Man, Ethan was such a wasted character. This guy, in a town of people hell-bent on hunting Blake and Lynn down to kill the Anti-Christ, was the only nice, considerate and (mostly) sane person you encounter, only to die at the tip of a pickaxe blade. Personally, here’s a version of the story I thought of that could have made his character better: -The meeting with Marta still happens, but in this instance Ethan survives, threatened with an eerie warning of death before she leaves. Afterward, Ethan helps Blake out of the cellar, at which point Blake tells him that the Heretics took Lynn. Ethan then tells him where to go to get out of Temple Gate to head to the mines. He then says that he will make his way around Temple Gate, scouting ahead in case he could spot the band that took her. Everything else proceeds as normal. - After escaping Marta, Blake meets Ethan on the outskirts of the town, and they begin to travel to the mines together. However, the hallucinogenic locusts still knock them into the Scalled quarantine, where Ethan scouts ahead again. The rest proceeds as normal, until Nick and Laird are hunting Blake along with an assembly of the Scalled. When all hope seems lost, Ethan appears, picking his wife out of the crowd and reuniting with her. Ethan convinces her that Blake is a good man and that what they are doing is wrong, causing the rest of the Scalled to rally against Nick and Laird, killing them as they did in the game. With the abusive duo defeated, the Scalled allow Blake passage to the mines. However, Ethan and Blake must split up by the lake, as Father Knoth’s followers tell Ethan to return to Temple Gate as they prepare to storm the mines. The rest proceeds as normal. - When Blake and Lynn escape the mines, they encounter Marta and are chased. Just before the killing blow is struck, Ethan reappears to strike the blow that kills Marta, mortally wounding himself in the process. Blake and Lynn thank him for his help and, with his last dying breath, Ethan tells Blake that he knew that he had lied about Jane Doe, but he is happy that he will see her again. He wishes them luck and dies as the rest of the game progresses as usual. Not only would this version of the story give Ethan a more lasting impact, it would also give him character development, show that there are still people who see through Father Knoth’s violent ways and cut out things that we already knew. As it stands, his role in the game was to show the brutality of Father Knoth and his followers, which we already saw and will see again with Josiah and Mary, and the extent of Marta’s loyalty to Father Knoth’s cause, which we already knew. TL;DR: Ethan’s character in Outlast 2 was unnecessary and poorly handled, but with a little bit of sprucing up, his character could have been much better.

It took a bit of consideration to put together a story where Ethan had more relevance, but I mostly thought about Father Martin’s involvement in the first Outlast. There, Martin served as a guide, leaving little hints as to where to go throughout the asylum. Not only was he an interesting character, but his presence and role in the story was more than enough for players to notice and pay attention to him. By having Ethan serving as a guide through Temple Gate, he would fulfill the role of guide as Father Martin did, but his character and attitude in the given situations would make him his own character and a memorable part of the story; that way, he would be similar but different.

Man this game is beautiful. Detailed environments, good voice acting, awesome atmosphere, and the sound design is fantastic. I loved the buildup as that guy ran towards you in the school, especially the sound design. Even the simplest thing such as finding another dead body brings horrific images and atmosphere. The hung girl who disappeared as you went around a tree is simple, but how effective. A small buildup with distant whimpering, sinister sound design, lighting focused on her so the player's attention is captured, and then she disappears with a simple movement made by the player. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

I think people are overlooking the entire trope of Jessica too much. I mean, as Blake is running through this village of dead bodies trying to find his wife before she's murdered, he gets a flash back to the FOURTH GRADE and says "I thought this couldn't get any worse." This means that whatever happened in the fourth grade, involving Blake, Lynn, and Jessica, is WORSE than what's happening now. On one hand. that would help explain Blake's lack of pure freak-out, if apparently he's been through worse. Blake and Lynn are staying rational because they've had a terrible experience. But, what the fuck happened to them when they were around NINE YEARS OLD that is WORSE than this?! You see, the school Blake remembers is a Christian school. A crucified Jesus is hanging in every damn room, and the schoolroom in the demo held many religious posters. Apparently, at the very least, Blake and Jessica were hiding from someone (I assume the person Mark keeps calling "The Principal") but were caught. Jessica tells Blake to run, and if he did, it would make sense that he (and possibly Lynn) escaped. But the hanging body that disappeared? That body looked JUST like Jessica from the photo. So what trauma did these children go through? And in all honesty, I have a feeling that a Christian school with, as Mark's assumption, a murdering (and possibly rapist) principal probably has a connection to a murderous, probably rapist cult. Things are way too coincidental here, and I still want to know what those children could have possibly been through that was WORSE THAN WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?

So... Mark, I'm sure doxens or dozens (possibly) dogs have told you this, but after you record w/ your video footage via the red circle and the camera icon pops up, you can review the footage and it will give you a little more information/ exposition with whats going on with hero boys memories, (ex. - if you had fully recorded the dead guy outside the heli crash in part 1 he'd mention something about him being he pilot)/ main story line as I know you enjoy the details...some of them are useful and definitely help with hero mans character development and may contain helpful hints and other exposition to help you through this beautiful nightmare. hope this helps. Maybe unlocks a full video at the end, not sure (P.S. please read my comment I left on your last subnautica vid, I want my birthday locker lol) anyways hope this helps . Michael Murawski I thought that too, but then again helicopters have been a way of transport now for a really long time now. Someone could probably look at the settings on the camera and pinpoint what era that travelling camera would doing to,but Mark has to record the game here for us so it's okay to skip stuff like that,especially when there is the possibility the game may give us a date for something, memory or real time.

Mark, one of the reasons telling Ethan his daughter was alive helped was because if he thought there was nothing left for him to live for he might have surrendered Blake over. So here's my theory so far. This place was originally a good, ordinary community, potentially a mining or farming community. Ugly, mentally unstable Father Knoth comes to town to preach the "word of god." The people listened to him and gradually bent more to his will until he eventually turned it into his own sex cult, as seen by his apparent affairs with Ethan's family (which I highly doubt were his only affairs). To avoid repercussion, Knoth claimed the children being born needed to die to serve "god," thus getting rid of children he was creating in the process. Anyone who spoke against him was branded a heretic and either imprisoned or killed in the numerous areas around the place. There were still people who rejected him and survived though, and thus the Heretic group formed to oppose Knoth and his cult. Now, I don't know what the deal with the light is yet, but it's obviously not a normal flash of light because it killed those birds. I don't have any theories around the pickax woman and there could also be other factors explaining why everyone went so insane, possibly being connected to the asylum in the original Outlast.
