Hi Nate, I have studied JKD with 2 of Sijo Bruce's original students: Dan Inosanto and Patrick Strong. I learned from hard sparring that to enter in with a straight lead and to drop it like you do is to open yourself up to a hard rear cross. The reason Sijo would use this was for demonstration, not for function. Hit hard and fast, and then retract to the start position to cover the line. Old school boxers would train the jab by retracting it and touching their nose with the jabbing hand. You also speak of intercepting with this punch. I would encourage you to have your student take an air shield, hold it flush to his body, charge at you, and using the same straight lead stop him and don't let him get inside of you after you have hit him, but send him back. If your using the right structure you will be able to do this: if your not then he will get in, and collapse your punch every time. I hope this helps man. Keep growing.

+Eric Martin Thank you, I do a similar drill with a falling heavy bag while its swinging. to stop hit and have the right structure. I will try your suggestion too!

Excellent vid! hey man - trained with a lot of pretty good JKD people but you're one of the rare ones who 'get' the little details of it which make the JKD forward hand strike so non-telegraphic and if done right - pretty much unstoppable. The secret is in the hand moving a fraction of a sec ahead of the body.....took me a long time to train that one in.

Best JKD in motion, I've seen so far.
@warbornexperience97969 жыл бұрын
Ninja Nate: you are by far the best person I saw on You-Tube with regards to showing JKD. I would highlight a few mistakes I am seen. 1: You have the motion down pack. There is a fluid motion that you are using. 2: What I am not seen is the violence behind your movenment. If you are pushing off from your rear leg, violently swing your hip, violently your back. And leting your arm fold. I should see that weight been moved from rear leg through your body to your fist. I am not seen that. 3: You should feel like you are going to be off balance if you don’t control the direction of the weight. 4: Your lower body becomes distorted when you are punching. Your lower body should be a hinge when you are doing the leading punch. 5: Punch through the target. Right now your demo, is your punch is brushing the target. It should be 6 inches behind your target. The JKD punch is like pop locking from break dancing. Without that distrubition of weight, the JKD punch is as weak a boxing jab. Wiith it, it stronger the rear hook from boxing. It is a boxing uppercut that become a jab. 6: I would reflect on my points. You are on your way to becoming a powerful JKD artist. With slight corrections, your punch could equal that of Bruce Lee.
@SifuNate9 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're getting at. It's not a perfect demo and their are a few things I may have missed or not performed perfectly. I was concentrating on a few basic things. I like your attention to detail though. I will have more realistic violent intent in my future demos. Really visualize smashing through. Instead of being to relaxed and casual with my demonstration. Mahalo for your advice! Keep blasting!! :)
@warbornexperience97969 жыл бұрын
Ninja Nate No worries. I didn’t want to come across off like a know it all or demening your value. JKD is the most hated martial arts in the world. As long as you are aware those points its all good. I would enjoy seen a demonstration on a punching bag. That way you don’t have to hold back your power. I like to show my students on a punching bag, a regular boxing punching, traditional kung fu punch and then the JKD punch. People only believe what their eyes can see. Stay focus and keep up the hard work. I know it takes years to get to the level you are at. Look forward to more videos from you.

+WARBORN EXPERIENCE Thanks, your comment definitely stood out from the rest, some try to just spout out their own opinions or what is wrong with the technique. Some I agree are more right than others but I don't always reply back to many of them to avoid longer arguments that lead no where. I respected your comment and you approached it very well and I appreciate that. Thank you for understanding and showing respect and tolerance like a martial artist should! I will definitely grow from your advice and suggestions. "Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them." Peace my brother...
@warbornexperience97969 жыл бұрын
Ninja Nate You are welcome it is rare thing to find respect in our world. I been watching your other videos. The points I made, I clearly see you demonstrate in other videos. You are the only person I have seen in the JKD community that uses the legs in their offensive & defensive techniques to bring your body weight from the ground. I am 35 and started JKD when I was 19. My experiences have been in real street fights and unsanticion matches against martial artists. When I was young, I didn’t understand that people hated JKD. That people knowing that you were into martial arts meant some would randomly attack you to prove you a fraud or prove they are tough. I am more conservative with whom knows that I have trained. I would have you ponder some points. JKD is the theory of evoultion in martial arts. We as JKD artist are suppose to be changing and growing. 1: I don’t punch with the bottom 3 of knunckles. I punch with the pointer & middle finger knunckles. They are the stronger points on the hands and you are less likely to break your hand. 2: We are suppose to use the “Intercepting Fist” beating our enemy to the punch. I find that to be dangerous technique. If you and I were to fight, even if you are faster then I am. It would be hard to intercept me. Basic physics would suggest you would have to be twice as fast as I am. Three times or more to have a advantage with your speed. 3: Energy conversion is the heart of JKD. The majority of time I don’t intercept nor block a attack. I evade attack, keeping in striking range. When the person misses, I capitalize on that opening. This techinque “Evading Fist” works against stronger & faster targets. 4: Soon you will reach your physicaly limit and feel like you are not growing. I would suggest learning Tai Chi and developing your Chi. If you can tap into the power of your emotions, your speed and power will suprass your physical power. It is a balance, training the physical and the mental at the same time. At any rate, I enjoyed our conversation.

RPG 808 How about no? If you read all my comments I explain to Nate what my experience was. I don’t feel to explain myself to you. The comments were for him and if he wants to implement them awesome. @therealawakener79 жыл бұрын
Very good clip. Just for the record though, so you can keep improving your teaching techniques, the returning of the punch is referred to as the 'Shortening of the Arc Principle' and it should be applied to all JKD strikes other than a lunging -step finger thrust. Also when your lead straight right is parried and you use the momentum of the shortening of the arc from the first punch to immediately generate a second straight punch that technique is called in JKD "The Redoublement". When done correctly the second punch is actually a 'dropping hammer punch' and not as you are doing another straight lead. The reason for this is that doing just another straight lead punch leaves too much room for the opponent to counter or defend whereas the dropping hammer subtly sends in your rising elbow to the opponent's sternum with the forearm blocking his field of vision just before the hammer punch lands on the opponent's nose. This way of redoubling is far more efficient as it entails the principle of 'Constant Forwards Energy'. I have a clip up fully explaining the Redoublement if you wish to watch it. Keep doing what you are doing. God bless:-)).
@kingsfieldnpc8 жыл бұрын
+LMA UK I get your point but JKD is a mindset, not a form of martial arts as Bruce lee implies so many times. anything applied as a form is not original and is someone else's use of it, which is still a good use, but Nate is applying his own use and understanding of JKD. But you are quite knowledgable I just wanted to throw that out there. Thanks mate!

Really like the punch. I espeacially use it to close distance to a taller opponent, intercept a slower attack or to catch someone, when he lets his guard down thinking he is out of range. The only problem i have with it is the follow up. You really get in a sideway position, which makes it hard to follow up with your rear hand without doing an extra step. So usually i step back afterwards. Would be nice to have a video how to keep momentum after initial strike. Also the risk of overturning you rear foot could be mentioned, since it happens easily and takes away some power of the punch and leaves you with some instability. Nice vid though. Thx

I've tried using the straight lead like this and because the body lines up into a side stance it makes following up with a cross or the other side of the body very difficult. Rather the body needs to be a little more squared so you can recover quicker and use both sides as his intends.

zibafu for the vertical punch the bottom three will give more support. Try to avoid putting to much pressure on the pinky knuckle though when hitting hard objects. Bottom three also have more surface area and you can snap your wrist upward for more force like in the one inch punch.

Lee deu um tremendo soco no peito do cara e o mandou longe. A plateia fez "ôoooo....", espantada. O locutor perguntou para Bruce porque ele fez aquilo. Ele respondeu: " Não empurro, soco!". Essa era uma pequena amostra do grande Bruce Lee.
