Honestly, I really good idea. Is the books that you can't part with is you keep them for your grandchildren. My mom tried to do this and I told her no get rid of them all and I only kept one book for my childhood and it ended up searching online for multiple books I had as a kid that my mom tried to have me keep for my kiddo. So my advice is the ones you can't part with store away and keep.

So my husband and I have worked out a system for us that has worked really great for things that aren't explicitly or exclusively within my "jurisdiction" so to speak (aka, things that are his or he uses primarily, or that we need to make a solidly joint decluttering decision on), and we call it the "Ask Matt" box (Matt being my husband) 😅 So if I'm decluttering during the day while he's at work, and come across things that it doesn't seem like we've/he's used in awhile, or it doesn't have a home and/or I don't know where the home is, or I'm thinking maybe he'd be comfortable parting with it, or we have multiples and I'm not certain if we need multiples, etc... then I put that thing in the box. Then once a week-ish, or when it gets full/we have time, we run through it together. I don't pester him about getting rid of anything in it, and he knows that just because it's in the box doesn't necessarily mean I'm wanting him to part with it. But it gives things that don't have a home a place to hang out while we go through our house systematically. It helps me a lot because I'm a SAHM of Littles and it helps to have a destination for those things while they're in limbo. And it helps him because he only has to answer questions about a limited number of items at a time and he doesn't get overwhelmed that way, but overall we still make steady progress. 😊

When people ask why you still find things to declutter, it is not only that kids grow and the needs changes, it's also that there is always new stuff coming in. It's a never ending process. We can slow it down but we cannot completely stop it. Specially with kids! Great job. Love your videos. From Argentina 🇦🇷
@NatalieBennett Жыл бұрын
There is WAYYYYY less stuff coming in than what it was like before. My shopping habits have changed so much since I started decluttering. It’s mostly just necessities now with a few “fun” things purchased with intention! Even the most intentional or minimal homes, though still have stuff to swap in and out this the cycle of decluttering is never ending! Just like you said!

Fun vlog Natalie.. you have come so far. Yes decluttering is personal.. you can be minimal in some areas and not in others (I love that you are proud of your books😊, but you still only have what you love... so you are still minimal!.. there are NO RULES to minimalism). Plus everyones "stuff stress threshold" is different. What I find interesting is how Americans always talk about "storage" in homes.. in Europe we don't have any storage "built in" our houses.. you buy/rent "the shell" (as you call it) and then you buy the storage you personally need eg waredrobes, cupboards, etc...if you move house, you have to take it all with you (also you remove all light fixtures, curtain rods and curtains etc because everyone has different tastes, so they don't want your stuff. In rentals you also have to paint all walls white before leaving).
@NatalieBennett Жыл бұрын
So interesting. So are there never closets or alcoves for storage ever?
@rebeccarendle3706 Жыл бұрын
@@NatalieBennett No not in "modern" houses ie since the 1950s... but if you have a 200 to 500yr old house someone may have put a shelf or small cupboard in a nook eg next to an old chimney flume.. but most get ripped out again because the chimney gets ripped out over time either to replace it or to remove completely because it doesn't work anymore..especially in the bedrooms upstairs. You may still find an inglenook fireplace in a living room, dining room or kitchen which often have some shelves in the wall beside it (where an old door went to another room or to the stairs leading up to the bedroom)... this is especially true of 200+yr old houses in the UK. In modern houses, if its not open concept with floating stairs you might get a "Harry Potter" closet under the stairs.

Those bookends are amazing. They last. They may not be pretty but you know what they hold up your books and they don't take up extra space. I tried all the pretty ones years ago and now for many years when my wise old grandma showed me the metal ones she said this will give you your space back and organization. They're the bookends every household should have. But I love toys you use them you can't even tell there on your shelf so I have family members that use them and they put a pretty knick-knack next to it that doesn't have to hold up the books. Your videos are always so amazing and inspiring. You make me look at the things I get frustrated about and be grateful. I'ma front closet it's small but it is housed six-plus of us. My kitchen cabinets aren't a lot but you know what when I look at what I really have to have and not what I think I have to have all of a sudden my house feels bigger. I used to put a lot of stuff on my walls I have become a person that does less and I've noticed my family members do as well it feels so spacious. One day my daughter found a picture she's in her early twenties. It was the time when you had to have knickknack shelves and all the stuff on them and it had them a lot of stuff on your walls and all the knickknacks. My daughter said oh my mom it doesn't even feel like we live in the same house and she laughs and she says what made you decorate like that. I said well that's kind of how they did it and many people still do. I feel like I can breathe I don't have to dust all the stuff like I used to have to. Years ago we donated so much stuff that the donation truck that we were moving. No my house wasn't a hoarder house it was just lots of stuff in that I had that were Hudson a small space and because it was my grandma's. I realized I can have pieces of my grandma it doesn't mean it has to be everything and it doesn't have to be big pieces.

We just purchased a library cabinet for game storage in our family room, and after watching your video today, realized I must’ve been influenced by your living room cabinets. It’s the very same style and color, just taller. 😂😁 Are your cabinets from the Threshold line at Target? I searched the internet the world over and kept coming back to the library cabinet. Taller than the TV cabinet/sideboard style you have, but not as tall as a bookshelf. It’s perfect! In January I decided to sort through our board games - keep, give away, and I don’t know. We’ve had two game nights with friends so far playing the ‘I don’t know’ games. A few of those games have joined the keepers in the cabinet, and some have gone the way of the giveaway pile. Maybe one more night and we’ll have gone through all of them! 🙌

🪑 Just from the intro clips, I feel like this video will be so relatable! Also I saw a shot in there with the book I Am a Bunny - my son’s favorite book! My mom buys it for literally anyone having their first baby because she thinks everyone should have a copy.

🪑 I’m just beginning my purging journey after living in this house for over 25 years. It’s going to be a big job! Plus my husband isn’t exactly helping. I wanted to de-clutter some of his coffee mugs. I got them all out of the cupboard and asked him to put the ones he REALLY wanted back into the cupboard. He had put every single one back. Then I was going through our kitchen utensils and since I had 2 stainless steal spatulas I de-cluttered the old one that was all scratched up. He said “you realize you’re decluttering my favorite spatula?” We haven’t used either one of them in months! Ugh!
