My fervent hope is that the original person or people who built these buildings long, long ago can, somehow, look down and see how this wonderful “modern man” is so lovingly saving, preserving and honoring all that they did way up there on that mountain without one power tool or modern convenience 🙏❤️. This all takes my breath away…I’m so in awe. What an exceptional man of vision you are, sir. I applaude your passion. I’m a 79yr. old woman who resides in Vermont, USA….& never too old to be surprised by my fellow man 👌

Wendy Perrins I with you Sue. I’m a 72 year old women in Australia who loves the way this special young man is thinking of the original owners all the way through this build. It seems to me that all over the world people are stripping our countries of the old ways as if those people did not exist instead of honouring how hard people worked to build in times past. Life seems to be that now let’s just demolish the past and bring in the new. Yesterday I heard that even words in books are being taken out when they reprint them. Such a sad sad world we now are living in and I hate to think of the future because this is happening. Thank goodness I’m on the down hill run because this type of world does not make anyone happy in the end.

Just quick few points. (1) get 12 volt winch that is portable to insert into the trailer hitch temporarily when stuck. (2) if car is 4 wheel drive get steering chains for front wheels, if not get one chain for front, help in steering.(3) next time your in The Netherlands check out all the used greenhouse parts that may still be being sold. Around the Rotterdam area if I remember from 30 years ago. Great video as always.

I lived in the UK for 13 years and I don't believe i ever met anyone who said they had no idea of DIY - given the number of B&Qs and the number of TV shows dedicated to fixing DIY botch ups, I firmly believed all UK residents believed they were DIY experts. Dear Martijn, I'm more of a silent viewer/reader, but today I have a few suggestions for you: 1. Growing up in a snowy area and around 45 years of driving experience, it looks to me like you accelerate too much when starting in the snow. Try it in second gear. 2. It would never occur to me to place my bed so that one can see it directly from the entrance. My choice would be to put sleeping and working in the private and light-filled area upstairs and showering, cooking and sitting with guests downstairs. With easy access to the outside, no lugging groceries up to the first floor and all the dirt from the shoes stays on the ground floor too. 3. In areas like Arizona, where a lot of earthbag construction is done, a simple method is used to determine the quality of the soil. Fill a water bottle with some dirt and water, shake well, and then let it settle. The sand falls to the bottom, the clay floats to the top. Cement additions can also be calculated in this way. In this context, I would like to encourage you to think about an alternative floor instead of a soulless concrete floor. For example, an Ondul underfloor heating system, which is very popular in traditional Korean houses. This is fired from the outside with a rocket stove, this area then also serves as an outdoor kitchen. Very practical and safe. Hyperadobe earthbags could also be suitable and AirCrete is a very interesting new technology in terms of insulation. 4. The gutters are great. Congratulations!

About 41 minutes in, the sun hitting the roof stones, the warm wood tones of the new gutters, and the stones of the wall below... beautiful sight. And then the shiny (for now) copper downspout, the finishing touch... all of your vision & labour finally coming together, completed. It must give you great pleasure every time you look at it. Congratulations, Martjin!

Martijn , You are the 1st person that I have ever heard of wanting to put a pizza oven in their bedroom next to their bed and also have an open bathroom all in the same room. Why not make your kitchen / living area/office downstairs where the pizza oven will be ? Then add a door and a window or two facing towards the mountains and the valley. Then have your bedroom / bathroom upstairs . But please put up walls to separate the bed area from the bathroom area.

I think he wouldn’t get the permission to add doors or windows as they would be structural changes or the paperwork would take too long. I do agree that some sort of separation like a Japanese style sliding door to separate the toilet would have been great.

I think the existing door is on the second floor of the house, so he probably does not want the sleeping area to be seen first upon entry into the house. He's sole occupant of the cabin , so privacy is not necessary 😉

It seems to me you could extend and reinforce the short walls with piers placed every .5 Ms or so filled in with concrete and stone. This would save space from installing a short internal wall. Also, what about taking the downstairs for the kitchen and bathroom leaving the upper level for living space, warmed by the rising heat from below? And convert the long window to a glass door to provide light and Ingres/egress from the lower room.
@mattmattelig
@mattmattelig Жыл бұрын
I agree. all the plumbing can be on one level and baking bread would be much easier with the kitchen down on the lower level. while i like the idea of the oven built into the stove, making bread would be awkward using an up-stairs kitchen and then working around the bed. in addition, feeding the stove would be better in a kitchen/utility area as opposed to right beside your bed.
@vickiekunau5154
@vickiekunau5154 Жыл бұрын
I like your idea too! The lower level seems rather crowded with bed next to the stove - whomever is on that side, would be warm!! Then the commode out in the open, I would feel very weird using it that way? I may not be in tune with other cultures though who wouldn't have an issue with that. I also wondered what if Martijn has guests upstairs who need to use the facilities while he is downstairs? Kitchen being downstairs is an idea I really like. However, it's Martijn's call! Good luck to you!

Got a kick out of that moment at 34:21 where the kettle was boiling, you spun around to look for your mug, realized it wasn't there, set up a camera outside and started recording, went back to the tent, then walked back out to get your mug from the kitchen. The rest of the design has merit, but the lavatory inside the bedroom seems like a _major_ error (& would be against regulations in any country I've worked/designed in). Is it not possible to increase the wall height (i.e. to raise the ceiling height) in the "dog house", and use that as a (separate) lavatory room?

@@Laura-ue9ut Hello Laura. Everything will fit as per the CAD render, but having a toilet next to the bed and the fireplace on a similar close proximity are problematic. Having lived in Colorado my whole 73 years, had bad winters back in the 70’s, with snow level with the hood of my car. It was just a two wheel drive, I’d shovel a little, then get ashes from our wood burning stove it worked every time. Sprinkle in snow pretty thick and gives good traction. 😊

Mr. Doolaard, I suggest you to do the bedroom on first floor and living room downstairs. All cabins do that because warm air goes up so you can comfortably sleep in warm and dry. I also think that remove ground too nearest to perimeter wall can break balancing of forces on drywall and cause collapsing of cabin. Be cautious to "touch" dry walls, they're unpredictable. Bye

I totally agree, this was my first thought too. And it would supply a lovely space to sit and watch the fire in the stove, in case it has a glass door incorporated. What can be better than watching the fire sitting in a cosy armchair in winter. Even if the room upstairs has more height and light, having a beautiful sleeping/working space can't be underestimated. Stepping straight into the bedroom feels awkward to me and sort of the wrong way round.

Hi Martijn, according to some permaculture sources, there is a benefit in putting the chickens house close to the green house to use the heat produced by the chickens and heat up the greenhouse when it's cold. Thanks so much for sharing your work in such an enjoyable way to watch!

! agree about trying some permaculture practices ...maybe keeping the chicken coop somewhat light and portable(a chich shaw?) so you can move them a bit and not have to constantly clean the coop.. they would fertilise the ground and less parasite pressure to have a fresh bit to run around and forage ....

although being a german whose always tend to make fun of dutch people not being able to drive in snow i try not to make jokes about you getting stuck - my family has a cabin not very far from yours, so i know the area and how tricky it is to drive there in winter, even with a 4x4. Your car should be pretty capable - but two tips that might help: 1. put the chains on the front wheels - they got more weight on them since the motor sits on top. or: 2. since snow chains are cheap, get a second set and put them on all for wheels. (its annoying, but one gets pretty quick with some practice, haha. then put that car into 4 low (if you can, but i guess yours has that option?!) and then you should be able to go pretty much anywhere without much wheelspin. When i lived up there in norway i was shocked how much you could tow in the snow with a 4x4 in 4low. and: there are pretty big differences in snow chain quality, also when it comes to grip. we used to have some pretty agressive ones that had some kind of spikes welded to them (halved chain links pointing to the outside).

There is a song that comes to mind as I watch you. It is called, "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack. So, I say this to you, "I hope you never lose your sense of wonder. You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger. May you never take one single breath for granted. God forbid love ever leave you empty handed. I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean. Whenever one door closes, I hope one opens. Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance. And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance; I hope you dance." Sincerely, Shirley Moss

Those of us who have that experience knew that your plan to pull the trailer up that incline with your car was never going to work. Leaving vehicles and trailers at the top of a hill before the snow arrives is a good lesson to remember for the future. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and admire your work.

It’s very speculative, thanks to investors buying up lots of cheap properties for their portfolios, young people in places like London can no longer afford to buy a home and are locked in renting, often paying more in rent than a mortgage would cost, but unable to save the large deposit now required. I’ve seen a-lot of greed in that business and no concern for how it has distorted the market

@@monicacruz4407 Companies that make a business out of our fundamental right to live are very condemnable to me, so I agree with you on that. However, you are making a strong generalization here and assuming that I work in the residential real estate industry. That is not the case. I work for a company that develops and manages large mixed-use commercial properties for companies in a wide variety of industries. Of course, there are also investors behind this that expect certain returns. However, these investors are banks, insurance companies and also pension funds, which means that the income from leasing is also used to pay pensions. Think about that this spot right now is terrible imagine cleaning Stove from the ash you will have no space for that and mess all over your bed. Someone mansion about seperate the toilet from bedroom and i totaly agree. Even if thats will be for you alone only you will regret this setup. By the way would be better idea to have a stove in the Wall between bedroom and utility storage. That way you can have better Access to service it. And buy one with radiator in it that way you can use it to spread the heat to radiators in two buildings at the same time having only one stove. Keep it up you can do much better 👍👍👍

About the foundation for inside work as it is uneven being build on a small hillside you can look on the internet what we call here under pinning from the inside of the building. Now for keeping the element(water) out of the basement there is a rubber membrane specially for this. You have to dig down on the hillside foundation to the bottom and then install the membrane to top of the hill line,also when you have all the earth removes before installing the membrane you should install drain tile to devert the water from the wall,you can also look that up on the internet how this is done ,it's not to expensive but you should never have a wet or damp Basement.
