I don’t know why I didn’t ever think of this before when you did videos on Club Penguin, Neopets, and other things in that vein but my first thought upon seeing the video was PLEASE DO DRAGONFABLE! I guess because I view these two as rivals/competitors along with Runescape. I thought Maplestory was lame and people who played RuneScape were like people who played wow. I was one of those kids. I was also like “you use aim, thats so lame, I use Skype” before Microsoft which is around the time I stopped using Skype and having friends to speak to on it. I also lost interest in dragonfable about a month after I got the dragon amulet bought for me because I had a good report card. I’m off to rethink my life.

He was a cool friend, and we even exchanged numbers but we didn't get a chance to meet in real life when I was in the states due to distance. I'm a Korean who lived in the US between 1997 and 2001. Maplestory is a Korean game so it was naturally incredibly huge in our country at the time. But I had no idea it was also big in the US. The fun thing is the Korean server also had these legendary players who were always on top of the leaderboard and just like tiger Korean players also had so much speculation about them. Anyways it's pretty surprising to maplestory on your channel and I like it.

As someone who throughly loved MS Im disappointed how they changed it so much that its not even at all the same as it used to be. The first 5 classes will forever be known as legendary. Because you had to be one hardcore mofo to actually lvl them up when it was just them. Players now will never know the pain of having to grind HOURS killing mobs and questing to get to higher lvls.

It's funny how Tiger, Fangblade and suuushi are known as the old school legends, yet before any of them the #1 spot was held for a long time by a player named Xlazhar (Gio) who eventually deleted his account while holding the top rank. I'm surprised how little people know about him but I guess that was before MapleStory started to become mainstream or had a solid ranking system, the first one to hit level 100 was Prodigy who was surpassed by Xlazhar later on who then hit 120 first. Shynobi, Shiriko among others were also close around that time. Interesting video on MapleStory's history, brought back some good ol' memories!

September 8, 2005... that's the day I joined MapleStory. Word of mouth about Tiger on old forums and message boards was actually my inspiration for eventually taking on the Spearman line of warrior classes with my main. This was long before "4th Job" was a thing, before Ossyria was a continent but only four major locations: Orbis, the El Nath Mountains, Aqua Road and Ludibrium. Anyone who was anyone in that game usually played in one of the game's oldest two servers: Scania and Bera _(I was a proud Broan, a server that was only days old when I first joined)._ So imagine my shock when I heard that Tiger had been banned from the game for... ...no one really knows. It was more than a decade ago, and every last lead when trying to find out comes to a dead end. People will tell you that Tiger was banned for hacking, but people often made it their mission to watch Tiger train, sometimes for hours at a time... others will tell you that he had a falling out with his in-game girlfriend, or that he became clinically depressed when his father died which eventually led to his own suicide... and fewer still will try to pass off all three as being true. Without a time machine, it would be impossible to tell what really happened, but even still, the event was so embroiled in needless drama and backstabbing from former friends that not even the original players of the accounts remember the same event going the same way. But regardless, most of the people who were playing the game way back when have up and left, looking for new avenues to explore. Even myself, an avid player of the game for nearly twelve whole years with over thirty characters across two accounts, finally hung up my hat when I realized: "This isn't as fun as it used to be." I and many others spent more money on that game than it rightfully deserved, money we will never see again... all for the prospect of fleeting digital fame in the younger days of the Internet. You either realize your mistake early and quit the game, or the game shows no mercy and unceremoniously kicks you out.

Don't worry about the mula, fellow mapler. I've been using my current main since 2010 (a proud Bellocanian Aran) and I've only given Nexon 30 bucks (actually, I was 12 at the time, so my parents paid it all for me... yeah, no lost money since 2008).

I can definitely agree that the game's colors can really shine when you are able to play this game with other players. EVEN within a year later since this video was posted. I went back to the game this year just to see the majority of the areas being a complete ghost town. I'm honestly glad someone else has the same perspective as me with Maplestory. I missed everything about Maplestory, it was a very social type of game where bosses required you to have a bishop to heal, dispell, and resurrect you, where party quests were actually important and the party quests areas were filled with people wanting to do the LPQ,moon bunny, sleepy wood, the carnival party quest, all these memories are slowly fading and I wish it didn't. I miss when the main transportation to certain places were on those ships where you would wait with people, it's something so small but it made the game feel less empty. It's been 10 years and I just got back on maple after quitting for a year, it isn't the same anymore and it never was. I don't know exactly when it changed, but so many things have been added and removed to the point where maplestory just isn't what it used to be. Weddings are now just a chatroom able to fill 8 people, free market and the stores have been removed, you can basically solo everything, no one does party quests anymore. Everything is solo based now, you don't rely on anyone, you can do things on your own. Maybe that is good for some people, but I missed the old days when it was very friendly and social, I can't say Maplestory is doing well at all. What they are currently showing is that there aren't enough people to even go large grouped things like party quests, instead they do 30 minute events for people to join like bingo or a jump quest. That isn't enough and I still strongly believe that maplestory is dead as fuck compared to a few years ago, it isn't attracting new people. Everyone I know in my server have been playing for a long time, they are in their early or late 20s.. Once they quit there won't be people playing this game.

I joined during beta around 2004 and played on and off after Big Bang for a while, but I had to quit for real when my windows XP computer ran out of storage space LOL. I also watched a lot of fan-made content like maple series and MMVs and made some too. The community was really big and alive before 2013 I think.

Former MapleSEA player here. Didn't expect someone to make a video on "old-school" maplestory in 2019, youtube recommend must have caught me watching some maplestory 2 videos in the past and brought me here. It's a really nice nostalgic trip to see the game in its former glory, and a part of me wishes to be able to go back to the good old days. I remember having to roll perfect 4s on stats that you didn't need when making a new class. I remember when the community was friendly and helpful, competition wasn't toxic and playing together was fun and interactive. Now the game feels like an empty shell, there are just about as many or more players than in the past, but no one paid you any mind as they went about their own businesses. You were surrounded by people, but you still felt alone. Monetization grew to an absurd level, you were seeing a single piece of equipment being sold for thousands of real life dollars. Everything just started to go downhill. This game felt like a lifetime ago, and I'm not even THAT old yet. Cheers for bringing up some sweet memories.

Oh man i remember Tiger, fangblade and Suushi! I didn't know them personally but I played on their server at the time they were charting. Back before bigbang, pirates or even lv 200. When people were .01% away from the level cap, they'd grind on snails at Henesys Hunting Grounds 1 while a crowd of players watched in anticipation for the LV up animation! Man what a dumb childhood lol. I remember the many rumors of tiger's identity. One of my favorites was that he was actually 7-12 Korean guys who play in shifts lol. Another was that the girlfriend supposedly hacked his account and deleted it, but that one didn't run long. Loved the video but you didn't even mention Maple Story 2! It just hit the west last year but the rumors had been hyped for ages, and it's actually pretty cool with the emphasis on user created content. Maybe do a video on that too? ;)

This game was literally my childhood. Been playing since launch. Good times... good times. Now I have a child of my own that plays it that's how old I got lol. I remember those 2x exp cards that activated automatically during certain times after you purchased them and I think they lasted 1 month. I believe they activated for 4 hours daily. I would get 2 of them so that I got 8 hours back to back. I cant believe I set a alarm each day to get up to grind those hours . I dont know why they got rid of the cards tho. It seemed like a good system and it made players want to go online to make use of the card. Seems like it would have continued to be good profit for Nexon.

According to my memory, the rumor I heard was that Tiger got banned for hacking (possibly getting caught on purpose) and then his brother took over the account. The account was unbanned later and it continued being active, but it wasn't leveling nearly as fast as before. There was also the incident where suuushi got hacked by a guy who stalked him on Myspace or whatever for a couple of days and found out the answer to his security questions. Fangblade had a lot of random little legends around him. There were a few stories of people going to Target to buy an NX cash card (Target was the first place that started selling NX cards) and talking to a cashier about it. The cashier would then say something that implied he was Fangblade. Seems completely random, but this story was spreading a lot on forums back in the day.

@hannessteffenhagen614 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was actually one of the weirdly charming bits about Maplestory back in the day - there wasn't really an endgame. There were the high level bosses sure, and you'd have guilds forming around farming those (or rather, farming out the service of killing them because the loot wasn't tradeable), but that was pretty much it. So what did people do? Basically, mostly use the game as a glorified chat room, hang out with friends... and of course the handful of players that just kept on grinding forever to stay on top of the leaderboard. There wasn't really any content much past level 100, and the max level was 200 with an exponential EXP curve so hitting max level at the time was only really possible in theory, in practice there weren't enough hours in the day to do it (hence you had leaderboards dominated by the same people for years without anyone getting even close to max level). The current game is very different, with level progression being somewhat less important (1-200 being basically an extended tutorial, and the 200-275 range while significantly grindier than before they raised the level cap isn't anywhere close to being impossible like the old level cap was), to a large extent swapped out with extensive other progression systems (mostly optimising gear, but also some other character upgrades). I'd say it can still be fun, but the game after revamping its systems several times only superficially resembles what it used to be. It is arguably much more of a game now, and I don't think the old version would do well in today's world anymore; again, basically a big chat room with a casual RPG attached to it - this made sense in the days where internet communication was still a novelty many of us were experience for the first time, not really much of a selling point anymore these days as ubiquitus global communication has become a mundane thing we do all the time. Nor would it work with the remaining community, which are basically all powergamers - set a goal, optimise your path to that goal, execute plan, find something new to do. Of course a game where there are few things to do and those things take a lot of time isn't going to appeal to that crowd.
@ienzio77954 жыл бұрын
Suuushi made it to level 200 back when that was the max, so it was obviously possible.
@hannessteffenhagen614 жыл бұрын
@@ienzio7795 FangBlade did it first. I never said the 200 cap was impossible before it was raised, I said it was pretty much impossible when the game came out. When Fangblade, Suushi and gang got to 200 4th Job, Horntail etc were out. When the game released there wasn't even a 3rd job or Zakum. I think it's sort of obvious but just in case it's not: Obviously adding high level zones with mobs that gave multiple times the exp of the highest level mobs in the game at release, and higher jobs with better skills increased the possible leveling speeds. Even with those getting to 200 only became _possible_, people didn't regularly hit level cap until they significantly reduced the exp curve later on.

the main things I remember about maplestory was that I loved the thief class just because it let you literally fade into the background and explore just about anywhere and as long as you didn't attack enemies wouldn't notice you and couldn't hurt you and the main reason I loved was just because the game did feel endless ;D now from a technical side the main thing maplestory had going for it back when I was playing at least was the sheer wealth of options for how you were going to play and after trying just about every class you really do need to have a plan in place of what you are going to do ahead of time or else you are so going to be playing catch up all the time ;D and another thing I loved is eventually you weren't just choosing your class you were also choosing if you wanted to go elemental as well, just do the regular version of your class, or go completely off the rails and play whole other game which was the character specific play throughs which made maplestory feel more like a traditional game ;D

I'm quite thankful when it comes to fan preservation. Depending on the game; it gives people an opportunity to go through a game they were never able to complete before it was shit down, or a game where social activity was the prime with side stuff you could do that you can keep on doing before the inevitable shutdown. FusionFall Universe, for example; bringing back FusionFall (as FusionFall Retro) gives me the chance to finish an online game I never finished. And then the team that revived that is also working on a whole renewal of the game; a remastered rendition made by the fans of the original game. I think it's kinda important to have these things, no matter what niche of a game it is. It's a game for fans, run by fans, to be enjoyed by the fans of old and introduces an experience for those that never played the game before, and possibly make them new fans of the series.

When I was hitting my years of puberty, I saw an ad for IMVU and immediately went into it. I *still* don’t remember exactly what was going through my head at the time. But I have *very* vivid memories of that game that I’ve repressed. Maplestory existed in the corner of my mind throughout it and I had no memory of every remembering it before Maplestory 2 hit the market, but yeah. It was there. I didn’t care about it. Maplestory 2, however, I had deep connections to, and I’ll never stop being upset that it closed. It was so much more fun than the original, in my opinion.
