45:00 Who would’ve guessed Sonic would finally get his movie (and a whole trilogy) decades later. This vid has definitely educated me cause this whole time I thought Boom was just a spinoff game to tie in with the show, and its flop shouldn’t have left such a dent in the franchise.

@@rocketpunchgo1which means it'll be even more interesting. I hope he finds someone who was part of the team and is willing to talk about what exactly they were trying to update or rework during those days it was offline but Steamdb kept showing update activity being done leading to the final shut down And if that person knows if they really had enough animated clips for the weekly mini episode thing, that'd be interesting to see, because lost media has its own charm. Also if the game was once meant to be single player and were forced to make it a live service or whatever

@@GoldAxe64It’s a bit more than three. There’s Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Secret Rings, The Black Knight, Boom, and Forces. Unleashed wasn’t bad but the Werehog definitely killed the game for a lot of people. I mean I like Sonic but there are plenty of bad Sonic games in 3D alone.

How about a video on Tales of Phantasia? It was an RPG released by Namco on the Super Famicom and only in Japan. It was pretty ambitious for the time, with its most notable feature being fully real-time battles when most RPGs of the era were turn-based. While it was a fairly successful game that started a successful franchise that's still going to this day, it had a pretty turbulent and drama-filled development that led to two-thirds of the planned story being cut and most of the development team jumping ship to form their own company. A What Happened episode on it could be interesting, and with another game from the Tales series getting a remaster this month, and supposedly more Tales remasters in Bamco Namdai's pipeline, now would be a pretty good time to talk about the game that started it all. The story was meant to be told in three parts, each focusing on a different protagonist, but only the third and final part, starring a young swordsman going on a journey through time, survived. The first part is almost entirely cut out, with only the final battle of that part remaining in the finished game as an automated sequence that happens at the very beginning of the game (as in, literally as soon as you click New Game on the title screen) with zero context, with the part's originally planned protagonist's only appearance being dead on the ground during that sequence. The second part was condensed into an extremely short and extremely forgettable subplot early on in the game, with this part's originally planned protagonist also being dead, only appearing in the final game as a ghost temporarily posessing another character's body until the subplot's conclusion. Even the third part wasn't fully intact, having a few cuts and changes. For example, Brambert the elf was supposed to be a party member but was changed to a very minor NPC, and all of the characters recieved pretty big visual redesigns, and a few of them had their names changed as well. The redesigns seem to have been made very late though, as the character sprites in the final game are based on the original designs, so presumably they didn't have time to make new sprites. It also doesn't seem like they had time to rewrite the story to account for two-thirds of what they planned being axed, as many plot points seem undercooked or come out of nowhere in the final game, when they would have been properly revealed, expanded on, and built up during the first two parts. Chief among these undercooked, out of nowhere plot points are the main villain's backstory and motivations, which you would have learned early on in part one, but are not revealed until literally THE ENDING in the finished product. In spite of these major cuts and setbacks, the game was still successful and still managed to start an enduring franchise, as said before. The original game got a few ports and remakes over the rest of the 90s and the 2000s, but the only one that ever got released outside of Japan was the Game Boy Advance version. While not terrible per se, the GBA version is generally viewed unfavorably due to being a step down from the prior Playstation version visually and mechanically, as well as having a somewhat spotty translation. Speaking of translations, the only way to play this game in English prior to the GBA version was a fan translation of the original Super Famicom version, which is notorious for having tons of raunchy dialogue that was not actually in the Japanese script. Back then, it was not common knowledge that this explicit dialogue was completely fabricated, so the GBA version was accused of censorship when it first launched, adding to its bad rep at the time. Thankfully nowadays the Super Famicom fan translation being garbage is much more well-known. Oh wait, there was one more version that got an English release. The mobile version. This version was absolutely terrible. Why? Because they added tons of microtransactions to the game, and significantly increased the difficulty to the point where you were basically forced to use them. This version was slammed by angry fans, rightfully so, and it was swiftly delisted and hasn't been available since. Thankfully whoever was responsible for this seems to have learned their lesson, as I don't believe Bando Namcai ever tried to push a similarly bastardized version of an old classic since. Gosh, can you imagine though a world where it's commonplace to take a full console game from from like 20 or more years ago and just stuff it full of microtransactions and amp up the difficulty to try to make people use them? As for the developers who left during the debacle of the original version's development, they made their own company, Tri-Ace, and went on to make quite a number of games, most prominently the Star Ocean series, which they published with the help of Enix and later Square-Enix (who are often miscredited as the developers). The first game in the series was very similar to Tales of Phantasia in many regards, and also like Tales of Phantasia, they weren't able to do everything they wanted to do, this time though becuase they ran out of space on the Super Famicom cartridge, and had to cut a ton of what they originally planned to make a game that fits, leading to a final act that is extremely short and feels extremely rushed and underdeveloped. Even so, like Tales of Phantasia, it was still successful enough to start a franchise that, while not nearly as big or as successful as Tales, has managed to survive to the present day. There doesn't seem to be any bad blood between Tri-Ace and the company they split off from nowadays, if the crossover events that Tales and Star Ocean had in their respective mobile games a few years back are anything to go by.

Same with Panzer Dragoon Saga, all they have to do is ask ANYONE who has a copy of the game, emulate it, do some twerks, and BOOM, you have a port of Panzer Dragoon Saga. That’s just my theory, if there’s more to it, then I understand why it can’t be done.

Hey @MattMcMuscles, just wanna put in a request for a Medievil What Happened? -- Partially because I love the old Medievil PS1 games and there seems to be an interesting story about a cancelled PS2 sequel, and partially because I still hope Sony returns to the series. Sir Dan returned for a brief cameo in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and more recently the remake came out, but I wonder if a proper return to Gallowmere is in the works, and I think no one can get to the bottom of it better than you.

I am convinced that Sega intentionally sets themselves up for failure. Sonic Mania was the shart of hope I had for a decent Sonic game. It delivered on all fronts! Sega couldn’t do the right thing and make a follow up or even brand new Sonic game with Taxman. Instead we got Forces, Frontiers, Origins and All-Stars. FFS.
