study group? In your Bible study you should try reading and saying what the word says and not add to it. The word says Jesus was the son of God .... not God the son. The point I was trying to make is that we need to share the rightly divided word of God. If we don't many people will never even know that there is a Holy Ghost. Like ...... Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. How did they receive the Holy Ghost? By being baptized in water? NO......study that for a while if you can study it without any preconceived ideas that have been drilled into you head by the organized denomination to which you belong. Sorry for the kind of off topic comments. Great song (whatever it means to you). And great musical talent/ This is real country music.
