Studios care about the abilities you have and what you can do, not what program you use and that's why they don't mind training someone for a few weeks in a program they don't know if they can deliver high quality products.

Blender is also not any "we give you our software for free because we love artists you guys!" miracle, I hope that nobody is stupid enough to fall for that bullshit. The budget of these programs is in fact quite similar lately, and where the Blender is getting the money from is very different from Autodesk marketing policies. Blender is the ultimate software that gives you one thing that no other 3d software give. The ability to make A COMPLETE product in it. Entire short film can be made in it. But still as a blender user I know about tools blender lack and there are a lot of features still missing in it, but still, in most cases you can find workarounds. Yes, you will loose time dealing with missing features searching for solutions, and this is what you pay for free software - time. The ability to make a complete product in it is worth nothing if the tools are abysmal. Following that concept is what held Blender back for years, a generalist software that tries to do anything is always much worse than a bunch of specialized tools. Jack of all trades, master of none. And if you talk a bout time - people always underestimate what its worth. My main issue with Blender isn't the software itself, it's the fact that most tutorials for it - which are almost all geared toward absolute beginner modelers - teach newbies to be over-reliant on modifiers like the subsurf. To be clear, those are incredibly powerful tools, but they're not a substitute for having good hard surface topology in place. I started with Blender (back in like the 2.4 days) and I struggled for years to figure out why my meshes all looked so blobby and poorly-defined. Wasn't until I switched to Maya for school that I figured out the reason was because I was modeling WAY too low-poly and trying to rely on the subsurf modifier to create far too much of my geometry, because that's how I had been taught to work. Once I actually had to start defining where my polys went, my models started looking infinitely better.

On the other hand, Blender's catching up. The 2.8 release has attracted a lot of new 3D modelers, as well as veterans. Epic Games and Ubisoft took notice, giving the Blender team huge grants, and the Japanese anime studio Khara has made the switch to Blender. With the sudden influx of users, the big community of tutorial channels for beginners and intermediates, and being noticed by game and animation companies means that not only is Blender catching up, more and more studios are likely to make the switch. i wanna point out that the mentioned sculpting and boolean features are very likley to not be used in big productions. Every 3D software has sculpting features now a days but that does not mean they are better than ZBrush / Mudbox / 3DCoat those tool are highly optimized only for sculpting and therefor will be used in production because of that. Also Booleans are usually a big no no, as for movie productions everything needs to be subdivided and using booleans usually costs you more time in cleaning up your mesh afterwards than modeling it by hand in the first place. Also the renderengine, for studios it is mostly interesting how customizeable it is. for example how easy is it to create custom aov's or custom shaders. So far in every single production i worked on i needed to generate custom aov's and arnold or renderman or mantra provide you amazing toolsets to set them up for example. I don't say cycles does not, i never worked with cycles, i just wanna again point out that studios care a lot about the efficiency of a tool. On some productions we needed to write our own hair shader or did setup a prodcution wide default shader for most surfaces, this is the important part for studio productions, how flexible is the tool to be able to fit it into the pipeline. I also kinda disagree on the animation part, i think every tool has the rigging and animation capabilities that maya have, the only reason is as you mentioned that people are used to it and it is the software which get's teached in schools. about a Year ago we wanted to try to switch to blender because honestly maya overall is a pretty shitty tool actually because is has more bugs and poorly implemented features than any other software. But we were not able to find enough artists for blender so we are still forced to stick with maya. Overall for our studio the reason why blender is so attractive is because of its API and the fact that you can customize everything. Because besides maya and houdini no other software on the market really allows you to go into it very deep and access or manipulate core mechanics as you need it.

absolutely agree, I work for a company which uses Blender instead of Maya for 6 months now. blender can't handle basic things, world space transforms are broken, undo takes forever on big scenes, the knife tool creates extra vertices randomly, visibility in the viewport is a general pain on big sets. Python scripts from 2.79 don't work in 2.8, which had our TDs rework all the pipeline scripts and the list goes on and on and on. In my experience the only people who think Blender is generally better than other packages are those who haven't worked with other packages long enough, those who don't have to work on complex scenes or those who have just started learning 3D. I'm using the best tool for a certain job and that is not always Maya, but Blender fanboys seem to have this need to prove to the world that Blender is better in everything no matter what.

Blender has a lot of capabilities but so many times you are forced to make extremely complicated systems compared to Maya. I always found blender's way of organizing things a bit confusing. Like the constraints stack that is disjointed from your scene outline and things like that. So many times things that are made easy in Maya, things like stretches or ribbons for example, are just not worth the time to do it in blender. Just export the obj and do it in another software

Everything in blender is shinier but once you look past the surface, it's pretty inefficient and straight up unusable in a big production setting. Animating in blender is a giant pain in the ass, and rigging is terrible, thus people gravitate towards add on's that solve issues, but are not really sustainable on a big scale. And people complaint about Maya's stability as if it's crashing all the time. I work with Maya everyday all day, and have been for the last 15+ years, and it's nowhere as unstable as people are making it up to be. Does it crash? yes, of course. But I might get a crash every couple of weeks, sometimes none in months. Does blender crash? Yes. It's crashed on me multiple times following tutorials. Most of these blender fanboys are young guys who are going into 3d for the first time and benefit from blender allowing them to do contained scenes with a renderer that gives them decent looking output without much effort, but they end up doing things and having workflows that would get you laughed out of any studio. Blender is pretty great, specially for a free software, but this constant need to be shitting on other software to prop up theirs is super tiring and just cultish.

I was thinking of switching to Blender since its free and more affordable for an indie developer; however, switching to Blender would mean relying on other external software for retopologizing (like Topogun |which costs |$100) and UV unwrapping (like RizomUV which costs~$150), the combination of which would be more expensive than a MayaLT license (let alone giving away Maya's powerful rigging and animation tools). All other stuff don't really matter e.g. particles, physics, materials, rendering..etc since I use UE4 P.S. I already have Zbrush & substance painter perpetual licenses (however, I am relying now more on Quixel Megascans within UE4 which are superb and FREE)

MEL is a trivial language to learn. I noticed the reviewer skipped over it, but it is extremely powerful. One thing they didn’t point out is that the problem with GPL programs is it is nigh impossible to write anything that integrates into it without it becoming GPL’ed as well. That’s great for the hobbyist, not so great for a company who likes it’s IP. Again, this is another point for Maya. If you love Blender, by all means, use Blender. I wouldn’t argue that you made the wrong choice. If you love Maya, by all means, use Maya. I wouldn’t argue that you made the wrong choice. But, please, do not tell me that it’s a “great choice because XYZ studio uses it” - that is the Appeal to Authority Fallacy and doesn’t bear out.

Really appreciate all the work and effort you put into this video man. As someone who worked in Maya for a while and now not being able to afford it, I was really unsure if Blender was worth trying but I can definitely see now that there's waaay more to it than I thought. I'm genuinely excited to learn it now lol. And of course it being free is the biggest plus, especially since I'm not losing much in terms of necessities.

It's not only free, it's way more fun to me to model than in 3dsmax. Also it feels good because theoretically you could do everything in blender without any 3rd party software.
@infiltradooo4 жыл бұрын
I am a generalist in 3d, I have used both but I have to say that maya is a more powerful software, starting with its render engine, Arnold, Arnold is used for cinematographic films like gravity, the avengers, to give examples, Blender is free and at Being free does not have a good technical support so if something serious happens to you with the program you have to find them, instead Autodeskt has a technical support that responds in 24 hours, if you have any problem with the software and that is very important. But saying this does not mean that blender is bad, blender is an evolving software, and it has powerful tools such as digital sculpting that despite not having the power of zbrush can achieve the same result if you are a good artist. The conclusion is: If you have a study of vfx, videogames etc ... you have to have the support of these companies since it is money that is lost when something is not resolved quickly, but if you are a freelance the choice is yours and it gives Just like software you use, because any 3d software exports in fbx or obj.

Reasons not to use maya: Autodesk. A company that's too big to fail, will shit on a plate, call it a new feature and empty the wallets of small studios who think the only way to "stand out" is to use maya. Regardless of how good the software is the company is so fucking dubious it's honestly mind boggling that people would want to give them money. But yeah, to answer the question of which is better, using the cracked version of maya to model and rig and then importing into blender to make it look like you didn't use maya in the first place is by far the best workflow :-).

@503 Workshop That's not true. Arnold has been recently integrated into Maya. There are some features, like batch rendering, that are not available without purchasing it. Otherwise, it is fully functional and can be used as a regular renderer. Remember, you're dealing with commercial software. The software and pricing are not designed with "consumers" in mind. You're essentially paying for stable software and actual support. Many studios would probably use a different renderer anyway.

As a Blender user and former Maya/cinema 4D user: Maya "wins". Anyone who has worked in the industry will tell that: Maya-Max for 3D Model along with Zbrush (maybe), For your projects whatever you want. Blender is great and I think in some years will be main stage for sculpting and modeling-hard surface modeling but for now I don't think it comes closer to Maya/Max in terms of production and that's why when you have a problem working on a film for ex, Max/Maya will instantly solve the issue cause they have more room to do that and Blender still is a child. Should we have to talk about the crashes in a production? It happens more than often in Blender and we all know it. It's like when you want to compare Houdini with X-Particles. The last is great but can't win in a competition versus SideFX, simple as that. I'm talking in a production professional scheme planning. My case, Blender everytime I can, in love with procedural and Eevee, in love with the tons of plugins you have for Blender and I think it will become a beast as more people start doing big things like Ian's is doing. Just my two cents.

Modeling... 1. You can model in Maya with NURBS, which are still best among 3D animation software, fully integrated into the pipeline. 2. You have paint effects, which are unique modeling/animation tool you have nowhere else. 3. Subdivision surfaces, which you don't have in blender. No, the subds modifier is not the same as modeling with fully supported modeling in Subds. 4. MASH. 5. Fluids, including 3D fractals. 6. Bifrost. 7. Various plugins over the years, free and commercial ones, hardmash for example, mainframe sets and boolean tools, etc. Main point with scupting is number of polygons. If you have a lot of polygons and you want to sculpt, there is a separate tools like mudbox (which usually you got with maya subscriptions), Zbrush, 3D Coat, Sculptris. There is no coincidence that Zbrush is standard for sculpting due to it's superb performance and range of tools. BTW you also have plugins for sculpting for maya, some of which work nicely with animation as well. So which one is better at sculpting ? Zbrush.

Maya may be "industry standard" but "industry standard" based on one single paid software is the corporate shit we should never have to deal with. One software should never hold a monopoly on a profession as wide as 3D graphics. Blender and every other alternative should be promoted to fill the gap wherever studios decide to go with new, performant, flexible, open source / free routes. Not saying Maya is bad, but having no alternative when entering an industry is never EVER healthy for said industry. There's tons of examples of this from other industries as well such as web dev, ui design, game dev etc.

Another question here. That is almost about scene optimization, especially in games. I may be wrong in some cases but as I figured it out by myself there is a difference methods of creating different shapes of objects which using different algorithms resulting in different number of polygons. And as far as I know Maya in this case is more superior comparing to Blender. So my question here: - Is this correct?
@julius7506 Жыл бұрын
Well both softwares have complex algorithms working in the back to create stuffs, while user only see the ui, tools and windows. Same as how OS works. But when creating shapes and complex scenes, all modeling softwares give you full control over number of polygons you need. So you can create, let's say a ball, using 20 polygons to 200 million polygons, in both softwares. It's all upto you. Therefore, one can't compare based on number of polygons used. Though you can compare based on tools and features, ease of use, efficiency, workflow, ability to handle large scenes, rendering speed and quality. And pricing.

I've been happily using Blender for animation and pretty much everything else. Had to use Maya since it's a pre-requisite for my animation school and ultimately my animation career. I can confidently say, when it comes to animation, Blender has more and better native tools. And it is 10x more stable than Maya. Maya crashes for the lamest reasons. But Maya has that awesome - and pricey - addon, Animbot. It's really badass. But nothing more to brag about. Maya is based off codes in the 90s, no fixes for bugs, no improvements at the modeling workflow front, lacks a powerful stacking system like that of Blender. Well, basically when it comes to modeling in general Maya is a lame joke. The only area i could deem Maya superior over Blender is rigging only. Blender has a long way to go with rigging i believe. Cycles X is coming up to kick Arnold's ass pretty soon btw.. Installing plug-ins in Maya is often cumbersome, and sometimes it's downright daunting. You also need to restart after installing plugins, and the may and may not work. Wheres in Blender, it is literally two clicks, you do not need to restart for 99% of the addons I've used so far. You can also enable and disable them real time in Blender's viewport. The Blender system saves your preferences in a much efficient way. I like however how Maya sets up projects creating folders for your source images and required files. All in all, I would say that what keeps Maya in the market is the huge risk of switching. And this is not to say that Blender is the immediate replacement. Houdini is the VFX boss for now. C4D and Modo are powerful too. Zbrush shall remain the sculpting king for years to come. But the upcoming Blender 3.0 with its anticipated enhanced geometry node (and entire Everything Node project) is gonna be crazy. Yes we need Maya to survive in the industry, not to enjoy the industry.

Maya is definitely superior for draining your bank account. The question to ask is if the amount you have to pay is worth it for what you need to do. It very much possible that what you need to do can be done using Blender. Not everyone needs or wants to "get into the industry" or finds simply having software being called "industry standard" sufficient to meet what they specifically need.

Hi, I thinking to start designing so I am looking to choose an app. Can you please share your thoughts and tell me more what was blender and how it is catching with industry soon as many claim? Which one do you suggest and why? Thanks

Jeremy Perry Well in big productions Bifrost is shit when Houdini is available. Blender’s new Mantaflow is a lot less demanding on the specs, and its easier to understand and control when compared to Bifrost

I tried both Blender : it's better for your mini (or) major business , it's best for your passion , habbit and else Maya : it's for you interest on industrial development of your future (or) major studios , movie making and else

I got into the industry without my Maya experience, I think anyone can, most professionals couldnt give two toffees about what you use, as long as you use it well and fast

after reading a few comments I wanna say only 1 thing before becoming an industry-standard blender must "at least " fix 15 sec "undo" xD . Funny to read comments of people who have no idea about the reality of 3d world :) P.s I'm not a hater of the blender ! but I really hate people who say something about future of blender without personal experiences in industry

Exactly! I think 'most' blender user are students. Most Maya users are working professionals who have to earn money and pay the rent. If you're busy with serious work, you won't be hanging out and waste you time arguing to Blender fanatics. Don't get me wrong. Blender is a nice free software but most people (or kids) using it are plain annoying and have this immature attitude.

I tried using Blender sometime last 2019. It has a weird interface and workflow: it’s like using Lightwave3d. I primarily use Maya and 3ds max although I know how to use Softimage|XSI and Cinema4D. I’m not an expert in Blender but here are the things I find weird in Blender3d: 1. You started with a box on the viewport that you’d delete 99% anyways. Any tutorial on YT starts with deleteing the box at the center. 2. The camera. There is no dedicated camera view. You can’t animate a camera while viewing at it. There’s no camera target. You have to make one through constraint. You look through the camera and then when you move the mouse, you’re out of the camera! 3. Primitive objects: You have one shot at dialing the parameters for a primitive then after that it’s gone. 4. Weird/poor spline tools. Blender spine created looks like a centipede. 5. Poor text tool/logo creation toolset. Importing SGV files and extruding them is too painful: all polygons become triangles! If Blender developers will improve this aspect of modeling, then it could be very useful in motion graphics. Right now it’s not there yet. For me Blender’s interface looks like Cinema 4D but behaves like Lighwave 3D. Blender tries to be ‘different’ which I find counter intuitive. What I like about it is that it’s FREE. Kudos to the developers who voluntarity work on this software. They just have to listen to users and make it easier to use. Comparing it to Maya? Haha! Can’t compare them. Maya is a very matured software. Right now, I think Blender is good 3d software for hobbyists.

third observation is accurate, am using maya daily and compared to blender, for sure maya is way ahead than blender, easier and streight forward workflow

Let me help you here buddy, 1. Delete the default cube and safe the startup file, boom no default cube from next time 2. Press N and lock the camera to view, boom done, now ur camera moves along the view 3. If u press something else and ur primitive settings r gone, select ur primitive object press f9, boom primitive settings r back 4. Ur personal opinion, cant help it 5. Blender z actually weak in motion graphics, hope devs update the tools over time Treat blender like maya, and not like a free software which u opened up the first time, got frustrated with it and left it, every software needs time to learn it properly

I feel like some people judge blender because it's free, and therefore the have a thought in the back of their mind that it's bad. Blender is an extremely powerful tool, and while it does this differently than other softwares, you should still give it a chance and learn it.

At this point its pretty much down to preference, blender can rival any industry standard software. its all down to the artist.

F*k not, how can an open source beat a closed professional market?
