Thank you for watching! Did Ronnie have what it takes to be the strongest man in the world or is there another bodybuilder you think could do better?

A competitor for sure. He was there or there abouts with his raw strength with the top guys of the time. Presuming he could have adjusted to the requirements of the sport. Not sure about winning the title though!

Very few people understand how impressive Ronnie's lifts were for his time. Hooper couldn't even get through Ronnie's back workout. When you look at physique and strength combined. Ronnie is in my opinion the all time King of the Gym. And yes I think Ronnie could':÷ challenged for the 2001 WSM title if he trained and dieted for it. I still think Svend would win because Ronnie would probably struggle with arm-over-arm. (Bodybuilders usually have weak grip because of the high training volume)

Yeah Ronnie is a very impressive athlete, with a few years of Strongman specific training I imagine his grip strength could have improved a lot

Ronnie Coleman shall always be the King of Bodybuilding. I'm sure he could have podiumed or even won, if he pursued Strongman in late 90s or early 2000s. Great video Matt!

He could have won 100%. If he trained for strongman and had at least a Mariusz level of bodyfat. At 5% bodyfat, never specifically training for strength or peaking, his numbers were rivaling the WSM competitors.

@@MattRhodesSport I'm not convinced that is true. For instance, in my entire life so far, I've only met THREE guys that I think match up to a typical WSM competitor. Giant fellas, naturaly strong without even ever lifting weights. I know there is the odd outlyer such as Abs Wolder etc who didn't conform to the usual strongman bodytype but relied on speed and power instead. But for the most part... First was a childhood friend of mine named Kristian. He was only 5'8" but an absolute monster of a guy, 16 stone natural weight and barrel chested with massive thighs. He fluctuated between 16-20 stone (always went on a diet and ran miles once he hit that upper limit) but I remember the FIRST time we ever trained together, his first time ever lifting weights, he was benching 115kg for reps of 6.... this made it impossible and silly for us to train together, my max was 60kg reps and there was no way I could spot him with anything above 80kg. So we didn't train much going forward. Another guy was called "Gibbo" and he was a mechanic that was in the Hells Angels (UK). He would fix bus engines etc and, on his break times, he'd sit in the sun on this reinforced chair, his legs spread due to his insane thighs, and smoke and we would talk about bikes etc. He was probably upwards of 21 stone an absolute giant of a man. I saw him tip a standard blue barrel full of degreaser over like it was a kettle, pouring some into a bucket, and then right the barrel again.... Last was a guy named Tim Dooley, a plumber who I worked with long time ago back in the early 2000's. Another giant around 6'2" but with the same bodytype / proportions of Kristian. He DID go the gym, in his youth, and I remember him installing boilers onto wall brackets BY HIMSELF and he could use an SDS drill to carve a 12" hole through double brickwork with his left hand only while having a full conversation with me. He told me once his max deadlifts and benches at the gym but I forget now. But he also had that physique of a giant, and I always wondered ... if any of these 3 guys had trained for Strongman, I'm sure they'd be competing at least at British level, if not at worlds. But guys like this are very rare.

@@TheVanillatech im not trying to start an argument or anything but you just named 3 people you alone have known that you think could be strongmen. If everyone knew 3 people thats a lot of strongmen! regardless of the overlap haha i think the mindset is more rare than the actual frame and ability. its actually like that with most things i think. there's a lot of people that "could" be world class pianists for example; if they somehow wanted to play piano for 10 hours a day their entire lives everybody wanna be a bodybuilder but no one wants to lift no heavy ass weights!

@@humanbean3 Well I'm 45 years old (today) and in my ENTIRE life, only met three. Met HUNDREDS of bouncers, big lads etc. But none of them have that insane natural strength or mass except those THREE. I'd say thats rare. That means that roughly 0.005% of people, or whatever? And everyone on earth is only 7 people away from knowing everyone else on the planet. The fact that I've met 3 people who could have potentially been WSM contestants doesn't mean every single person knows THREE OTHER guys who could be the same. And true, mindset is very important. But it doesn't matter how strong your mindset is ... without the genetics you have zero chance in hell of ever getting to that elite level of athletics. Doesn't matter how much juice you take or how many hours you live in the gym.
