As a Finn, again, I must say that we up here do have a bit different way to look at EU politics and Russia, than our EU friends in central or southern Europe. There is a reason why Finland has one of the strongest armies in EU. There is a reason why Sweden is really putting up their strenght. And why Norway is is in NATO. And why we all train together all the time and have mutual agreements on defence.

Generally speaking, what this region is essentially preparing for is a possible proxy conflict for economical control over resources and transportation. China has stated that a shipping lane through the arctic would be faster, cheaper and more direct to Europe that through the Malaca straight and the Indian Ocean. The amount of oil and gas will turn this area in to a northern version of the middle east. So control of this area will make surrounding countries susceptible to power play by big players. This in turn can initiate proxy conflicts and tug of war. And we can see today that the big boys are already rubbing their hands together and just waiting to make a move.

Because of these claims it’s now a so called“grey area”. Nonsense. Denmark Norway Sweden and Finland have a legit claims. No other country can claim. And yes USA, it’s not for sale ,people are living in these places. The Nordic counties are investing a lot ,to have people there to make it profitable for the future generations. This conflict will change the relationship between the USA and Europe as well.

Thing is, the defence of Sweden is centered around "Totalförsvaret" (The Total Defence). The military is a part of it but it's not all of it. "Totalförsvaret" is centered around the idea to defend Sweden against everything, not just military agression from a foreign power or domestic threats (like in the US), it's "everything" in the literal sense both present and future.
@tf5
@tf5 2 жыл бұрын
If war is to occur in Sweden, then it is up to the total defence to protect all functions of society, but the main point is that it is not only the army, navy and airforce that protect, but also the civilians. Civilians will get important jobs, such as, but not limited to, transportation of supplies, security, healthcare, energy etc.
@johanmetreus1268
@johanmetreus1268 2 жыл бұрын
""Totalförsvaret" is centered around the idea to defend Sweden against everything," Incorrect. It is centred around the fact that a total war will involve the society as a whole, and thus all aspects of society will have to contribute to the national defence. Totalförsvaret consists of the military defence forces (Försvarsmakten) for obvious reasons, but that is useless if the civilian society can not uphold the basic necessities: shelter, food, water, healthcare, waste disposal, schools, rescue- and firefighting services and war time production. This has to function even if attacked directly (bombings, sabotage and what not) and that is what Civilförsvaret (civil defence) is all about. Final component is the psychological defence, tasked with upholding morale and counteract enemy propaganda in military and civilians alike.

From what I've read, the Greenland/Iceland thing was originally coined by vikings to disorient potential invaders. Seeing a massive continent of almost pure ice on the horizon would make them think it was Iceland and invade, wasting resources and energy before realizing their mistake, or if they saw green land on the horizon they'd think they'd fallen ofcourse as they were looking for Iceland, not Greenland

A lot of people seem to underestimate the power a nation will get by controlling the arctic. The nation that controls an ice-free arctic will have: 1. Full control over the worlds most profitable shipping lanes 2. Full control over the worlds most profitable fishing waters 3. Full control over the worlds most profitable mineral recourses 4. Full control over the worlds most profitable oil and gas recourses 5. Unprecedented ability to exert power over North America and Europe This is an area worth starting WW3 over. We must be prepared.

I’m from Sweden and have always had an interest in the military. I served in the early 90s. The host in this serie, Melker Becker is very well known in Sweden. He have done a lot of short films about the Swedish military during the cold war. We had a huge defence for being such a small country in those days. I think Melker is very sharp, accurate and source-critical and all of his short movies are really really good. Unfortunatly I think this is the first and only one that is subtitled in English so far. But i am not a 100% shure about that.

This reminds me a lot about a book I read that talks about something similar, can't remember the name of it but it was essentially the same thing with the north pole melting and allegations that the Russian sub that sank in the 90's was apparently hit by a US sub by accident (crash, not torpedo) and that was supposed to be the reason why Russia refused help from a lot of the countries that were offering to help out like the UK and Norway. I know that they eventually accepted help from the Netherlands, but that was way too late to save anyone on board unfortunately. I remember when Russia put that flag down there, was pretty big news at the time cause Russia had just put a claim on the complete top of the planet which if they are serious about, will mean that they "own" all the new shipping lanes that open up and all the fish in the area plus any oil which is at the bottom of the sea. With the US trying to buy Greenland, it seems that both countries want to stake a claim on the area. All the videos that ForcesTV have been putting out with all the new ships, subs and fighter jets now start to make sense with the videos of troops training for urban combat at the same time. Seems like the start of a new cold war is upon us. Makes even more sense on why Russia has been getting so friendly with China and also why Russia fought so hard to keep Assad in power so they would have access to even more oil than they have already. Seems all our government's know something that we don't...

What many forget about the arctic is the veiw of the geography if you put the nort pole in the center. We are so used to look at a 2D map that one forget that over the pole it open up totally different routes. It is no longer just a "east-west" axis in the norther hemisphere, it is north-south as well. In an attack towards the US over the pole Finland would not be any kind of shield because it would not even be close. Canada on the other hand... Like I said, it is a different menta picture.

I kept going to make guitar chord shapes whenever I've had a shot of a Uke which is/was frustrating as hell. Really difficult instrument to master. And I laughed the first time I saw one, i genuinely thought it was a joke guitar but I know now that it obviously isn't and is a great sounding instrument that instantly sound familiar when you hear someone playing it correctly. It would be interesting to know the context of this video. Did the Swedish government produce this to highlight the importance of their armed forces in a broader context of the geopolitical situation worldwide? If so, great idea! I think the general public are pretty naïve to the uses of the military outside of straight up war. Using the navy to keep sea lanes open, the army for disaster relief etc

The US Air Force has a base in Greenland (AFB Thule). As for why the flag was titanium, it had to be to survive the immense pressures at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. Russia is basically staking half the Arctic as their sovereign territory because they claim theirs an extended continental shelf stretching out from the northern coastline of Russia.

This series is great and very informative and none the less something a lot of people do not see or understand. War is so much more then bullets and helmets, I vote for you to do this series even though I've seen it but I love to get your take on it. The Americans kept the Thule air base on Greenland and the strategic position of Greenland is very important, Russian presence in the Arctic is already established in 1947 West of Svalbard a base called Nagurskoye. In 2017 Russia have finished upgrading/ modernizing this base and gets a visit by Putin. This base is for sure prepared for staking Arctic when it becomes available. So for countries in the area of the Arctic like Sweden it will have a huge impact when this gets into a more physical conflict because the gray area has been entered a long time ago.

It makes sense to talk about really important things that other countries don’t so much talk about. Sweden has a poor defense force, so it is good that Sweden is focusing on those things where Sweden has more influence.

USA, Sweden, Norway and Finland have trained together up in the northern Nordic countries. Already now it is being trained whether Russia would attack in the Arctic or the northern Nordic countries.

This series shows what is going to be the the problems and instigators to potential conflicts. Changed weather patterns will shift the distribution of arable land. Our civilizations are built around arable areas with good access to fresh water. If suddenly you can't get the the same amount of food grown or water supplies dries up, conflict will be near. People will be forced to flee and put further strain on neighbouring countries that might struggle with the same problems. It is easy to see how this quickly can spill over into a large conflict.
