The M90 pattern is actually in use in Finland as well - on vehicles and even some navy ships. It does really work from a distance and breaks the shapes of vehicles quite well. We're in the same region so our lascapes are pretty similar, and I guess the FDF just went "oh well, let's just use what's already out there and works". That's not to be said about the m05/m04 used on current uniforms and gear though. There was a huge research project behind those patterns, and they really are super effective. AFAIK Finland is planning to use the same patterns on the new uniforms that are being developed together with the other Nordic countries.

Wanting a camo that looks "distinctly Swedish" is quite smart, that way they can easily spot any non-Swedish soldiers trying to get close to bases etc. Most nations are more likely to field things that look like they are modern, there is a reason why most arms manufacturers have designers. You have to convince not only the procurement agency but the generals, the troops, the politicians, and the public. Just look at Switzerland, they wanted to buy planes and decided on the JAS 39 Gripen, but the public and the politicians didn't agree with the military on their needs and the deal was canceled only for the F35 to be chosen despite not winning the last time.

3:51 In 1915, the French Army became the first to create a dedicated camouflage unit. The word 'camouflage' came from the French verb meaning 'to make up for the stage'. Camouflage was invented by two French painters mobilised in the 6th Artillery Regiment: Lucien Victor Guirand de Scévola (1871-1950) and Louis Guingot (1864-1948).

That clip at 13:34 is from a video I shot when the army conducted an exercise to check the viability of moving troops using public transport; they embarked a platoon in the northern areas of central Stockholm, travelled to Slussen on the southern island, followed by a field march to set up a position at Fåfängan, a hilltop cafe built on the foundations of an old fort.

Sweden in WW2 is just a big story of us playing every side to stay safe. We allowed the Germans to use our railroads. We provided Intel to the Allies. We allowed allied pilots a safe haven after bombruns. We sent volunteers to Finland to fight the Russians. We allowed resistancefighters from Denmark and Norway to rest, train and resupply in Sweden. We even had plans to invade and liberate Denmark and Norway. We almost joined Germany in the war when the UK threatened to sink a squadron of swedish frigates docked by the Faroe Islands (the swedish commander decided to surrender which prevented shots being fired which kept us out of the war but his career was over since he abandoned his ships without a fight, which resulted in a direct order that no swedish vessel may ever surrender without a fight). And loads more stuff obviously. Famously we decoded Germanys most advanced cryptography machine, the G Machine, way more advanced than the simple (by comparison) Enigma Machine.

If the ships were surrendered it was only temporarily because they did enter service again shortly thereafter. Sweden bought four used destroyers from Italy in 1940, right before Italy joined the Germans in the war. While Sweden fetched the ships in Italy, Denmark and Norway were occupied by Germany. A few weeks later France was invaded. Churchill was worried that the the destroyers would eventually end up in German hands. He sent a destroyer squadron to intercept the Swedes and there was a standoff in the Faroe Islands. No shots were fired and the ships were eventually allowed to continue their journey to Sweden.
@SteveDahlskog
@SteveDahlskog 2 жыл бұрын
The ships were destroyers, not frigates (see sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilanderaffären) and having Sweden join Germany over the destroyers seems a bit overrated. Given that Germany invaded Denmark and Norway and in 1943 von Schell had made plans to invade Sweden, indicates that Sweden joining with Germany was out of the question, by 1943 at least.

Quick update: The M/90 pattern will remain on the new NCU uniforms mentioned late in the video, albeit scaled down to 60% of its original size and also adding the Swedish national emblem , the three crowns, here and there. This time they have copyrighted it. Delivery of the new uniforms to Sweden will commence in late 2023 and the contract was won by the Norwegian designer Oskar Pedersen AS. Greek company Siamidis manufactures the uniforms, multinational W.L Gore & Associates GmbH makes the fabric, Norwegian Aclima and Swedish Woolpower will make the new underwear. Gore-Tex is used in some garments.

Just a short notice.: the 1970's "baracuda" pattern (the circular ones) were mainly tested out in swedish leaf-tree forests - like the birch forests of southern sweden. There - the camouflage was deemed very effective. However - in the northern parts of sweden, where the forests are more made up with spruce and pine - one found the old pattern 59 (the entirely green uniform) more "up to the task". When the model 90 splinter camouflage was adopted in the (late) 80's we got a pattern designed for swedish terrain, but also for ALL swedish terrain. The thought was that in southern part of sweden - the pattern was slightly brighter (and with "splinters" of brown, for example) whereas in the nothern parts of sweden a slightly darker variant (with darker greens and black) were used in the beginning. Sorry for my bad English, though. I'm swedish (and from one of the first generation of conscripts issued the then "brand new" model 90). :-)

This was really interesting. The Swedes have always done some very interesting defence work despite their policy of neutrality. The jet fighter you saw with the double-delta shaped wings was the Saab Draken, a very cool jet I remember as a kid building model planes in the 70s! My dad worked in aerospace for a company making flight deck instruments and avionics, and I remember he had contacts with Saab. He said they were always very advanced and kept well ahead of the Soviets with their technology. WW2 camo on uniforms? Apart from the US Marines in the Pacific, we Brits had the Denison smock for UK Airborne forces and SAS in Europe - it had a three-colour disruptive pattern of light and dark green over brown. The standard battledress uniform in Khaki brown was worn underneath. The Germans used a number of different patterns, particlarly dot pattern, on Waffen-SS, but I've seen some evidence that some army units had access to some of these as well. The Germans had major problems with supplies of dye throughout the war, so even the standard uniforms changed colour from grey, to grey-green, to a sort of brown colour, as the various dyes ran out. Great video and reaction. Thanks Theo.

@@vberl9573 - the Draken is a double delta wing, the Viggen as you correctly say is a delta and canard design, so I was quite clear to use the term "double-delta" for the Draken. As a double check, I Googled "Saab Draken wing shape" and this was the first hit: "double delta wing The Saab 35 Draken is a fighter aircraft, equipped with a distinctive double delta wing. According to Flight International, it is difficult to differentiate between the fuselage and the wing. The design anticipates what would later be known as a 'blended wing-body'." 'Flight International' (published in the UK) was one of the periodicals that my father used to bring home to read from work. The others were 'Aviation Week & Space Technology' (USA) and 'Interavia' (Swiss).

From what I heard, the name "lövhögen"/leaf pile doesn't come from the looks but the sound. A squad of soldiers marching in early production m/90's would rattle like a pile of dry leaves in the autumn. And it's not that the uniform wasn't distributed as soon as it was finalized. Sweden quite simply had a huge army at the time (10+% of the total population, virtually all men of reasonable health) and they couldn't make enough uniforms for everyone. So from what I've read, the m/90 was first distributed to rangers and then more and more soldiers got access to them. And even then, prior to 2000-ish, recruits would start their training using m/59's and only when they'd finish basic training were they "worthy" of the m/90.

according to Swedish military history the reason for The Policy of 1812 implemented by the then heir-presumptive to the King , since after being in constant war for almost 200 years outside of the country where the majority of adult males had been to war and the country needed to find a way to heal its wounds and rebuild the defence and armed forces after the major loss of Finland to Russia, the most effective way of doing this was to "officially" take the stance of total neutrality(even if we helped the British during Napoleonic Wars the year after against napoleon since the heir-presumptive did not like how napoleon did things after having served under him for 20years in the French army as a officer)
@davemac1197

Fun facts: 1. We still have income tax in the UK, despite it being introduced as an 'emergency measure' to raise money for the war against Napoleon 200 years ago. 2. We still get asked why we drive on the left, despite never being occupied by Napoleon and forced over to the over side of the road by his troops. 3. We named the London railway station nearest the continent after Waterloo - the French hate that. They hate it even more after the Channel Tunnel was built and the London terminus for the high speed rail line from Paris was inevitably... Waterloo station.

I actually participated in the study of the M90 pattern, we were riding a truckbed along a road, fireing att all "enemys" we could see on the route, we missed abbout 80% of the M90's and 10 of the solid green ones. The Nature in Sweden is much different to the US (yes even the northern parts) with a lot deeper, darker greens, even the camouflage with the round shapes work well since we have lots of trees with round(ish) leafs. With that said, there is always room for improvements, and the new pattern looks promising.

my opinion is that the m90 varied alot across its variants (iam a collector and camouflage enthisiast). Effectiveness varied alot with it, the pattern worked very well with the darker northern colours, however they went overboard with the bosnian war variant (grassland) desert variant and the southern forest pattern. The pattern just works best with darker colours, same goes for the finnish m62 variants. Another aspect to swedens design was political, they wanted something "non agressive" similar reason the netherlands didnt use flecktarn partially because its based on SS camo patterns.

In ww2 we gave support to both sides to some extent. The ruling party (social democrats) being the sister party of the nazi party highly favored them while the population distinctly aligning themselves with the allies (the exception being Soviet in the winter war). So the government for example assisted in troop transports for Germany, while also selling a lot of weapons to both sides.

I think the waffen SS (they were sort of the army of the Nazi party, not the same as the the Wehrmach, the army of the german state), were among the first adopters of "scientifically" developed camouflage. Not that I want to praise them or anything, but since you asked the question... A forerunner to modern camo patterns is the so called "dazzle camouflage" that was used on warships by all sides in world war one. These were strange, broken geometrical patterns in black and white, that was supposed to make the ships harder to target. Back then, before radar and computers, targeting was made by optically measuring the distance to the target ship, then adjusting manually for the heading and speed of the target. When shooting at a moving target miles away, you need to have the calculation dead on if you hope to make a hit. The dazzle camouflage made it really difficult to estimate the size of the enemy ship, and in what direction the ship was pointing, thereby taking one or two of the important parameters out of the equation. Contrary to what everyone expected, it turned out that the striking, zebra-patterned ships also became much harder to see than a ship that's painted in plain gray.

I believe the reason for not taking sides in WW2 at the beginning was due to a great disarmament of the armed forces after the First World War as we(the Swedes) hoped end believed there would never be any war again like the WW1. So therefore we wouldn't stand a chance to Germany if denying them to transit their troops to Northern Norway

Worst camouflage ever invented :P I'm so old so I was in the Service when the M58 and M90 uniforms were both in service. And so I can say from personal experience that those wearing the M90 splinter was spotted long before those wearing the old M58 solid drab olive green. I was in the marines and driving past island in our boats we could always spot soldiers that had been issued the new M90 trying to hide on the islands in the archipelago. We always pointed and waved at them and then on the radio we always got back "stop revealing our location" and we always responded that they revealed themselves by having a shitty camouflage pattern. And sometimes we got in the radio a call from someone wearing the old M58 uniform butting and saying "You missed us though". No matter what any historian say the Swedish M90 was put in service just because it looked cool. The solid drab olive green is still the superior camouflage pattern to wear in green woodland areas. The solid color makes it's own camouflage pattern when the shadows from the sun hits it. It's not a mistake that jungle fighters and other such units still wear the solid drab olive green. But Sweden wanted to stand out so they made a camouflage pattern that stands out and that is not a preferable characteristic on a uniform. And now I'm bracing for the tacti-cools that are going to tell me wrong I'm because they also like to look cool :P

The Policy of 1812 had a lot to do with the new crown prince and future king, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, we imported from France since the king was old and without children(legitimate once). He was one of Napoleon's marshals and thought the most important thing for a country was to have peace. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XIV_John

We're kinda lucky in Denmark in one sense, not so much in others.. We're under 6m people - so the forces are small and gear forms a larger part of the equation. We're proud of our Frømandskorps - a la Nøkk from Rainbox Six for the gamers, they're our sweaty chad-types.. Thinking about it, with the lack of conflicts that they were involved in, it really was more fashion than function for the Swedes for the most part. Swedish camo was once the best reason for trying their line in WoTanks..

Why do you think they wanted to use up remaining uniform stocks? Because unlike the US millitary, most others do not have unlimited budgets. As a comparison the US military budget alone is almost twice as large as Swedens combined and total GDP...

In WWII Sweden gave aid to Finland, mainly because Finland and Sweden was the same country for centuries so we share a cultural thingie, but also because we didn´t want Stalin on our doorstep!! We alredy had Hitler on our south and eastern borders! Enough is enough! Sweden gave arms to Finland (Guns, munitions both for small arms and artillery, a whole third of of our airforce (Pilots included), logistics such as first aid kits, underwear, gloves and so on), opened up the newly developed social welfare system to take care of our eastern brethrens childs displaced by russian (Soviet) aggression, and gave swedish conscripts, that were by law mandated to serve in the swedish military "Leave to visit Finland" (Around 9000 did during the war) Many finns might not want to regognzie this because it´s too much to make fun of Sweden, but the facts are still there! Swedes do love Finland!

The mindset that made Sweden decide to stay out of war comes from Swedish history with Denmark. Sweden and Denmark are the two countries in the world with the most wars between them. 11 total, for reference the total amount of wars that the US has fought in is 12. Around the 1800s we got tired of fighting the Danes.

The first troops to wear camouflage uniforms were the German SS. They were not handicapped by tradition as normal armies but could develop the most effective uniforms in a more scientific way.

Regarding the reason for neutrality is like deadline93 wrote. Sweden have been in and out of major conflicts and war since the beginning of the Viking era up until it was decided that enough is enough and we took a step to the side and became "neutral". To add to that, basically...being involved in major conflict cost a lot of money, money that will be better spent on the people and infrastructure rather than for upkeep of armed forces in conflicts that does not involve us. Sweden is a small country with relatively low population so it is not possible for us to sustain any larger conflict for a longer period of time. So, it is more resource efficient to stay neutral and instead acting as mediator and to provide aid to those in need (it is far more complicated than that, but it is the basics). Sweden being neutral is often very misunderstood and people just think "neutral" as in doing nothing. To really understand how the "neutrality" part works you need to look more in detail for specific conflicts because it is decided on case by case what the actions will be. For example the Finnish winter war, Sweden could not officially send troops because this is by default picking a side and you are then no longer neutral...BUT...the Swedish government allowed soldiers to volunteer to go and support Finland, thus staying neutral and still give support since we knew that if Finland falls to Russia then Sweden is next in line for potential invasion. Sweden do however need to have its own armed forces to have the possibility to defend itself to be able to keep its neutrality status. This extends to the point that the orders are that if Sweden is attacked, the Swedish government will never give orders to surrender and that we are to fight until last man/woman standing.

Sweden had two choises in WW2, starve and freese or maybee get invaded or cooperate with the germans. Sweden needed food and coal, to heat the houses that was not made in sweden and germany got it, the choise where easy, but sweden gave lot of intellegence to the allies and in -45 even hlet the allies have air bases for the opaeration save Denmark, that operation did however never hapend

The FOI cum up to the conclusions that everything smaller than one square meter should just be green. How to paint bigger things was really regulated, all tanks should have the same camo, cars depanding on brand had same camo, really scientifically based camo.

The notion of "inspired by the US" should refer mostly to the cut of the garments, not the print. That YT channel is more about uniform systems than it's about camouflage patterns.

To make a really long subject on swedish international policy short 2 major events helped guide the creation of neutrality. Firstly the defeat in the Great Northern War which saw sweden demoted to a secondary power in European politics. Second was the Finish war of 1808 during wich sweden lost its eastern half or Finnland to Russia. This event happend as a part of the Napoleonic Wars and led to radical political change in sweden towards a constiutional monarchy. Now European politics before 1800 dident allow for neutrality really all nations was allways under threat of invassion and alliances where absolutley nececary. However afterwards things stablized in the conzert of europe. During this time Sweden and Switzerland set the trend of smaller European states to declear neutrality to avoid getting entagled in greater conflicts and this worked mostly up untill World War II. Sweden dident simply adoped it cause our new King demanded it, it was also supported by varius political groups within the nation and by the military that recogniced that sweden was no longer able to field comperable forces to the likes of Prussia Russia UK and France. Recognicing that any war sweden found itself in would end in a disastrous conflict simply repeating the Finish war of 1808.

That part about Sweden wanting a specifically Swedish pattern isn't that dumb, really. Look at the war in Ukraine. The Russian uniforms and the Ukrainian uniforms are so similar, that the soldiers add tape to their uniforms to avoid friendly fire. White tape for Russians, and yellow or blue tape for Ukrainians. I guess Sweden wanted a good camouflage pattern, but one that avoided friendly fire.

It is truly only the American is that completes that waterway with nuclear submarines. Canada is disgustingly secretive so there's no reason to believe we don't have all kinds of drones and unmanned underwater vehicles up there but the reality is I don't believe we have any ability to defend our sovereignty.
