As he said in the video, the two characters and these two titles represent the different responses to trauma and loss; some suppress it all and try to move on looking to the future, while others dwell in the past and mourn.

One thing of note is that "the blue character" is often called Blue by the others. One of the things I love about this song is the (I assume deliberate) ambiguity in the wording... it's not necessarily about feeling *sad*, per se. It's especially helpful to have seen more of Yellow's character before this song. Basically, is the line "What's the use of feeling blue?", or is it "What's the use of feeling, Blue?"

I like the messages you took, but in Do it for Her there's actually kind of a darker meaning. Pearl, the mentor, is teaching Connie to place steven above her, to worship him and be prepared to lay down her own life at any point to save him - because in pearls eyes at the time, Connie is "just a human" but Steven is special and deserves to be saved. Its indicative of how Pearl herself struggled with subservience and being "less" than that person she worshipped, how she would save her time and time again because she was nothing and rose was everything. Its very sad

To me, Do It For Her wasn't as positive as Matthew thought it was, it was like Pearl projecting her past onto Connie and wanting Connie to literally risk her life for Steven because that's what Pearl thinks love is, to Pearl she was just Rose's knight, her life didn't matter as long as Rose was safe and she's trying to get Connie to have the same mindset and it's working, she's convicting her that her life doesn't matter and that the only way she has purpose of protecting Steven, of course she doesn't think that's a bad thing, she thinks it's noble, she thinks it's love but it's not

Yeah. If you don't have context, especially for a show as complex as Steven Universe, it's easy to not catch all the main themes in the songs. The song "Do it for Him" for the most part does sound like an uplifting song, but there are a few lyrics that, if you listen carefully, point out how toxic the song actually is. Like when Connie said "With my mere existence I can make a difference." Showing this mindset of caring less about self and more about Steven. It's small things like that that make you realize, but if you're not listening to deeply analyze it's very easy to miss the aim of the song.

Uplifting message in “Do It For Her?” Yeah, it probably helps if you have the context, but this is a REALLY dark song. It’s about how Pearl sees herself as essentially worthless except for what service she can give to what is essentially her master, and how she’s slowly making Connie feel the same in regards to Steven. It’s heartbreaking when you see the emotional denouement of the episode (“WHY WON’T YOU JUST LET ME DO THIS FOR YOU, ROSE?!”)

so yellow Diamond's song is probably my favorite song in the show and it does so much for her and blue's character they ar e both mourning the death of a loved one, but they both took ti to opposite extremes blue ignores her responsibilities and her followers and spends most of her time in tears and sorrow, unable to proppably vent her saddness or move on from it by herself, but yellow, instead goes fully into her responsibilities and work, avoiding the pain and sadness by distracting herself with her responsinilities. so here we have her trying to help blue out of her own funk, while revealing how she has been dealing with the pain. they may be murderous god-like dictators, but their emotions are so human

The blue and yellow giants are mourning the death of their sister(essentially). One thing that's always so interesting to me is howthe yellow one keeps insisting that the blue should forget and move on, but then it later gets shown the yellow giant is perpetually burdened by feeling like she is responsible for the death of her sister because she didn't protect her enough so this song is really yellow diamond trying to get blue to stop being sad because it's reminding her about it and she's just trying to suppress the guilt.

god I still love the line of "what's the use in feeling blue" because of the double meaning. Of course you have the surface meaning of "feeling blue" being the metaphor of feeling sad, having Yellow Diamond saying that there is no point in feeling sad when you could move on and forget in order to feel better and no longer so grief stricken. But of course there is the meaning only obvious to the people who watch the show and know that the "Blue Character" has the name Blue Diamond, usually just shortened to "Blue". So in reality Yellow Diamond is saying "What's the use in feeling, Blue" This obviously meaning that Yellow Diamond see's no point in emotions at all which is indicative of the Homeworld gems morals and value systems, where they value perfection and efficiency over emotional connections, and that Blue Diamonds over emotional grief stricken state has caused her to become in efficient in her work, which is shown earlier in the episode where Yellow has said she has been running Blue's colonies. I just think that how so much meaning can be taken out of one line of a song, and its that exact reason why I love Steven Universe music and the show in general

With full disclosure Connie is Stevens closest friend in the world and he doesn't want her to get hurt because of his involvement in gem stuff so he's not "disclosing" To her the "full" Truth of what's happening (Connie is the girl pearl is training in do it for her) In what's the use in feeling blue the main singer is yellow diamond and she's singing to blue Diamond because she's mourning the loss of pink diamond (rose quartz and Stevens mother) and she's telling her that they all miss her but there's no point crying over it because it won't change anything and the little people are pearls (like the main pearl) and all the diamonds (there's 4) have one as like a assistant Do it for her starts out as a song to train Connie but pearl starts changing the lyrics to apply to her and rose quartz (who she fought alongside of during the great gem war)

Hmm, I've never seen anybody come away from Do It For Her with the impression that it was uplifting. Is there a specific reason you feel that way? In the early lines, I can see it, but I feel like they did a good job of showing how Pearl's focus on self-sacrifice wasn't exactly conducive to a healthy partnership, especially with Steven's growing discomfort with lines like "prepared to die" and "with my short existence". Pearl's lines really start to come across as "Your life and well-being don't matter, everything you do must be in service to [other person]." Though I guess that aspect is explored more in-depth later in that episode, and chances are most of the people I've talked to about it didn't listen to the song without the context, so that might be why it seems so weird to get that message from it.

i love whats the use of feeling. i love the play words between "whats the use of feeling blue" and " whats the use of feeling, Blue" as saying that not only is useless to be sad is useless to feel in general. But yellow ends up breaking at the end of the song anyways

8:20 Some added context for this song but a bit of a minor spoiler: Steven is the son of Rose Quartz, the bigger woman protected by the instructor. But because she is a space rock with a body made of projected hard light, she can't 'give birth'. It's fair to say that in a sense she sacrificed her own life to have this baby with a human man. Because Pearl loves Rose and Connie loves Steven, there are parallels there. But part of Pearl's arc is that she hasn't really gotten over Rose Quartz' 'death', and has been a little codependent and self-effacing in regards to Steven. It's fascinating, but Pearl has a lot of growing to do in this series.

Hello there! May I present to you, the Emmy Awarded Song from Tangled the series, Waiting in the Wings? It’s super beautiful, sad and relatable, and just 1 of the absolutely amazing songs from its series. (Another is “Ready as I’ll Ever Be” which you probably heard somehow somewhere, that thing EXPLODED when it first aired and honestly introduced a lot of new fans to the show.)

I'd also like to point out that the name of the blue giant is Blue Diamond, or Blue for short. So Yellow is asking her "what's the use of feeling blue?" as in why are you sulking and feeling down. But it also means "what's the use of feeling, Blue?" asking her why she is so hung up on emotions when there are more important things to worry about.
