Mary, Thank you for this recipe. It is now one of my favorites soups! I was looking around for a good steak soup recipe and after making this hamburger soup recipe, I no longer have the desire to find a steak one. This soup is AMAZING. I believe the beef bone broth I made using your method in the crockpot made all the difference in the world ( I used marrow, shank and oxtails and got two batches).

I pointed a young friend in your direction Mary because her interest in home made food was kind dampened by the plethora of expensive kitchen equipment many channels call for. She was intimidated . I love how you always give old fashioned alternatives , like the handle of a wooden spoon for mixing bread dough rather than the dough hook of a Kitchen Aid stand mixer . Love all your videos and happy lovely company ❤️

It brings me such joy when I hear that my videos can help young people. And yes, I never want them to think they have to spend a lot of money! Mary, guess what? I just made Hamburger soup 2 nights ago. So similar to yours, except the croutons! I’m so glad you’ve given a demo on those today. Added baby spinach leaves (fresh) right at the end the last few minutes. The only thing else I added was sliced thin cabbage pieces. I just adore cooked cabbage. But my married son was quickly on his way to a church meeting, and stopped by and had two bowls w/ me. He said it was so good. Me……by time In fine cooking, I’m never hungry……but the next day it sure tasted good to me. How I would love to have the people of Ukraine come to my house for some delicious hamburger soup to soothe their saddened hearts and bring peace to them. I know they would feel like somebody cared about them. Thank you for the tutorial of homemade hamburger/vegetable soup at this sad time. You are an absolute dear of dears!!!

My mom grew up in WV, and this was an almost weekly staple in my house growing up. However as I learned to make it I start with the vegetables and water letting those cook. Then brown the meat and add it with the drippings into the soup, adding the tomato paste or tomato powder and seasonings. I normally season with salt, pepper and paprika. Your nutrient dense seasoning and umami powder is good in it too.

Thank you for walking me through this recipe, Mary! It made a perfect dish on this cold day to deliver to an ill friend who must adhere to a gluten-free and dairy-free diet; I simply substituted EVOO for the butter to sauté the meat and onions and served it with GF/DF cornbread instead of croutons. My sweet grandmother made a similar soup, but her recipe calls for adding “V8” in lieu of tomato sauce! 🍅

I personally like to add my preferred spice (excluding salt) the the oil to let the spices "bloom" then proceed with browning the meat. I then do pretty much the same as you do. Frozen veggies are my favorite to use in this soup.

Your soup looks lovely. I make hamburger veggie soup more then with a roast or such. I wouldn't be able to use that much spinach for my guy. I have used a few kale leaves straight out of the garden before..more as a garnish...I'm adding hamburger soup to my meals this week..thank you. I make croutons with left over bread which I've thrown in the freezer to keep from going bad. I use oil and butter in a pan like a cake pan with sides. Melt that in the oven. Cut up my frozen bread into my sizes or cubes.. take melted oils out of oven, stir in my garlic, salt, pepper, mix well then add my bread. Stir well. Place in oven. About every 10 minutes I take out of oven and give a quick stir. Repeat until golden..oh so good

Ordered some more clothes to fill in the gaps from having to purge half of it due to new allergies to polyester and nylon. Work is still going well. @Mary's Nest I have always been trying to find out when freezing bread dough, what is the process for a good loaf post freeze? I love making bread at home, but I like to do more than I need, and the post cooked loaves tend to get too dry on me after freezing. I also love the idea of pulling out a portioned section of dough for one loaf and have fresh baked bread almost daily. This point would be an excellent addition to your next bread video, or if it varies on type of yeasted bread, maybe its own video. I love your videos. Definitely going to be making this soup!!

Hamburger soup is referenced in menu's as early as 1914, that I have seen, and probably earlier. It was a soup, more like a mulligan stew. Recipes are listed in earlier newspapers, I have seen, as early as 1940. Hearty, full of vegetables, usually eaten with fresh baked bread. Adding dumplings is also an easy way of stretching the recipe. Your version of adding "croutons" sounds interesting.

I have found that anyone reluctant to eat organ meat really LOVES chopped heart curry, it's a brilliant carrier of flavour and the heart becomes beautifully tender. Me I love liver and bacon, stuffed hearts and fried kidneys and mushrooms on toast, I have at least one portion a week. My grandbabies like hearts anyway I do them, liver is about 1 teaspoon with veg, bacon and gravy. Kidneys are a definite no go atm lol, they are only 2 and 5 yrs though lol x
