Switzerland has great cheese and I visited the Alps and a Alpine village with dozens of types of cheese. My Gal is from Iran and makes lots of exotic Persian foods with names that I don't understand. The variety of spices she uses makes Canadian food very boring. She made these huge meatballs with a boiled egg in the middle and some special sauce for their New Year, Nowruz in March this year, fantastic food. Because of the Jewish diaspora you have Jews from all over Europe and Africa and each group brings their unique dishes so you are a lucky guy to have so many dishes to choose from. Keep up the good work.

I went to Israel in 2019, and our guide turned us loose in Mahane Yehuda on Friday afternoon. The place was packed with people shopping for Shabbat, and I had so many questions about the foods but didn't want to bother the very busy shopkeepers. In the end I settled for a slice of burned pizza. I was intrigued by some small very brightly colored pastry roll, but again it was so busy I didn't want to intrude. If I ever get back to Israel I'd like to hot the market maybe on a Wednesday.
@MFPhoto13 жыл бұрын
Late Friday morning or early afternoon is the best time to go. I usually don't like crowds, but you can really catch the flavor of Jerusalem when it is crowded. The last time I went was on Shushan Purim, which fell on a Friday. Not only was it crowded with shoppers, but also with celebrants. You must have had a private tour rather than a packaged tour. Lucky you!

Oren, you have have been so helpful that I want to return the favor. The meaning of "ptil" (פתיל) changes depending on the context. As someone else pointed out, it generally means thread. But the thread inside a candle is called a wick. The ptil t'chelet (פתיל תכלת) refers to the light blue string in the tallit. And my grandmother cooked her cholent (טשאָלנט) over the pilot light on the stove or over tea lights. I hope this helps.

P(e)til(i?)ot(h) is the plural for pethilah (פְּתִילָה), which is 'wick' (the 'fuse' in a candle) in English. (As it is slow cooked food, they made the comparison to slow burning wicks.)

From Wikipedia: Wonder Pot opened in the Talpiot neighborhood of Jerusalem (תלפיות-turrets) Wonder Pot (Hebrew: סיר פלא, seer peh-leh) is an Israeli invention for baking on top of a gas stove rather than in an oven used during the austerity period in the 1950s to help homemakers bake cakes and casseroles without an oven. France is more famous for its cheese than Wisconsin. France sets the standard for cheese all over the world. I enjoyed the video.
