Hi everyone! Sorry that content has been slow this week. I'll try and make a shorter version of this video set to music that should be uploaded at some point next week, but not sure when. A lot of stuff has/is happening with me IRL right now so it has been hard finding time to spend making videos. One of the things I'm dealing with is looking for a new house to live in after having a bit of a battle with my current landlord, which is eating up a lot of my time. Should be business as usual following this, thank you for your patience and continued support :)

And now 3 years later, the SLS is a real, tangible thing, the gateway has full funding and the launch plans are basically scheduled in. We're going back!
@Cleptro
@Cleptro 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, they actually funded the gateway? I haven't heard much about Lockheed Martin's Mars plans lately, so that's good to hear! The only thing I've seen lately is that there is an SLS completed, a second well on the way, and a third beginning construction; while SpaceX's StarShip continues to make steady leaps forward to eventual completion. If either rocket launches before the end of the year (I'm assuming SLS won't, it's scheduled for next year), it might make 2020 just about tolerable.

@@randomguy-jd8su A pressure test in which it lasted hours at a pressure 260% what it was rated to handle. Like it or not, SLS is making progress, and WILL launch by the end of next year. Artemis 1 hardware is complete, they have a launch date. October 2021, if I recall correctly. There's a lot of Artemis 2 hardware existing, and although it isn't yet complete, it also has a launch date in 2022. I will submit to your point on Artemis 3, although if the first two Artemis missions are successful, I doubt the third won't be done in time for a 2023 launch.

"either that, or the upper stage will be fully robotic" That would make the most sense, and it was the original plan back when the SLS was called the Ares V. Bring up the crew in the Ares I, bring all of the equipment and modules in a separate, unmanned rocket. Automated docking has come a long way and it's really not that difficult to assemble things in space with robotic arms now. But... for some reason they decided to combine it all into one for SLS. I'm sure there will still be a variant of the SLS which will be cargo only. And for when NASA does need to just send people up, they can hitch rides aboard SpaceX rockets.

@lucistired
@lucistired 6 жыл бұрын
I hate to keep doing this but that's not the right Orion upper stage. The one you recreated is the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion stage (which will fly only on EM-1) but the Deep Space Gateway will be built using the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). Also, NASA doesn't collide their stages with the Moon. Bits of rocket hitting the surface that fast has a high likely hood of creating space junk, so instead they use a gravity assist and allow them to fly into deep space. For EM-1, a handful of cube-sats will be deployed later from the ICPS to test radiation and such.
@MattLowne
@MattLowne 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I mentioned the design a bit more in the alternate version of the video (out tomorrow hopefully). I mashed together EM-1 and SLS block 1B cargo to showcase both crafts, and the fact that crewed missions are more fun!
@lucistired
@lucistired 6 жыл бұрын
The Block-1B will be crewed, and your construction was accurate. The only mash up was the second stage. Good video, though.

@lucistired
@lucistired 6 жыл бұрын
They're not going to do that because the third stage of the SLS is carrying a series of cubesats (I believe 8?) to be deployed into deep space for observation as I mentioned.

I think it's important to remember that, right now, SpaceX is just a decently successful and promising launch provider, while NASA and its contractors (an ecosystem to which SpaceX belongs -- the company wouldn't exist without NASA infrastructure and government customers) have considerable experience in human spaceflight and interplanetary robotic missions, both from a launcher and a payload perspective. Meanwhile NASA has to contend with constantly changing priorities and funding cuts. SpaceX's figures aren't public, but plans like the BFR seem to try to probe a market that doesn't exist, and it seems to me that there's only so much money you can raise by offering rich idiots translunar flybys. Grandiose plans don't count for much if you can't see your way to enacting them.
@pegasusted2504
@pegasusted2504 6 жыл бұрын
Enrico, it won't be limited to rich idiots mate. If they get the point-point on earth sorted for the BFR I think it would revolutionize long distance earth travel, especially for things like business or possibly disaster relief....

Same with Elo claiming he'll be on Mars by "X Date in near future". He always claims that, and then moves the goalpost (Most likely because a near-future Mars Mission is unprofitable for anything other than hype). Like, I know how much he's accomplished, and that's all amazing, but surely there's only so long he can dangle a carrot on a stick before the fanboys lose interest.

Regarding that separation ring that you use, it's much easier if you just attach the engine of the second stage directly to the docking port of the module and then decouple the docking port when you want to separate. You can even right click the docking port in the VAB and enable staging on the docking port. That way there will be no separator in the way and Jeb doesn't have to get out and push.

Hey just wondering, are you sure that the missions constructing it would be manned, I’m sure it would be more efficient to do it unmanned becuase you would have to include food, o2, and other such things

Cool video man, but I have to ask: what graphics mods are you using?

I think "Scratched DVD" would be the best kind of reference to that kind of medium you would get.

Matt, you were talking about the altitude that the station would be orbiting at - it's not exactly a lunar orbit, they're planning on putting it at L1, and unfortunately Lagrange points don't emerge in a patched conics simulation.

Do you really need to circularise over kerbin? Why cant you just boost to the mun straight away? (Just a thought)

Cool video, I would recommend you spend more time on the sound of the video next time. The beginning had some double music and not very well equalized sound effects. Just a tip :) Keep up the videos!

i've just docked to a station for the first time, heres what happened: i tried to disconnect the command pod so i could return the crew to kerbin, and it exploded, i immediately tried to get everyone out of the pod, but i only got one, then i docked the station to the pod again, then i sent a replacement pod with a new crew and extra monopropellant, it worked *swimmingly*

I vaguely remember to have had a similar problem - or even exactly the same. Fairly sure there's a key that you have to press in order to toggle the display of markers. Should be easy to google.
