It was just easier to tell themselves that OP's living in terror for over a year then nearly getting dragged off to someplace out in the woods, tortured, and murdered was NBD than to have to acknowledge all that and actually support her. They didn't know what she went through because they didn't want to know. Acknowledging that there are people like that out there would threaten their complacency that all the world is sweet butterflies and rainbows. It isn't, but they don't want to know about it, so they just didn't let it into their minds. They're still doing that. *Any* dog, no matter the breed, even a Golden Retriever, will probably fight someone who threatens their human. By saying the dog "snapped and could snap and do it again" is totally minimizing the extreme danger OP was in when her ex broke into her house. The ex intended to torture and kill OP, her dog knew this other human had evil intent, and attacked the enemy to protect his human. That's the Goodest of Good Boys. His restraint was remarkable in that he didn't attack the intruder until OP screamed and started running to get her gun. Dog knew for sure at that moment it was Go Time and he acted. He did his job and saved his human's life. He's a fucking hero and Brother and SIL are dicks who are so wrapped up in themselves they didn't even allow themselves to notice that over a year of OP's acting tough was fronting.

*Story 2:* Speaking from personal experience, its *shocking* how many people think that way. So many people think that after you endure a traumatic event, you can go back to a relatively normal life with no stress. Trauma rewires your brain to avoid situations that will put you in danger again. Often times, your brain will make odd connections as to what is and is not safe. PTSD is not just for veterans or people who have survived shootings and terror attacks. Trauma is a very real medical problem that is brushed under the rug and is not taken as seriously as it should. A lot of people have NO IDEA how much emotional trauma damages your physical wellbeing unless they've experienced it. I would start inexplicably tremoring at random intervals of the day for the first 5 years post-trauma & sometimes I would have no idea what connections my brain made in order to trigger an automatic fear response. I can't sleep without taking drugs. My body is hyper-vigalent of noises while I'm sleeping so I can't be caught off guard and attacked in bed. Thor sounds like a great dog, especially since he seems like a rescue and you do not always know how those have been treated. He dealt with the threat after the owner screamed , alerting him to danger, not before. He also came back after seeing the danger off, he was not out of control or "snapped" that's how a well trained protection dog would act. The guy is obviously fine too as he's in jail not the hospital. The dog also knows the niece well so it's unlikely he is kid aggressive. Though I understand SIL not wanting to take any chances I think it's likely they had some other reasons to not want her and the dog in the house. Sometimes people withdraw after tragedies, sad but true. Also they may have been laughing about the stalker behind her back and now feel bad as it al turned out to have been serious and true.

@@paulinadeboer3604 Yes and killing children doesn't come out of the blue the way some people think. They just didn't pay attention to the signs. I've seen some of the testing for dogs that have bitten a person or a child and some clearly hate children or fear them from having been kicked and abused by them. Its good advice to never leave a small kid alone with a dog, even their own dog as both have no reasoning skills yet and their face is right at mouth height. But it has nothing to do with showing proper aggression with not just a burglar but a known threat to the house and person. I can't imagine what anger that guy must have stunk of as he was trying to kill her. One of my neighbour's dogs tried to kill him, that dog walked with it's tail between her legs for years and the guy was mentally ill and probably aggressive. to the wife and the dog one day tried to deal with it once and for all. They put her to sleep while still on top of the guy. No one could have missed the signs that all was not well in that situation.

@@Iflie Yup, I've seen this a few times volunteering for animal shelters or in my own neighbourhoods. Sweet, kind dogs turned mean by mistreatment by owners or neighbours. I saw one that was tormented by kids on skateboards for years and ended up turning aggressive if it so much as heard the sound of a skateboard. Another who was tormented by the neighbour's kids and ended up aggressive with all children. Some of these dogs attacked or nearly did and everyone acted surprised like it came out of nowhere. That said, it is wise to avoid leaving a dog or cat alone with small children as you say. Even play for animals can be far more aggressive and violent than small humans can take and human children can unintentionally hurt an animal thereby provoking violent reactions from otherwise loving and patient pets.

@@uh8myzen Even if the dog is perfectly behaved if they see a baby or child as theirs to reprimand they can do a lot of damage as puppies are way more tough than a human baby or child. Cats tend to not break the skin with their teeth, they are remarkably controlled. Their claws is something they use fust and for a short time. They teach kids to back off pretty well. They always worry about a baby getting smothered, some cats will lay on the wrong place. Of course as the child grows this will be a non issue. It's always the parent's responsibility to teach their child how to treat animals with respect and how to give them space. Even a baby can be very gentle if taught.

That's not even soft, it's damn inconsiderate and apathetic. And OP isn't paranoid at all for thinking her slag-in-law and twat brother didn't want to give her emotional support so they made up a lie about Thor. No realistic person is going to say a dog is unsafe around loved ones because it attacked a threat. And from what OP explained the dog wasn't an issue before. The slag-in-law and twat brother were just apathetic punks and realized, too late, how inconsiderate they were. Of course though their pride wouldn't allow them to admit they didn't care about a relative's fragile state so they decided to make a lie and commit to it. And when my daughter was out late shopping, and a guy tried to run up on her, and Caramel went into protect mode, and brought the guy down. Had Thor "snapped," he would not have come back to you after you stalker ran away, and he most likely would have attacked you as well. Yes because those who ask for help make it easy on you you don't have to pay attention to their life at all you can keep your nose up your own family's butt your entire life and never know that anybody else is struggling because they didn't ask for help wow what a guilt free life you must live. The other side to that is that you never shut up about what's going on in your life and nobody else around you can have something else happen because it's not as bad. It's about balance you're not going to use the same balance with a family of clowns that you're going to use with a family of warriors. There's a difference in between weakness and victimhood. She didn't need anybody else's help she did everything she had to to protect herself none of it would have worked had the dog not been there. There's no way you can tell me that her family didn't notice her struggling and her jokes about the stalker and stuff like that unless they were like you where she had to ask for help that none of them could give that's not help. The ability to talk about your problems in front of other family members is whether or not these family members are going to help if they can help or if they're going to be there for support nothing of these people indicated that her asking for help would have been anything other than futile you know what that's called bitching. If someone is making dark jokes, I'll check in with them, but if they tell me they're OK I'm gonna take them at face value or assume they don't trust me enough to let me in and back off. I am superwoman when I know. My friends will tell you I'm always there to lend an ear, will do whatever I can to help, and multiple friends credit me with saving their life, but I'm not a mind reader. Then change the locks, install camera's around the property and make it clear that brother can sleep in that bed he made cause he's getting no further help from you. S2) Let me first say I'm sorry you got put through this OP. For you Thor's more than just a dog. He's the being that quite literally saved your life. If you have the police reports. the messages, the voicemails or anything else that shows just how dangerous this psycho was have it ready when you ask them to talk. Let them know just the constant fear you lived in with proof of just how bad it was. Remind them that your attacker is just in jail. That Thor isn't likely to hurt someone let alone your niece unless they're a threat to you. Story 2: I'm so sorry that this not only happened, but that people don't fully understand the fear involved in this kind of thing. They have an easy time mocking it because they don't understand how it sticks to you, how it's more like weaning yourself off that adrenaline "fight or flight" response rather than flipping a switch. Granted they also don't generally see/notice how it changes your response and reactions to things because they're not always there either. Had a wasp invasion that essentially kicked me out of my room, but they were getting into other parts of the house too (still don't know how, but with my room they'd chewed an entrance into the wall so that was lovely to realize). My friends knew I hated it and was generally afraid, but they didn't realize how badly I was affected until I was mentioning habits n' things I'd gained in the interim. I hate wasps. I'm afraid of wasps. I really don't want to be stung by wasps because unlike bees they can do it to their heart's content more or less. Those habits and those fears ebbed away as the winter weather started killing the rest of the nest that the pest control couldn't quite get, and eventually I didn't have to do walkthroughs of the house with a raid can in hand or didn't need to keep my glasses on when showering. It still took time for those newfound habits to drop and the anxiety to go away though and this was for something ultimately less serious than a stalker who was about to take things to the ultimate end.

When I was around 3 or 4 years old, I was nearly attacked by two VERY LARGE, aggressive/ _feral_ dogs. My mother had come over with me and my (then infant) brother to help my (now late) granny (her mom) weed her vegetable garden. My granny used to plant a HUGE vegetable garden each year with _all sorts_ of things (corn, tomatoes, peppers, okra, eggplant, squash, etc). My mom would come over and help weed it with her. My baby brother was asleep and placed into house, and I was in the yard (well within their sight). I heard a low growl and looked up to see two huge dogs a few yards away staring at me. I was a country girl, and had previously been warned NOT to run when I see a dog, so I nervously tried backing away slowly, but the dogs IMMEDIATELY followed. Well that was it for me, and I turned tail and RAN, screaming for my life. Unfortunately, my tiny baby legs were no match for these huge dogs. Had I fallen or tripped, I would have been ripped to shreds. LITERALLY. In fact, it's a _given_ that even if I _hadn't_ tripped these dogs would have 100% gotten me regardless...but our Lord God was watching over me; my mom and granny had heard my screams and came running. Remember when I said that my mom had come over to help my granny weed her garden? Well, they weren't exactly doing it by hand; they had _tools,_ you see. Keep in mind that this was DECADES ago, in the 1980's, back when tools were still REAL, i.e. made with long, thick, HEAVY, solid oak handles, and ends made of iron/cast iron. And my granny kept all her tools SHARP. And both my mother and granny _just so happened_ to have BOTH been using HEAVY, _recently sharpened_ hoes. ...you can guess where this is going. After the first several hits made contact with the dogs, they both turned tail and RAN hollering, but my mom and granny gave chase...just as the dogs had chased _me._ And before anyone goes feeling bad for the dogs, understand that this wasn't these dogs _first_ attack; See, these dogs had ALREADY attempted to attack OTHER, children in the neighborhood _as well as_ some ADULTS. The owner knew this but regularly laughed off complaints and NEVER bothered to leash his dogs. Unfortunately there are SOME selfish, entitled, *IDIOT* dog owners who fully believe that if they live in deep country rural areas they somehow "don't have to" leash their dogs. 🙄 So these dogs basically STAYED in other people's yards forever TERRORIZING them. This event has caused me to be absolutely TERRIFIED of dogs _TO THIS DAY._ Yet even with my extreme fear and trauma of dogs due to this event, I am 100% on this woman's side. The fact that SIL and her brother are unwilling to even try to come up with solutions tells me that they weren't as "close" to OP as OP thought. I have a feeling they were mainly just using her as free emergency child care and babysitting. I also think that OP's suspicions are correct when she says that they were using the dog as an excuse so they would not have to see her and deal with her trauma. I hope OP continues to get better and recover, and I hope she NEVER gets rid of her dog!

Op with the dog problem. My sister in law freaked out about my dogs because they bite people when they go on my property. She thought they would bite her kids. I showed her that my dogs will protect them from any other people including me. I grabbed my nephew and told him to yell like he’s in trouble and just like I thought the dogs were on me trying to protect him. She was sold afterwards. This was years ago but she has since gotten a new outlook on the dogs I keep.

My dog killed another dog when it came into my yard and attacked me. After the police brought him back and gave him a bath to clean up the blood I gave him a steak. Lol I had some people tell me they were afraid of him after that, I told them they can feel free to not come over. He’s not going anywhere.

Story 2: Brother and SIL ain't shit! Their family member can go through all that and they pile on more yet keep their distance?! Don't worry OP, when they're desperate for childcare again they'll miraculously get over it. I wouldn't be so quick to jumping back to setting yourself on fire to keep them warm.

I'd have been more malicious by manipulating niece saying "Sorry honey you can't see me or Thor anymore because Mommy obviously wanted the bad guy to hurt me and is mad Thor stopped him!" and when SIL protests, answer back that's exactly all you heard. Because quite frankly I wouldn't trust her again afterwards.

Story 1. Nta. Op should get a lawyer to write a letter to be sent to all family members who are abusing her, putting them on notice that their demands and bullying mean she will sue them all for the outstanding money. It might not have any weight, but would stress them a little bit :) OP should also get her kids to write letters to all the ahole's saying how cruel they are to demand Thier mother be away from them and that they are all horrible people and not real family. Let them handle that, too, and deal with the ongoing bad feelings from the kids

The only people responsible for their children are the parents, and if they get taken away by child services, then it's the parents fault. Brother and mistress are selfish and irresponsible, they don't sound like they are suitable or responsible enough to be raising children!! Perhaps the CPS wouldn't be a bad thing. OP shouldn't have to work overtime to support two full grown adults. Mummy didn't raise her precious baby boy very well 😂. Mum can house them, work overtime and support them. If not, she's just a selfish hypocrite.

Thor, the best thing is to have the niece bond with Thor, under close supervision. The dog will protect the niece too. One of my dogs was spoilt, I was warned she would attack my baby, not a chance, she wouldn't let anyone in untill I said it was ok. She had never shown any protective side before and always was friendly.

I don't buy that SIL and Brother of Story 2 didn't know how hard OP had it. How many events did OP cancel for her strength and tactical training, or just announced that she was unavailable for that time? The time to do that doesn't magically appear. Just one class/ session a week is a huge time commitment. My martial art class is one hour long: I leave home at 6pm, arrive and change, start class at 630, class ends at 730, between clean up, changing, and chatting I get home between 830 and 9pm. And if you are training to, no joke, no exaggeration, fight for your life, you aren't going to train once or twice a week. I agree with OP that they just didn't want to deal with her while she was fragile.

1... OP is not responsible to take care of brother's mistress or her kids. When they fail to pay their modest rent... eviction is required. Brother pays or mistress and brother GET OUT.

And brother's wife is 100% right kicking the serial cheater (and felon) to the curb. OP should just call cops: "These two you have warrants for are at this address."

It makes sense that he's the golden child because the mom was way out of line to think it was acceptable that Op take time away from her children in order to work more to fund a grown man and his mistress. HE put himself into this situation. It's time for mommy to stop coddling him and to get a job because he has a new mouth to feed.

S2 SIL can go kick rocks. Thor saved OP's life, he is a hero doggo. Much love to Thor, and virtual dog treats to him. SIL needs to read up on PTSD, stalking, and the toll it takes on people. then she might understand what OP is going through.

I bet SIL wouldn't call a person who did the same thing dangerous in story 2, or a "nicer" looking dog. Thor is a damn hero. OP would be dead or even more severely hurt and traumatised AT LEAST without them. Thor is amazing. Also the fact that OP offered to put Thor in a crate, like what does she expect Thor to be able to do even if they were violent then? I think people take the idea that people aren't entitled to anything too far. Yes OP is NOT entitled to a relationship with their niece or the whole family, BUT that does not make them trying to ruin that relationship because OP was nearly kidnapped and murdered not a HORRIBLE thing to do. It's the difference between legal and moral. And it's not like that was the only thing they did but SIL also continuously undermined OP's trauma and trauma responses and basically said Thor should have LET OP die... How can you defend that? Yes OP is not entitled to anything, but it's not about that! And OP NOR Thor did anything to deserve this treatment

I consider myself a man of peace. If someone broke into my home and tried to attack a family member, I'd get violent too. This is not 'snapping'. This does not make me a threat to children.

Keep your dog, he protected you from being killed. You are his pack leader and he would die defending you. Your brother and sil don't understand the trauma of what you've been through and need education about it. He'd probably protect your nibling because she's also a part of the pack.

Cant find my comment so here it goes. The op was almost beaten up, tied up, dragged out of her house, thrown into a car, kidnapped, taken to God knows where, tortured abused raped, and then worst case scenario she's thrown into a ditch after she's killed. Her dog stopped all of that from happening. There's a few people I know that would be like it happened. But there are most and the majority of the population who would go I am not okay. I don't agree with sister-in-law being like well the dog attacked before he's going to do it again. No this dog attacked because somebody who the owner did not trust did not like could smell that fear, and attacked and did what it was supposed to do. Even though it wasn't a personal assistant personal attack dog. I honestly think the sister-in-law has read too many stories, has listened to people talk about stuff like this, and his honestly believed and thinks that this dog will attack their child. I don't believe that. That dog is a hero. And protected Opie from the worst thing that could ever possibly happen to anybody. And that's what I believe.

Sister-in-law doesn't give damn about your safety. She's flexing, wanting to be the priority in the family, after all she gave the family a GRANDCHILD, and now your getting all the attention, how dare you. I have a family member just like her, she doesn't bother me, just the rest of the family. The rest of the family asks me what's my secret, I tell them she knows I don't give a damn about any of her games and I just laugh at her when she tries.
