Dog reminds me of an incident at least 68 years ago. We had a beloved, gentle spaniel. I assumed all dogs were like her. They're not. So I was on my way to school (everyone walked to school then) and saw a couple of beautiful black dobermans in someone's yard. I ran over and called to them, and reached over the fence. One of the doggos walked over and calmly took my hand in his teeth, biting gently and letting go, continuing to watch me. I was shocked and scared, but it was my first explicit lesson in boundaries. Since then, I realized these were wonderful, gentle dogs, who recognized I was only a pup, and gave me an appropriate reminder of acceptable behavior. The gesture frightened me, but the dogs' silent watchfulness scared me more.

I went to family counciling with my mother. I recall her saying after one session, " You did not make me look very good in there. " One of the most toxic elements of toxic families is the pressure to keep the toxic situation under wraps. My mother also felt my grandparents, aunts, and uncles on her side of the family were "Her Family ." My brother and I were given no support in mourning their passing. I guess we were to ignore the increasing hole in our lives their deaths meant. Like many things, emotions were reserved for our parents. Our role was to serve, endure, and jump on command. My parents were at war for about thirty years. I cared for my mother after the divorce. My memory is blanked of much of it, like some of the posters here.

Several years ago my parents (illegally, and knowing it was illegal) forced me to sign away my rights to medical privacy (I'm 35 with disabilities that keep me from living on my own), which included whatever notes my primary care doctor received from my freaking psychiatrist... there's a giant secret that I have been keeping about one of my parents since I was 12, and they have no idea that I know about it, the other parent is clueless, but my psychiatrist sure knew about it; it was a huge factor in who I grew up to be, and a source of great distress and anxiety over the course of my lifetime. If they decided to access my records, there was a chance the other parent would find out the secret, which would probably destroy a 45 year long marriage. They were also given the right to speak to my doctors about me.... without my presence. I've never felt so helpless and degraded in my life. They threatened to leave me homeless if I didn't sign it. I managed to sneak an expiration date onto the form before handing it in, so they only had these rights for one month, but it was the most frightening month of my life. They desperately wanted control in every way, and it made me push back harder than I ever have before.... they've never heard the word "no" from me before then. Four weeks later I told my doctor everything, then went home and told them the contract had expired, and that I was moving out. I would rather live in my car than have my family torn to shreds by my psych notes, and I needed the help badly, so I sacrificed everything to have simple privacy that people take for granted. It saddens me to hear how many people deal with this kind of covert emotional abuse. 😞

Fully relate to this. I’ve long cut contact with my biological family, who through the years gifted me permanent nerve damage, cPTSD & PTSD, they refuse to acknowledge or accept any responsibility for their behaviour. My mother didn’t want to be responsible so I, as a child, was forced to bring up my brother, and care for my mother who constantly told me I was the reason her life sucked, she had depression, wanted to kill herself etc etc, she’d go off with random men, and picked my brother as the golden child, so whilst she psychologically abused me, she enabled his psychological abuse and turned a blind eye to his physically violent abuse. As an adult even after moving out the abuse just changed, bullying, harassment, guilt tripping, gaslighting, homophobia, weaponising my disabilities, screaming right in my face, stealing from me etc, so even when I’d moved into my own home I wasn’t safe from their grasp. One week my mother came to my house uninvited and I was too scared to tell her to leave, and in that week she tried to sabotage me getting my pain meds prescription that I NEED because of my permanent nerve damage (I’m about 90% bedridden, when I can move around I use a walking cane), she said she would get my meds because I was physically unable to move around and in too much pain and my PTSD had been constantly set off and on edge since she decided to grace me with her presence, as a way of thanking me for “letting” her stay over… except she didn’t. She was meeting friends at a coffee shop a 2 minute walk from my pharmacy, yet somehow all day was unreachable, so I managed to get the bus into town (the 5 minute walk took me 20, my body just wasn’t coping, nerve damage and chronic pain just plain suck), had a small breakdown on the bus where a young girl sat next to me, told me about her day and said “my uncle has PTSD and reacts this way sometimes, he fought in Iraq, where did you fight?” assuming I was a veteran soldier (I lived in Moray, Scotland, it has a few military bases very close to Elgin, the small city), and I smiled and replied “ah, different sort of war I fought in, thank you for being kind”, so she just kept talking to me and I’m honestly extremely grateful that she helped ground me that day, because after several days of my PTSD being constantly triggered and on edge, it just kicked off on the bus with no warning. I walked to my pharmacy (normally 2 minutes from bus station, took me about 15) and got my prescription at 1630 hours, the pharmacy closes at 1700. This is Elgin in Moray, a small city in the NE of Scotland, so pharmacy’s don’t stay open late, most things close at 1700. I had specifically told my mother they close at 1700 and I wouldn’t have enough meds to last me because I was due a refill, yet didn’t do the one thing she’d promised to do, the only thing asked when she stayed at mine without warning, I wasn’t asking a lot and never asked her for anything in general because I know she’s selfish, but figured because she’s employed as a pharmacist assistant and knows what the meds are and the strength, she’d understand how vitally important they are for me. I had tried calling and texting my mother the entire time, I hadn’t heard from her all day and checked in at 1500 hours and got no response from calls or texts, so I phoned the pharmacy to see if my prescription had been picked up and it hadn’t, so I kept my mother updated telling her when I was getting on the bus, when I was at the pharmacy, when I was getting the bus home, and she didn’t call me until 1800, angrily phoning me asking why the doctors surgery didn’t have my prescription, so I asked her “Have you read any of your texts? I picked up the prescription at 1630 because the pharmacy closed at 1700, which you knew, and you also knew that I NEEDED this prescription or else I’d be completely out of meds” So she naturally started screaming at me (because of course she did), that I’d lied, wasted her time blah blah blah, so I told her “when you feel like being a responsible and calm adult come talk to me, I’m otherwise ending the call” and I hung up still hearing unintelligible screeching. Once she got to my house I just waited until she stopped screaming, just didn’t react at all as if she were a child throwing a tantrum, because that’s how she often acts, and then calmly explained I had explicitly told her the pharmacy closed at 1700, and she KNEW my prescription was at the pharmacy, not the doctors surgery, and that she’d asked me to text her the pharmacy name and address that morning and had commented “oh that’s near my coffee shop, I know where that is”. She tried butting in but I put my hand up to silence her, and continued to calmly explain that she not only promised to pick up the prescription, but she had sabotaged my meds entirely, she knew what time the pharmacy closed and intentionally ignored all my calls and texts, texts of me telling her I was on the bus there, that I picked up my prescription, and that I was on the bus back and unimpressed. She tried giving me rubbish about “being too busy to check her phone” but I pointed out that was a lie, her phone was practically attached to her hand as she was always texting and using Facebook all day. So she started screeching unintelligible nonsense and I told her to leave, that I wouldn’t be spoken in such a way in my own home, and that she wasn’t welcome, so she started slamming doors, throwing things around and I shouted “STOP”, and threatened to call the police “You’d call the police on your own mother?!” “Yes, and you know that, you know fine well your behaviour has not been kind to me since early childhood and we have a strained relationship because of how you behave, are toxic and enable your toxics sons behaviour towards me, so yes I will 100% call police Scotland if you do not leave my property immediately” “How could you treat your own family that way, we’re familyyyyyyyy” “I got diagnosed with cPTSD & PTSD around 24/25 and you know the main reason for my PTSD diagnosis is your lifelong abuse and my brothers lifelong abuse, you don’t treat family like that, now LEAVE MY HOUSE” She has never, ever accepted any fault or responsibility, instead she just sent threats and harassment. Once she was back at her home she texted saying “Got home later than usual as there was a car crash, bet you wished it was me that crashed” I cut all contact after that day, and her and my brother only ever tried contacting me to harass me and send abuse, to harass me through her friends, to have someone email me every single year on my birthday, a significant PTSD trigger date because my brother would abuse me because he didn’t get 100% attention for one singular day of the year and I get horrible flashbacks, and she gets a friend to email me saying how much she would love to wish me happy birthday, where I have to email her friends back saying WHY she’s cut out from my life entirely and that this isn’t a hallmark movie where the estranged family member gets back together with their family, this is real life and sadly, it’s ugly, yet it doesn’t stop her friends trying every year to harass and bully me into forgiving my abusive mother because “she’s familyyyyyyyyyy” Thing is she still doesn’t care about how I’ve had to live with that abuse, what it’s done to me, coping with PTSD and learning to survive with it through PTSD specific therapy, she instead is only concerned about how it makes her look, that it makes her look toxic and abusive, and doesn’t care about making amends or ever apologising, admitting fault or even acknowledging what was done over the years, she’s only interested in how it makes her look.

That last one sums up my childhood in my mom and her husband's house. I have an anxiety disorder (I still believe they way they treated me growing up contributed to that) and have a hoarding tendency because of that. As a kid my room was always messy, but when my mom and her husband (my stepfather but because he has only ever treated me like a daughter when it suited him, like when he wanted to assert dominance over me, I refuse to call him anything less than the man my mother is married to) found out why (my hoarding tendency) they just didn't carry to work with me on it. It was explained to them by a professional that I don't feel safe (in my own home, I may add) so the hoarding was to cope with that. Instead of helping me work on those feelings, talking g to me to find out WHY I didn't feel safe IN MY OWN HOME, looking into other therapist options for me when my other therapist service refused to help me (hated those ppl still), ANYTHING to help me, they basically said "screw your problems, my house my rules," and my mom would throw everything away when she had a chance, even asked he father to take me with him to visit his sister in New York state (from Pennsylvania) so she would have a long weekend to "clean" my room. And I could never find anything afterwards. That was her big thing, "how can you find anything in that pigsty of a room?" But if I asked her were something was after she cleaned, her answer was always "I don't know." My room was a mess, but it what a mess I made with the intent of better finding things. If I wanted my binder of Pokemon cards I hadn't seen in 3 three weeks, I knew it was right between the box of Bakugan and stack of filled notebooks, under my giant plush old English sheepdog. It pissed me off and I thought I got away from it when I moved out. NOPE! At first she would regularly come over, disregard my wish for her to LEAVE MY THINGS ALONE, and "clean" my apartment, causing me a lot of stress. She rarely asked where I wanted things and when she did she would say "but it would be better here" and put whatever it is where SHE wanted it even though I tell her "no it doesn't go here, it goes there." And she gets upset when I refuse to let her in my apartment. All she does is comment about how "messy" my apartment is. It's cluttered, because I have a lot of stuff and little shelf space, but very little is on the ground that you wouldn't expect to find there. I keep telling her she can't tell me what to do because it's MY apartment that I pay for with MY money from MY job, but she insists that she can because otherwise "your landlord will kick you out for being so messy." I explained that, by law, he can't do that unless it's causing problems for the entire building and other tenets, but this woman who, as far as I know, has never rented an apartment a day in her life thinks she knows everything about it. She even takes the spare key her father has when we're away to come in and "clean" without my knowing. My aunt says that me telling her to get out of my apartment or I'm calling the cops when I find out is "too mean, she's just trying to help." I've tried telling her, "how would you like it if I did that to you" and she just laughs and says "I would love for someone to clean my house for free." Just more reason for me to dump her in the worst possible nursing home I can find the day she becomes too old and frail to live at home. I will pay ANYTHING for that and idk how spiteful and mean it is. After the hell my childhood was and how she continues to treat me, it's worth it to show her just what I feel.

Sorry to hear the person who gave birth to you and was supposed to keep you safe decided it was her duty in life to make you suffer and disregard what you own and your feeling due to her being a toxic twat with OCD (over-compulsive disorder) which in her actions lead to your anxiety, and the fact she seems like the type of person who loves being in control and keeping those she sees beneath her as possessions don't help either. (Note: I should know because sadly I went thought the same thing and lost personal belongings because of that person and still have angry flashbacks because of it.) Aside from that, I hope you've considered doing the following after the COVID pandemic or ASAP if you can... - To keep her out of your apartment: Change your locks and let your landlord know she no longer welcomed in your apartment and not to give her access and consider her trespassing should she insist or Play the innocent worried mother act. (Note: Consider getting that restraining order) It's time she learned the phrase "Her house her rules" no longer applies and "It's Your house and your rules." and she no longer welcomed nor will you accept her uninvited visits, and maybe she'll know just a little of what you felt like but Narssticitic domineering types like her never do. -Cut contact with those who Gaslight and deflect to enable your mother's actions: Oh yes I'm referring to those who ignore the problem and tell you to deal with it like you Aunt who I think you may want to consider going no contact or low contact and if they ask why just mention "I'm just cutting toxic and enabling elements from my life and I guess you made the list." (Especially the Aunt who I know wouldn't like someone entering her home throwing her belongings away.) -Consider moving after COVID is over: If it's in your means consider finding a place far from her reach and would give her difficulty in travel to the point she wants you to come to see her and just say no same deal for the aunt. (Note: The reason why I'm focusing on the Aunt is that she probably knows what your mother is doing, has experienced it, and is following the same line of thinking her parents did when her belonging were destroyed to the tune of Markee's "Not my monkey not my circus" line of thinking knowing if she can't get to you she'll probably annoy her soon. With that said I hope you find the solace in knowing you're not alone and just as a warning keep in mind your mother also sounds like the type who thinks you're supposed to care for her in your home when she hits senior citizen/nursing home community age so start searching.

@@kmon1324 thanks for the advice! I am going to move after my lease is up in November because my stay with her ended when I got into a fight with her husband about how he treats my dog, who they agreed to care for but basically neglect him to the point that he's acting out just for any but of attention. This fight almost became physical and my mom still says that I "just need to shut up and do as I'm told." My grandma, my mom's mom who she hates (ironically because she abused her as a child), has offered to let me move in with her and to bring my dog, so my mom will most likely be staying FAR away. Grandma and I also plan to move to Arizona when this crisis ends, we live in Pennsylvania now, so that will put a lot of distance between me and her. It would also put distance between me and family and friends I want to have in my life, but I can still keep in contact with social media and texting, as well as the occasional visit, but I feel distancing myself from mom is the first big step to cutting down on the toxicity. My dog will probably also be happy to be able to enjoy his toys for once, since my mom's wiener dog didn't let him have anything and now her @$$hole puppy is doing the same. I haven't told my mom or any family about this yet (grandma and grandpa are divorced) so they can't try to talk me out of it. They won't know until it happens, until I'm getting my dog and his things from my mom's house. It will be an adjustment for him, but at the rate things are going, it's for the best. Mom's husband is a HUGE @$$hole, so I can see him getting rid of my dog sooner or later and she won't tell me until I go out to the house and ask why he isn't there. What you said about my mom having OCD is probably true. She jokes that she does, but she won't get herself diagnosed by a professional because GOD FORBID she have a mental health issue and not be normal. I think she knows she's got a lot of issues from how she was raised and is afraid of the diagnosis putting her in a position of less power somehow, so she avoids it. But this only hurts her relationship with me, though she'll never admit it. If something she says or does upsets me, it's my fault for being sensitive or not understanding her jokes. She doesn't understand why I was so upset when I found out she wanted me to be held back from graduation until I was 21, even though I was perfectly able to graduate at 18 with my class. Thankfully she didn't find out I "qualified" for being held back like that AFTER I graduated. Still upsets me though, that I worked so hard and she would have just said "no, this is what I want for you" and since it would have been for mental health reasons that I would have been held back, they probably would have taken her side over mine, given how mental health is treated around here. Like when I move in with my grandma, my family isn't going to know I'm moving to Arizona until it happens. If once i move, she actually puts in the effort to treat me better and sees a professional about her mental problems, I may consider keeping her in my life. But that's a BIG if for her. So, we'll have to see where that goes. Thanks again for you advice! I'm sorry you went through a Simi situation! Parents shouldn't be allowed to treat their children like crap for any reason.

The one person in the story that said sometime the entitled parents win about the child doing self-harm and forcing them to pay for their own therapy. It may have taken you years later but you said you got away from them and it was for the better, so they DIDN'T win. It's really jarring for me when the end of one story slowly transitions to another because your voice talks over itself. Just make sure the things you read for information are peer reviewed, because if what you read is not peer reviewed, it is basically worthless and cannot be trusted as truth/ fact. @@giselleyfish3612 Spoken like someone who believes smoking weed is "good for you" and not the consumption of a foreign substance that slows brain function and reflexes. A long time ago there were "studies" and doctors that said smoking tobacco was "good for you" that it "expanded lunch function". Be careful with "science" that is pushing an agenda or a current fad. But hey i don't actually think drugs like weed should be illegal. It does have some medicinal effects such as pain relief that work better than and is less addictive than some perscribed dugs. That a drug works to aid pain relief does not make it "good for you", it makes it a tool that can be helpful if used responsibly. But hey (again) you are an adult, and can make your own decisions about what forieng substance you ingest. Just DO NOT DRIVE and put other people in danger with your slowed reflexes and that altered brain function that makes you feel so good dude.

People who drive after smoking weed tend to be paranoid about speeding, so drive ten or more miles under the limit. By doing this, they become a hazard to other drivers.
@Silver_wind_1987_4 жыл бұрын
@@paden1865able depends on what you're smoking....people put weed in this little fucking box. It's alot more complicated...there's weed that has no THC in it...while some do. Some are stronger than others. It's all about WHAT YOU GET. Example: cheap weed can make you either throw up and it smells like skunk. While expensive weed can actaully sell very suttle...and ralther pleasant. Some weed has no smell at all...or takes ALOT to build a smell up. Weed in general can have different effects...its about not only as I keep saying What you buy but also the person and how they react to it.
@thedarkestkinghtstar4 жыл бұрын
@@giselleyfish3612 I feel like you've read the overview of the articles instead of the entire article. For example; is it comparing alcohol vs weed in regards to motor function/driving? Well, there are a lot more studies regarding alcohol than weed based on legality over the years. Until fairly recently as legality increases and yes, weed vs alcohol could mean weed is better than alcohol if you're going to make the unwise choice to drive impaired. It might be more accurate to compare it to medication while driving; you can get in trouble for driving under the influence of perfectly legal medications. It's like telling a women smoking a pack or more a day that it's healthier to continue smoking than stop. Which is "true". It can cause a lot more stress if she tries to completely stop smoking, which can cause a lot of development issues for baby. However, comparing a women who doesn't smoke vs a women who does; the women who doesn't smoke is more likely to have a healthy pregnancy; even with the claim it was healthy at one point to smoke (you could have smaller babies, not really worth the risk). I feel the same is here. It might be safer to smoke weed than drink alcohol and drive but driving without an impairment is better than driving with one.
