Great review and I respect the perspectives, but not all of us are suburban drivers. The CX-30 is much more practical for me as a mountain dweller, with added clearance and capability over mild off-road situations. And being over 50 now, the ease of enering and exiting a CUV is much more comfortable than a hatch, and that shold also be attractive to anyone on the run around town. One of my latest vehicles was a 3-series sedan, and the low entry/exit position was annoying for a 200 lb guy like me.

I just sold a stinger and bought one.I also like sitting up high and this thing is a very good car all the way around.With AWD you can easily go fast in twisties easier then other cars.I will shoot a video on a long bender that i test my cars on--I tied a Civic Type R's speed of 60 miles per hour (In my CX-30)on this particular sweeper near my house(it is a 30 mph long sweeper and I go about 90% of what a vehicle can handle--tight on the edge of the tires squealing--or safety systems going off)I was able to do 70 mph on this same sweeper in my stinger--which also had AWD.I was also able to go 70 in an X6M comp--but only 65 in a new camaro SS.With bigger tires I think this CX-30 is just as capable as a Type R for canyon carving--and you can definetly drive it easier and faster then lesser cars or cars with just FWD or RWD.

Take this Into consideration: living in NYC is like driving off road half the time. The roads are always being dug up for water line and electric and sewer repairs. The roads are patched up everywhere and the cold winters make potholes everywhere. The short CX30 is great for tight spots, and the bigger suspension and ground clearance are great for NYC roads. Sedans get destroyed here. Just bought the CX30 and I love it

I switched from '19 NA Mazda3 HB to '21 CX-30 Turbo and it's way more powerful, better to handle, more comfortable and quiet, and easier to get in and out than the Mazda3. I don't go off-road as much but I feel like I made the right choice.

Man I am in this same situation, have a 19 manual 3 Hatch but want more power and slightly more space. Trying to decide between the CX-30 turbo, the Kona N or the Golf Alltrack. How is your MPG been? Is there any more usable space compared to the 3?

@@AveryPlaysBass i’ve had the turbo for over 2 months, and MPG it’s not that bad. in a bumper to bumper traffic (20min commute that takes 30-40min with traffic) i’m averaging 19-22 mpg. if i’m not blasting the throttle at an “empty” lane, i average 22mpg most of the time. also take into consideration that i also have a Cold Air Intake. so it’s not that bad.

Just ran across this CX-30 review. One of the best discussions about this car on YT. We just test drove the Crosstrek, Seltos and CX-30, and ordered the CX-30 Carbon Edition. While the turbo is excellent, I never felt like the 2.5L i4 lacked maneuvering in and out of traffic on the interstate or in a busy city. The plastic cladding, I'm appreciative of - and a big reason we purchased this car is for my long 4, 5 and 6 hour roadtrips to the Northwoods for a canoe/fishing. So yes. It's going to be a canoe hauler. And many of the roads I'll be taking will be dirt two-tracks and gravel roads to the more remote lakes. Which is also a benefit of the higher ground clearance than the Mazda 3 and the Seltos. Crosstrek bests the Mazda by half an inch here. Why did we choose this over the Crosstrek? ...being on the road upwards of 6 hours, I want to ride in comfort. The Surbaru is a great car. But it just felt to utilitarian on the inside, especially compared to the CX-30. The Seltos? It looked and felt like a toy with molded textured plastic. As for body roll? We took all of these vehicles on an interstate cloverleaf on-ramp, and the CX-30 felt more taut than the Crosstrek (or on par), and much more taut than the CX-5 and Seltos. We didn't need it to feel like the Mazda 3. It just had to feel better than the CX-5, which it does in spades. The CX-30 dug in on those left tires, and hugged the road as we accelerated around the turn to enter I-94. The CX-5 rolled a LOT, and we had to let off the gas. Same with the Seltos, and a bit with the Crosstrek. The Crosstrek and the CX-30 felt pretty close here. ...the flier, here, is the Kia Niro. That thing really hugged the road on that ramp as well. But it had wicked amounts of molded plastic. ...otherwise, I'd take the Niro over the Seltos any day. ...but not the CX-30. Regarding size, cargo space and hauling kids/rear passenger space? This will be our second car. We have a Honda Pilot to haul the family around. Which brings me to the secondary use. The CX-30 will also be used for driving to and from work, with much better gas mileage in town than the Honda Pilot. The CX-30 seems to be the prefect blend of Mazda 3 on-road fun, with small SUV off-road fun. It's like Mazda built the perfect car with the CX-30. They nailed this car. YMMV. :)

It always amazes me when car reviews are so out of touch with what most people are looking for in a car. The ease of entry/exit, increased ground clearance, and larger hatch opening all put this car in a different league of practicality over the 3. And it’s hard for me to fathom that car reviewers who love to make the “off-roading in the drive through/parking lot” jokes are so oblivious to the millions of people who drive to hiking trails, ski resorts, and campsites regularly - all places where the 3’s ground clearance might legitimately struggle. The whole “why does this exist when you can buy a hatchback” argument probably sounded a lot like “why does the hot hatch exist when you can buy the sports sedan” back in the day
@JanMichaelFranklin

Answer to rant: In addition to what Paul said, the lift and slightly more compliant suspension is just a better match to certain environments. The only reason I picked the 3 hatch with a manual over the 30 is because I am a die hard enthusiast. I live in urban Ohio and the streets here are just shit. The average buyer would never pick the 3 over the 30 in this environment and I can't blame them.

Thank you for your analysis. I would point out, however, that in Canada, an SUV is not just a question of sitting position. A higher vehicle is more comfortable in the snow, and is better positioned to withstand road abrasives (higher hood and bumper). In addition, greater suspension travel is better suited to our roads, which are sometimes damaged by periods of freezing and thawing.

Traffic Jam Assist is (besides the engine) the absolute best feature on this car. Spend any amount of time in traffic with it and I don't know how you can come to another conclusion. The ability to not have to constantly take your foot on and off the pedal as you INCH your way through traffic for an hour is so incredibly useful. My blood pressure goes down, I don't worry about the jerks slipping in and out of lanes, I just get in the middle lane and hit the cruise control. Amazing.

It makes you wonder what world these guys live in ... it's like every destination to which they travel is lined with a race track HOV lane. Makes me want to grab them and say, 'Yeah, I f'ing definitely want to sit higher. I want to just get out the car instead of getting UP out the car.' They want every car to be a race car just because it says turbo. Guess that's why they don't have that many subscribers. If you seen them on TV, they pretty much review the cars only the top 20% are going to be driving and when it gets to the other 80, they have no clue what they want need or like. In my head, I can honestly hear them jeering ... pffftt that's for the lower 80%r's.

Honestly, I just bought a 2021 Turbo CX-30 and I absolutely LOVE it. I test drove a manual mazda 3 hatch and I did enjoy it and it was a great car, but getting in and out was not very enjoyable (this coming from a 5'8 165lb dude). Being a little bit older I also wanted a car I could grow into with my life with a little bit more space for future kids or whatever is thrown my way. In terms of styling I love the big plastic body cladding but I understand why other don't like it, It looks beautiful in white and the soul red (mine). Overall I just bought this car for a fast fun car when I decide to use it that .1% of the time and for the other 99.9% be comfortable, spacious and premium feel.

My wife and I recently purchased one of these (A Black CX-30 Turbo) - she was shopping for a subcompact SUV and this was the one our heart gravitated to. Reason she wanted a subcompact SUV like this was because of the higher ground clearance which makes it easier to see out of, better clearance over snow, more compliant over potholes and rougher roads in the northeast, AWD, and trunk space. She genuinely did not want an SUV like a RAV4 or CX5 because she thought they were too big for her needs (we are a DINK couple) and are harder to park in the city. The fact that the power on this blows the competition (like the Toyota C-HR and Honda HR-V and Nissan Rogue Sport which we also considered) out of the water and the interior and exterior look arguably better than what she was cross shopping with sealed the deal. This is our first mazda and we are really looking forward to it. I know the Mazda 3 Turbo HB might be the "enthusiast" choice, but for non-enthusiasts this is a great option, and for our needs, I'm glad mazda offered this. On top of that the HB is quite rare to find so it makes it harder to purchase one.

Being a Mazda guy who owns a CX-5 and has wanted a Mazda 3 hatchback for a long time, it seems the CX-30 (ugh) is the next best step down in one's bid to simplify, downsize and reduce (if that's important). A wonderful empty-nester car for road trips with the wife to see the great and good expanses of the American landscape. Nice thing is this, either way, CX-5, CX-30 or Mazda 3 (all with turbos)...the way they're going right now, there isn't a bad choice to make and, in the end, maybe that is what makes it so tough, to choose the best one when they're all so good. A bedeviled and enviable position.

All these people with no idea why anyone wants ground clearance - where the hell do you live that they so immaculately care for the roads? Are we all supposed to move there? Nearly every large city's downtown road system in my region is regularly worse than the farmland/hills on the outskirts. Privilege is the cause of the confusion behind the CUV/SUV craze, its quite obvious at this point. They're popular because 80% of Americans agree that risking damage to your car even as rarely as a few times a year is enough to instead purchase the taller option.

I bought a 30 when initially was looking at a 3 hatch. I went with the 30 cuz the 3 hatch had abysmal rear visibility, i felt as if i was sitting on the ground looking out thru a tank turret. The 30 sits a tad higher with better visibility in all directions and i do not need to be a contortionist to get in and out of. I do not notice any cargo capacity diff between the two (i never use the back seats ). After driving the two, the 30 suits my needs better and is more practical.

For me on why I went with the cx 30 turbo over 3 sport turbo isn’t the leg room as much as the cabin height. I couldn’t get my car seats to fit the height of the 3 sport turbo, yet they fit fine in the cx 30 turbo. Easier to load them into as well.

I just wanted to add that I'm planning on getting a cx-30 over the 3 specifically for the ride height. I commute about an hour in a snowy area. I don't need the interior space and I don't go off roading, but....snow freezes in certain areas and it's often high. It's not uncommon that I have to just power over fairly high mounds of frozen snow that scrapes along the bottom of my car.

My wife and I went to the Mazda dealership today to look at both the 3 hatch and this CX-30. We knew ahead of time that they didn't have any turbo models of either (which is what we want), but I wanted her to at least see the cars in person and sit in them both to see which she preferred. I really thought she'd go for the 3, but she actually liked the 30 better. It was easier for her to get in and out of, and she actually preferred the look of the 30 over the 3. She actually wants the additional ride height, as in the winter when she leaves for work a lot of times our driveway and neighborhood hasn't been plowed yet, so she finds herself pushing her way through with her current car (2019 Subaru Legacy 3.6). It's just the two of us, and backseats will never be used for any more than cargo, so the lack of rear seat room is a moot point. And she also doesn't want a sport-car like ride and handling, just a really nice driving/riding car with some power, so this will be perfect for her. We came home and built out exactly what she wants on Mazda's site, and we'll be talking to our salesperson next week to get the ball rolling. The lease on her current car isn't up until the beginning of February in 2022, but with the way the market is now as far as getting cars (for example, Mazda right now isn't taking customer orders), we want to get out ahead of this to make sure she gets exactly the spec and options she wants.

Only 185HP with noisy torque coming much later! No way. We live in Canada, not California. The Mazda 6 would scrape its way to the street through the snow in our 5 month long winter. CX30 Turbo is the answer.

Being minimal isn't a bad thing for some of us. Far too many vehicles today are too busy with too many distractions with information screens and touch screens to access what should be simple functions, it's refreshing to see simple easy to identify and use buttons and knobs. It seems the only things I really want are simple steering wheel mounted audio controls and easily to reach those functions I don't often access but also don't care to have to gaze at a touchscreen while I identify the "buttons" I need to push. I miss the vehicles I've had which didn't require me to take my eyes off of the road to find controls and adjust them. This looks to be the closest vehicle to those "good old days" on a fully functional system of today. Nice work Mazda!

Is it so hard to understand that many people live around and frequently use roads that are in conditions that bottom out and scrape up the fronts of any sedan under 5"? Seems like the enthusiast community has no room for people that can't afford both a sport car and one that they can use without anxiety any time they approach roads with unavoidable deep imperfections that cover half the roads in some of the sections of the midwest.

I appreciate the positions taken against the CX30, but would also add that it's not just there as a place holder in the showroom, but perhaps for those like myself that would not be comfortable falling down into or having to climb out of the 3, due to back issues, but would love something with a similar character with a higher seating position to aid ingress/egress and higher ground clearance for traversing winter road conditions.

Good review, but you didn't cover one area that is important to most people considering a "CUV"...the cargo area. You talked about the back seats and how they have slightly less space than those on the Mazda 3 hatchback, but didn't mention how the cargo areas on those 2 vehicles compare. Being that under the skin they're practically the same, I would think that the CX-30's loss in back seat space would translate to a small gain in cargo space. Is this right? Also, and completely off topic, but at the beginning of the vid you complained about a truck jumping out in front of you. Have a little sympathy for semi truck drivers. A fully loaded semi truck weighs as much as 80,000lbs. That means that they're going to accelerate very slowly. If there's even moderate traffic on a roadway, they're going to have to just go for it and count on other drivers having enough of a sense of self preservation to let them in or go around them. Otherwise, they'd be sitting there all day waiting for a gap in traffic large enough for them jump in without "troubling" car drivers.

One thing all these reviews seem to miss when they criticize ride height is in some states such as Utah, the gutters are above ground and not buried so when you pull into parking lots or driveways you don’t have to take them at an angle like you do in the cx-3. I love the looks of the cx-3 but don’t want to deal with low ride height. I just bought the cx-30 and was driving a Prius and had to replace the front bumper twice. I’ll take a little bit of ride height any day

I think the Honda Ridgeline does 'trim's about right... The 'meat' of all models is the same: engine, transmission, suspension, etc. - Base/sport = really has everything your really need/nicely equipped. Really, this is 'mid level trim' for other brands. - RTL = Adds the nanny gear, adds leather, adds sunroof, chrome accents. The upscale stuff... - RTL-E = Adds really non-essentials like ambient lighting, the truck bed as speaker, courtesy lights, parking sensors. - About the only two things they don't get right are no power driver seat in the base cloth, and all models should get the led daytime running lights. - By contrast, look at the Ford Bronco. My god, SIX trim levels, and 12.3 million different configurations. It's a nightmare. - - Here's the way it should be: 1) pick the model. 2) pick the color. 3) base trim - all the standard stuff 4) mid trim - add in the nanny gear + upgraded interior 5) top trim - add the eccentric fancy pants stuff

People that live in areas that snow, they rave about how well the Mazda AWD system works in bad weather. Even the little CX-3 I own, people in Canada are very happy with the AWD system. You just have to put the right tires for your climate. So I don't know why these two guys cry so much about how the 30 can't or won't be used on rough driving conditions. They are so wrong. They are only judging based on their local area. Another thing, they barely talked about how great the 250 hp and 320 lbs of torque feel, and that's what people want to know about...

Love your reviews. But there are a few points I think you missed. Specifically about the non turbos. Around here, the CX30 can get you into AWD less expensively than the 3 Hatch. And I do appreciate the extra lift in deep slushy crap we get in winters here. Agree with everything else including the sublime interior and lack of rear seat legroom. Not a sports car for sure. But really nice to own.

Great review, as always. I also don’t understand the whole CUV/SUV craze. I get it if you are old and can’t bend down or if you regularly travel really bad roads, but for most people a car will be cheaper, perform better on most roads, and be more efficient. But I think like Todd ‘I’m screaming into the wind’.
@AdAce21
@AdAce21 3 жыл бұрын
usually that's correct, but not in this case. The Mazda3 turbo hatch is actually more expensive than the CX-30 turbo. Also, there's way more headroom in the back in the 30 than in the current 3 hatch. If you need to put a car seat in, or have tall siblings/family members (I have both), the CX-30 is way more practical. And that's from someone who's had two previous Mazda 3 hatchbacks. I LOVE the look of the new 3 hatchback, but the interior's too cramped now.

I live in Denver with a small one car garage. This is small enough to fit comfortably and be a great commuter vehicle. And on the weekends when I drive up mountain dirt roads or have to deal with snow the extra ground clearance is super important. I can't speak for others, but this car has it all for me. Small for my city life and a great commuter. With the ground clearance and power to handle the mountains and snow.

Sold a stinger and bought a CX-30--it gets really old sitting close to the ground and worrying if you are going to add another scuff mark to the front lip of the car each time you drive.Look at the wheelwells in this--you could probably get 245s on this and a 3 hatchback woul dnot be able to touch this on handling.

You seem to have missed the obvious. Yes the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo is a better driver car until you drive on any bad road or curb or steep driveway going to a flat road. I've owned a Mazda 3. Great car. I'll take a slightly reduced road car over a car that can't do the realities of roads and driveways everywhere it isn't flat.

The rant in the beginning sure aged well "why not a cx50 or cx90" Mazda: Makes the next gen cx5 calls it cx50 along with cx70 and cx90 coming out soon! My guess is they used to to continue selling the current gen cx3 cx5 and cx9 along side the new gen cx30 cx50 cx90 while they use the left over parts they had for the old gen and sell out.

Yeah...and I love your reviews...but no! There are huge areas of N America where folks buy Subarus and similar "light-off-road-capable" CUVs/SUVs because any sedan or ordinary hatch is going to be toast within a week on the rutted, pot-holed, rural roads that people have no choice but to use every day. I love the Mazda 3 Turbo. I want the Mazda 3 Turbo. But I'm not going to get the Mazda 3 Turbo because it would not cope with most of the roads I need to drive every day. At all! The CX-30 appeals because dynamically it's a much better car than the Crosstrek, but, in the end, it is still not a true Subaru competitor -it just doesn't have the suspension to cope with sustained, dirt-road driving - anyone would lose their teeth within the first 5 miles! The Crosstrek, however, can truly cope with those conditions day-after-day, and no one's going to lose their teeth in the process either. That's why they sell so many in large parts of N America. So no...but yeah, I agree, the CX-30 doesn't make a lot of sense, even for the Starbucks-drive-thru-speed-bump crowd (for whom it's purely an Instagram lifestyle car). They should totally get the Mazda 3.

Eh, it really isn't that uncomfortable on sustained dirt road driving, currently 6 months into ownership and I've taken it through some surprisingly nasty sections. I don't think many people buying the Crosstrek for comfort while driving harsh roads, only the ability to do so without damaging the underbody or front side. I only wish Mazda had done more on the front approach angle, but otherwise the vehicle is exactly what I've been looking for for years.

It makes a lot of sense.Some people want performance and also to not have their car scrape on roads.I just sold my Stinger and this is much less stressful then driving my Stinger because i had to be so very very careful. I paid 35k out the door and this car accelerates as fast as the subra impreza cvt and is much more offroad and performance oriented then that car.BTW non turbo subbies and the CVT ones are dogs on the HWY for passing--this Mazda.I owned a crosstour before my stinger and went on mountain vacations on unpaved snow mountain roads and had little problems and this CX-30 is not only more capable offroad--but is substantially faster in a str8 line--and def faster then any CUV unless you plan on dropping 50k or more and even then I believe this outruns the Audi Q3.

I agree wholeheartedly with “the rant”. HOWEVER, I do prefer the C pillar design of the CX30 over the Mazda 3 hatch. The current Mazda 3 may be the only car in existence that looks better in sedan form than hatchback. Also, since Mazda is so hyper-focused on design, I get the feeling they purposefully sabotaged the design of the 3 hatch in order to sell more CX’s. A C pillar does NOT need to be 3 feet wide!!

It's probably nice, but I can't see out of it, so end of story, full stop. I don't care about the CX-30 back seat, don't care about the "CX-4" nonsense, the cladding is a matter of taste and believe me, I won't care about it when I'm driving this fine vehicle, which is comfortable, refined, excellent value, fun to drive, and bloody quick.

The CX50 actually debuted less than a year after the CX30turbo was originally launched. Then the CX60 debuted this year. Within the next 18months, Mazda will debut CX90, CX80 and finally CX70 according to their global product launch schedule. So really, double digit CX model naming series will be missing only CX10, CX20 and CX40. Meanwhile, CX3 is retired from the U.S. & Canada market(that nameplate is globally still available in the form of a rebadged Yaris Cross developed+built by Toyota) and current CX9 is scheduled to be replaced directly by the CX90 within the next 6 months leaving the CX5 as the only remaining model in the single digit CX series......proving how wrong(or poorly researched) these KZbinrs were about Mazda messing up their product naming convention.

While you are correct and it all makes sense with hindsight, at the time of this review Mazda hadn’t announced a full double digit name shift plan for their SUVs. As you mentioned, this was, at the time, by itself in their lineup. Thanks for watching.
