Additional Information: read below 1. Correction Mariah was born in 1970, not 1969 as stated in the video. My apologies 2. Because I like to insert interviews that reflect the specific time period we are discussing, some of these interviews are old and have poor audio quality. Please keep that in mind when watching the video, especially if wearing headphones. 3. Lastly, I had a bad flare -up and was really sick when I recorded this episode. There may be sections where my voice is hoarse. Apologies in advance! I hope you enjoy this episode and find it informative and insightful! Have a wonderful week! -BE

I find it so telling that when her mom was asked why she felt comfortable with Mariah, HER YOUNG DAUGHTER, staying up late with older male musicians, she just said that she knew she would be a singer. She didn't say that she knew she was safe. She didn't seem concerned at all for her daughter's safety. I think her mom wanted her fame, but she couldn't have it, so she helped her daughter achieve it, but then resented her for it. How can someone be jealous of their own child?! That is WILD to me.

I used to belong to the the music world (the technically trained musicians, music school, opera, recording, competitions, choral singing, etc. of those sort. The pro music world)... And I can say that I have met a lot of people just like her mom. Like A LOT! Jealousy is pretty rampant there. Everyone knows they're good & see everyone as competition (this also explains her mom's jealousy towards her). That's how it is there. What she said about Mariah staying up late is literally how it is to be a singer. We stay up late until everything is perfect. The rehearsals were brutal! More with the recording or days before the show. Everything needs to be perfect or else no one's coming home. Our time isn't fixed to our homes' curfews but to when our conductor or musical director's find our performance near perfection. We can't call sick, & if we are, you will be treated like you're the weakest link. There's so much sacrifice needs to be done technically that no normal person (not a professional musician living in our world of music) can ever understand. It explains as to why her mom isn't always home... because we are trained to think that our 1st priority is our music/rehearsal/show/group, never our family. It's not the money but the art (I see that's complete BS now!). We rehearse day & night. The abuse was like a normal thing too. You can suffer more if you ain't as perfect as everyone. It is only now (20 years after) that I realized that everything was in fact abuse & not only because our conductor is triggered to get a tantrum for not hearing the perfect pitch he expected to hear. So, yeah, you're right when you said that her mom never care about her safety, but I truly believe that what I just described is what she really meant with her answer. 😊 Just my 2 cents on why her mom's like that. And I totally contradict what the other comment said. It's not mental health issue all the time & it's not narcissism. She's just a musician.

Ugh. I hate how outsiders were judging her for the weird gr00ming behavior of Tommy and saying she was sleeping her way to success, when it's so clear that she was being preyed upon. I know we always talk about hindsight bias and not judging the way things were in the past thru the ethics of the present, but it still breaks my heart to know she was suffering like that at such a young age and people were ready to shame and blame her instead of see that she needed help!

@@silenceisgold758 not saying there wasn't an inappropriate relationship that played a role, but I'm saying we as a society see it purely as a blame game where the victim of a power imbalance is the one taking the blame. For example, Mariah couldn't have been his main reason for his contentious marriage, since he said himself he was "already unhappy". All I'm saying is it's rarely as simple as, "girl sleeps with xyz to get a leg up" and it's been shown time and time again. The framing of it all needs more nuance, especially when we consider how young she was. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Don’t care for her you’re babbling on a couch via the internet about non factual nonsense and gossip fodder. More importantly survived the darkness that could’ve overtaken her if not, consumed her.

THIS is why I can’t STAND people who trust drug addicts, especially with CHILDREN just because they’re “family.” All the talent, money, and love in the world can’t erase that which no child should have ever experienced. Well Mariah was 24 and tommy was 43 when they were together! In the beginning I thought they did last because of the age difference and Mariah's inexperience in a relationship because of her age! But after a watched this video I can see why they didn't last long together it was mainly because of the absence of love and something even psychological deeper and is the Life and the environment she grow up with. And her parents with a disfuncional relationship. Her mother and father where together for 13 years only, her sister living the life she lived, etc! Tommy got married to Thalia(Mexican singer and actress, two years younger than Mariah) in the Year 2000 and the still together they have two beautiful children and their relationship and love keeps growing strong!! Thalia comes from a very solid family bond like the vast majority of Mexicans and Italians, are family oriented! Like Jennifer Lopez, Mariah is the kind of person that would be better without relationship or married to a man!

This is so surreal to me at this point in my life. My grandfather worked for Mottola. I remember in the 90’s right after he retired I was watching Mariah on TV and my grandpa walks in and starts shaking his head. He said something like “my Boss…we had to stop everything for her. Anything she wanted, we had to drop it all and get it done for her. He was obsessed.” I was young and I didnt really get what he was talking about. After that any time he heard me listening to her or watching her on TV he’d shake his head and say some version of the same thing with sort of a sad look. Later on I realized there were a few reasons besides my age that I didnt get it. My mother (my grandfathers daughter) had a 20 year age gap from my father. I didnt understand what implications that had back then. I honestly felt better when I saw it elsewhere. As I got older and I began coming to terms with how my parents relationship started and then once in a while would hear about Mottola and Mariah I started to figure out why my grandfather always looked so upset when he was reminded of her. In the 80s he had seen his daughter (my mom) begin a relationship with my father when she was 19 and he was 40 married and an ad exec on madison ave. Then just a few years later had his boss doing something similar with Mariah and he working under him had to work toward whatever he wanted for her. It was just this tiny part of my childhood and watching this still has me reflecting on Mariah’s experience and also my moms. Of course my mom was no pop star, and its a very different situation but its just crazy to think of my grandpa 96 and still kicking watching Mariah at Christmas time and still shaking his head at whatever he knew back then.

So because she was overwhelmed and mentally exhausted by the biggest person in music (also her ex husband) trying to globally humiliate and ruin her career, they diagnosed HER with being bipolar? Beautiful video! Mariah was like the black sheep in her family. She was surrounded by people that loved what she possessed but, also hated it because they couldn't own it. It was like people propped her up and when she got to big, they would tear her down. It's so sad she had to endure this by herself. I applaud her for still rising, standing tall and speaking her truth. It's always the people closest to you that would hurt you the deepest.

Oh yes, we white people are to blame for everything- look at your black men, they kill each other, call woman whores and bitches, many dont take care of their children and the mother's of their children. Or, are these things a lie? Are only a minority of Black American people like this? White people are not to blame for a person's personal morality and choices. You are responsible for yiur lives. You are men and women who will answer to God, just like everybody else. Have you ever asked an Asian, an Indian, a white or Maori person about their lives?? No, you just want to blame the white man for everything. Do you think white lives matter? Do Red hskinned people"s luves matter? Grow up, do u really believe that being black means being stood on by others for the rest of your lives? The real enemy is Satan.

Listening to Tommy talking about Mariah is so uncomfortable. You can feel the manipulation and gaslighting oozing out of him. He can put a perpetrators spin on it as much as he likes but at the end of the day she was a vulnerable teenager and he was a much, much older man in a position of power over her. As for her siblings, oh my giddy aunt, there’s one thing for sure, you can choose your friends but not your family. I hope that her life is happy now and that she is truly the boss lady she appears to be.

Tommy Mottola: "What didn't work, the way I saw it, was the marriage I was in; and what did work was the strong bond based in music that I had seen between Gloria and Emilio Estefan, I'd seen that bond work for Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, and later I would come to see how it worked for Celine Dion and René Angélil". Since we're making comparisons here, his thoughts should have heavily emphasized the relationship dynamics between Whitney Houston and Clive Davis. That was a relationship that involved talent management, mentorship, commercial success, business... and that's all. Exactly what Tommy Mottola should have seen from the start.

One of my favorite songs of Mariah is My All which is about her affair with another man when she was still married to Tommy. It was amazing, she was very bold and gutsy to make Tommy listen to it and release the song. Which is the right choice! It's one of her greatest hits. And it is so distasteful how he whines that Mariah goes clubbing with her friends, she is in her twenties what the hell did he expect?! She was suffocated and not allowed to express herself. Did he really expect her to not act her age and enjoy life?

I’ve always loved her music, found her voice transcendent, and now I love and respect her even more. Thanks so much for making this video. Mottola was abusive and it’s sad and sick to hear his PR-like denials of it. His statement was very telling, saying he “didn’t force her to sell 10 million albums” is classic abuser language… aka distract from the real issue with “what about everything I did for you?” ps- someone who uses language like they “bust through concrete walls” for someone is scary. I’m so happy she has found her freedom, and her voice, and her self again.

This story resonates with me so much. I was born the youngest of 4 kids, and so my moms boss at the time took me to ward with his wife in order to help my struggling mom. So I grew up with an extremely wealthy white family till my teens, and unfortunately, there was a messy divorce, and my mom wanted me to come back to live with her in the township and there was nothing that could be done as i wasnt adopted. Unfortunately, my black family hated me from day one for having opportunities that they never had. They hated that I acted "white" and that I was still going to expensive schools and getting opportunities that they didn't. To say they made my life hell would be putting it mildly. I basically paid for a decision that happened when I was a toddler. Unfortunately, they all died one by one from poor life decisions and left me with all the survivors' guilt. So I have done well for myself, but I am forever 16 stuck in that trauma.

I was fascinated with her energy, passionate soul and music growing up. It’s very comforting to hear someone I looked up to (& was my first same sex crush) for so long that she too went through similar experiences. Extreme betrayals, violations & control from interpersonal relationships, family chaos & completely estranged from toxic families, always feeling out of place, confusion and experiencing loneliness in being mixed race. It really impacts someone for almost all their life if the two family systems of difference races and their cultures don’t harmonize and especially betray you. You constantly feel like you don’t belong anywhere and are treated differently.. for better or for worse. It really takes alot of mental strength to not feel complete disgust about those parts of your blood and remember those parents were just shitty people on their own. Please reconsider having mixed children for ‘glamorous’ & narcissist reasons if both parents won’t harmonize both cultures full of love. It’s a polarizing experience rarely discussed.

One thing she’s been consistent on is going to Six Flags Great Adventure every season with her kids. It may sound small but for what Mariah Carey went through, it’s a big way of shifting out of a toxic cycle and making sure it doesn’t continue to the next generation. I remember some of the stories MJ would tell about Mottola during the early 2000s and the ways he mistreated not only Carey but also him, Prince, and George Michael. Watching this has made me fall absolutely in love with Mariah. She has endured so much since birth and has remained so strong through it all. I felt my heart break so many times watching this, but I’m glad she’s happy through it all, at least from what I’ve seen on the interview with J Hud. Her gift is huge, and the weight of it wasn’t always easy to balance, but in the end faith really has defined her. This reminds me of Angela Bassett in her speech when she said, “As a young actress trying to make my way, survival figured into the equation, but not so much that I was willing to ever compromise my integrity.” ❤❤❤

100% - Every interview I've ever seen her do with women that she doesn't approve of (for whatever reason - the through thread that I've seen is she dislikes self made and traumatized women, but I've not watched all her stuff) she's passive-aggressive, blames the woman for any trauma -no matter how young- and passes off her nastier questions as, "well, the people want to know," "everyone is wondering," or (the worst I saw) "my assistant asked me to ask you." She's a real piece of work, that one.

I knew about her upbringing, but not the details about her violent brother. Her sister was horrible! Her mother and her jealousy wasn't much better. Now I understand the change of look when she divorced Mottola. She was never allowed to be young and live accordingly. It's a miracle that she is where she is. She could've been a statistic.

Thank you for this video. I've been a lamb since i was 7 years old when i first heard emotions back in 1995. She's such a sweetheart, and she's been through so much. She really loves her fans, us lambs. She's always saying how eternally grateful she is for us fans. I love her, and im so proud of her for making her life into an extraordinary one, despite her childhood and family. Mariah has so much class, she's so elegant, so sweet, so kind, and so beautiful. A lot of people, including celebs, have been extremely jealous of Mariahs beauty and success, and if you have a bunch of people jealous of you, then you are doing it right, babe. I hope she keeps winning at life, and she will. I mean, every Christmas, her song hits number 1, and it's been that way since "all i want for Christmas is you" has been out. Come December of 2023, it will be number 1 again, with no surprise to anyone 😂. Much love and respect to Mariah and her wonderful children. 💜💋🤝✌️

I understand that divide between siblings, especially when there's an age gap. My mom was great and it's never her fault, but being 18 yrs older than my sister with no one between us...yeah. how do you even begin to relate? I wasn't jealous, but I eas resentful because of opportunities that I let go of to remain close to home and help her. She still denies that she depended on me so much when my sister was born until she was about 5. I moved across country at that point just to get away from the responsibilities of a child that wasn't mine and honestly was bad AF, too lol. It allows me to finally spread my wings and fly! I loved it! I tried different careers, had the time to get to know myself outside of being an extention of my family (which was very big, and known in our small city. I hated it because of the expectations since I was one of them. I don't even mention their last name because it's always someone who knows them and then the questions start. I'm so glad I don't have the same last nameas my maternal family. ) I never treated my sister badly. But I definitely understand that age gap and being raised by different parents Although it was my mom for both of us, she was totally different with her than she was me, and that caused issues, too. Once again this is a wonderful video. I hope you're feeling better. My allergies have had me on my behind lately so I can sympathize. ❤❤❤
