I feel like that bug was kinda like a metaphor for a lot of us that are on this creative journey. People (the bug) will naturally try to get in your way and irritate you and drag you down, the key is to realise your talent and worth and let go of anything that stands in your way.

The issue for me is money and the fact that everything around me is so darn flat and I get discouraged because I see posts on instagram where people are standing in mountain tops but at the same time I’m inspired. But then I end up looking at my photos and think they’re not good enough.

Favourite part: Around 13:05 - Matti magically 'disappears' the ND filter, with a quick flick! ONLY on an EOS R/RP can you do that. Brilliant - and the perfect sort of time you need that quick flexibility and useability. Such a Canon thing - not overly complicated, and just works. Great video Matti. You definitely lay it out there for people who want to get into the work, or stay, or work on the periphery. I find I've never had the opportunity to spend a lot of time on personal projects, except when working for internal stuff with bigger clients. There I've been more a 'piece of the puzzle', rather than the whole puzzle. Some of my older stuff from 4-5yrs ago got more attention from me. Last few years has been heavy web development and photography. I'm finally starting to sit down and focus on the creative end more now. Always find your stuff to be educational and inspirational. Cheers from Vancouver!

I'd beg to disagree about the thought of being born with a "creative eye" This goes back to a fixed vs a growth mindset. look it up. Its a very interesting and encouraging read. basically its if you think that *insert any skill here* is fixed and you'll never get better you'll never get better vs with practice and constant feedback and iteration you can be better. While it is true that it's hard to teach the "creative eye" there are certain principles in video which lends to beautiful images. rule of thirds. Shutter speed, contrast, leading lines etc. So knowledge of these principles and basically exposure to thousands upon thousands of different video styles that appeal to you. You can emulate that and when internalized well enough add your personal touch to it. Of all that was said in this video that is the only thing I strongly disagree with.. As cliche at this sounds it all starts in the mind. Whether you think you can or you can't either way you're right - Henry Ford
@natureSelection5 жыл бұрын
this is just so true. especially when it comes to art. who defines what is a "creative eye". it all depends. and that way a cook needs to be "born to cook", a mason needs to be "born to build things", an accountant needs to be "born with the affinity of numbers" and prob the oldest one u all heard.. "a salesman is not made, he is born". I did my apprenticeship in "commercial" business, like from sales to accountant everything really. and let me tell you one thing.. good salesman are MADE. they are made through a lot of practice, training, dedication and really wanting to be good. sure there are (like everywhere else) people who do it better - there is ALWAYS a bigger fish - but when it comes to videos and photos, painting... I think its kinda the opposite way it is going right now. Everyone copies "the most famous" style. They see something good, and try to achieve that look to become famous themselfs. I mean.. this is good to learn stuff and how to do certain looks and compositions... but you really need to develop your own style. shoot whatever and however you want it to look like, and if you put dedication, training and don't "stop" at a certain point you'll become better. dont ever let anyone else tell you that "you dont have the eye for it". no one was born and everyone around was like "he/she is made for..." it is all developing through your childhood, preferences, exeriences. just stop looking what other people do and tell you, focus on your own. those things people often talk about are like the top 5 - 8% of people where it depends on talent. the rest (like all of us) ... it all learnable. And now.. go outside and take a picture, or shoot a clip.
@VladimirLem865 жыл бұрын
Agree... being "creative" is in the mind of the beholder. It's no different than being able to draw... the more you do it, the better you'll get. It's as simple as that. The creative side of it is literally what makes it yours. The more and more I watch matti, the more and more I disagree with him.

I was a welder for 15 years and I always had a knack for photography as a hobby . last year I decided to quit something I hated as work and start something I love into a career. I had planned on learning the ins and outs of photography from youtube creators (such as you). Well after 9 or so months I started networking with local photographers and really putting in work to make this my future. last month I was offered a job with a local news studio for being a camera operator. I never dreamed that I would get into the industry so fast. but I taught myself how to be professional in 10 months, just by getting off my ass and doing it. Now my company is sending me to school for my UAV license in Virginia. Anyhow, just thought this might help someone get off their ass and do it! PS welding is fun as hobby lol Cheers!!!

But then I have people who really like what I do and more people happens to know me and they also love what I do. So that must mean something. I think it's that feeling when you walk somewhere and you suddenly stop and take a shot and everyone ask you "how did you took that photo? " That's when you realize you can become a photographer. Or a videographer. You just "see things " differently and can picture that on photos or videos :). Thank you for sharing this.🤘

In high school I honestly thought photography was dumb and never tried it.. Then it just happened when I wanted to start making some car videos and it all just clicked for me! Definitely think we ALL have our gifts and we shouldn't deny them. For me, it seems to be this video / photo outlet. I LOVE it now and going all in. I didn't think I'd have all 5 of the things you listed but they apply to me. I also really believe that the market will tell someone if their work is good or not. Like it takes time but however if people aren't looking at your work and wanting to hire you, could be a point to re-evaluate.

Oh man I needed to hear this. I've always loved filmmaking but the money part always scared me and I felt like I could never get equipment good enough to get going and be taken serious. I believe I have a good eye, not sure how talented I am yet. But, I've been a slave to the chef life so I know hard work, and it has financed my equipment thus far. Almost a year ago I started filming outdoor vlogs doing what I love to do with two cheap (used) gopros. My channel isnt big (at all) but I can see how much I've grown. At this rate I should be able to leave my job as an exec chef and fulltime create content for other restaurant owners and small businesses in another year. Interning for a restaurant consultant firm atm. Again thanks soo much cus Ive felt that breaking point this week. 👍 Much love #neverquit

Great subject, thanks Matti. Brave of you to talk about this as I found that the world of social media has made everyone a ‘photographer/filmmaker’. Creative eye as you call it can be channeled out in so many other ways and many creative people will find several ways to show it over their lifespan. I personally find that photography and especially filmmaking is almost too technical (yes for sure can be learned) and creativity gets limited and frustrating as limited capabilities in technical department although I have a clear vision how I would want things to look...perhaps just need the other point you mentioned hard work or in my case that means finding time (while running my business to stay alive) Camera is just another tool as is paint brush, instrument etc. Some are more technical and some creative, I find that’s almost impossible to have both extreme talents in one set of brain, combined these two now we are talking! Thanks 🙏🏻 Matti

This may be a bit too heavy for some, but I want you to know this video may have contributed to saving my life. I was a full time attorney for 24 years, hating every minute of it, and living an uninspired and sedentary life. I finally gave it up a couple of years ago to pursue photography full time. However, this past June, the past caught up to me, and I had a heart attack at age 52. I knew I needed to turn my life around... quit smoking, eat healthy, and get in shape. Even with the so-called wakeup call of a heart attack, I still didn't feel inspired. Until I saw this video. The way you kayaked out to that island, all the while doing your VLog, completely inspired me to do a total 180. Since then, I've been fully committed to regaining my vitality, eating healthy, going to the gym 6x per week, and of course I quit smoking. I'm not sure these words fully capture the magnitude of the effect this video had on me, but please believe me. It was profound. I'm doing great now, and I just got my blood work back. All of the working out and healthy eating has paid off. My numbers look GREAT. I'm getting inspired to go out and make art in farther, wilder places that I could not have reached having been in such poor shape previously. Thank you Matti, from the bottom of my heart.

I think most people want to be succesful $$$ "youtubers" and not "filmmakers". In my case I do not "aspire"; success will come if it comes.
