Except from audiobook of Man and His Symbols, Chapter 7: The Process of Individuation, by Marie Louise Von Franz.
Man and His Symbols is the last work undertaken by Carl Jung before his death in 1961. First published in 1964, it is divided into five parts, four of which were written by associates of Jung: Marie-Louise von Franz, Joseph L. Henderson, Aniela Jaffé, and Jolande Jacobi. The book, which contains numerous illustrations, seeks to provide a clear explanation of Jung's complex theories for a wide non-specialist readership.

This is by far the most superior video of the anima i have ever found. The imagery of the dream is amazing. The different levels of the anima as well as the different cultural icons and the individuation process with shamanism sprinkled in ! Cant get much better than that ! Thank you.

Mind-bending isn't it? It makes so clear why things seem (to me) off the rails. "Only the unchanging is real", from Eastern Philosophy (Buddhism was the introduction for me), urges the spiritual path, as while this is intellectually stimulating beyond belief, it seems that integration of these realities is much less expedient than observing and disidentification with all stories. No easy task, either, but I see and have experienced many traps with this "thinking." Silence, meditation, with good guidance seems a wiser path, though not more alluring to this ego. Ego building from Western Philosophy; Ego as an obscuring fabrication from Eastern Philosophy. 🤔 OSHO, said of Jung, that he came to India and saw the sights and met with academics, but when invited to meet a "man of truth", he balked and wrote of the dangers of Easterm Paths for Westerners. True/untrue, I cannot know. Danger in mixing paths unwisely; yes, can attest to its capability to be very disorienting.

When it is said "sounds crazy," what has one said? Projection, and enactments of them in the outer life, are distorted versions of deep instincts. Untangling them is rough work that almost no-one will complete, although many of us start it. The process unveils the inner world of a man's response to trauma--your mother falling short or even damaging a boy. That the psyche's own language of symbols and ancient power dynamics is distasteful to the ego's perspective is to be expected as a surface reaction, but the journey must be made nevertheless if a man would truly be whole. For goodness sake the folk tales involve luring and drowing men who are bewitched by a voice across the river promising impossible comfort and reward. I'm pretty sure that any man honest with himself knows how unconscious and crazy this plight is, but it takes additional courage and integrity to see that it applies in one's own case, not just for men who "look worse off." Just sayin'.

It could be more complicated than that. Simply being gay may not mean a true connection to the feminine in this case. A better way to think of it would be connection to spirituality, creativity, intuition. Yet again perhaps you might find that you have an Animus instead? That you might find wealth from balancing out masculine aspects you've avoided or repressed? Who can say? Not me.

The reason the concept of Anima is hard to grasp is because it's an obscurantist grab-bag of psychological bric a brac. Sexual and romantic desires, interpersonal relating, synthesis of ideas and images, deliverer of messages from the unconscious, and feeling-toned memories of childhood caregivers - it's hard to see how these have anything to do with each other. (Probably because they don't.)
@individuationportal
@individuationportal 3 жыл бұрын
I think that Jungian psychology is not for everyone. For me, the concept of the anima tied a lot of things together and helped me relate by giving a name to my inner feminine. So, for me, the anima is a reality. But like everything else - the explanation must "click" for you.

Too much of anything stinks. Seek the middle way. The healthy self craves unity, harmony. I think this Manichaean idea of women as warm nesting emotion and man as rational action is unfortunate. In fact, we need women who can think and act and men who can feel and console. Otherwise, we end up with what we have , a bifurcated population toxic femininity on one side and toxic masculinity on the other mediated by a confusion of gender spectra. It’s not helpful! “ When you believe in things that you don’t understand you suffer; superstition ain’t the way.”

What is the empirical evidence for the existence of an anima or animus? And has anyone else noticed that in defining the anima, Jung clings to outdated, culture-based stereotypes concerning gender? What does it REALLY mean to be male or female apart from these? I'm not convinced this is a real thing.
@joshwhite4548
@joshwhite4548 4 жыл бұрын
Don't you mean - "What is the Rational evidence for the existence of an Anima or Animus?". You question like there should be evidence for this, built upon 'pure' scientific evidence. The problem is, Psychology still is, very much I would say, a touchy subject. Nothing is real in Psychology as it's impossible to prove things. Most of Jung's work is just over 100 years old. Also Jung's concept of breaking down behavioural patterns and their relationships to the subjective, formed the Archetypes aka, Anima & Animus. I believe the best way to break down, where Jung's thinking comes from, is to read ancient writings; this is the Hermetic Law of Duality/Polarity essentially, right? Without getting to involved & debatable. But this gives you a good overview of what everything is, from a sense of mysticism. If you think logically about the situation - the human mind evolved primitively from having hunters & gatherers; the women who were the birth givers and gave the men meaning. The psyche has evolved like any other organ - so with that, the subjective meaning and objective meaning to certain things are deeply ingrained. History has built us to this point. Jung was an empiricist (as you mentioned), which is why person experience is probably the best way to understand his work because it's something that isn't proven. To truly appreciate Jung, I really recommend you read his work (start with Man And His symbols) apply things in your own life and delve into artistic endeavours to digest them. There you have it - Jung merely observed what is and how it is. Moon & Sun Irrational & Rational Unconscious & Conscious. Feminine & Masculine Hope this helps, I would honestly say invest your time into work. Of course it's good to be sceptical, but I thought I'd give a bias'd answer to the latter :)
