Other good restraints to practice for veterinary purposes are positions for drawing blood. A pup’s first blood draw is not usually until 6-8 months old. Practicing the restraint before this happens is super helpful. Having them sit with their back to you and then holding their head up sometimes even holding the head up with your hand around their muzzle. For a neck draw we are looking for the head to be in a mostly natural position but the neck to be fully extended. The other is having them sit with their back to you and then putting your arm around their neck so you have control and holding their front legs at the elbow and putting pressure around their leg. The biggest struggle we have with a puppy’s first blood draw is the restraint. They just don’t know to stay still in that moment. We expect a little wiggle with the poke but if they know to stay still for the restraint it’s easier to get the draw done quickly. You vet can totally show you exactly how to restrain and they will really really appreciate it if you ask so you can train properly. There are also videos on KZbin I’m sure ❤️

I have an almost 5 month old golden retriever. He weighs 44 pounds. Quincy is a land shark and we constantly redirect. We had a poor trainer who steered us wrong so we are beginning looking for another again. So glad to find you! He’s more aggressive and excitable then the younger puppies shown. He lunges at me in play with his mouth open. His biting is softer now that he’s lost some teeth but he’s a real handful. Good video!

Thank you so much. This works. We have a puppy staying at a friend's while we wait for our new house to be finished. We visit as often as we can. He's starting to bite and growl, and none of the other training tricks, including diversion with toys and treats or exercise works. I was able to finally do this settling hold - it took some getting used to mechanically, figuring out quickly where my hands go - a few times today, and he stopped. It took several biting attempts, though, but you have to keep at it.

I have a new 12 week old Blue Heeler, and on the drive home he about turned by right arm in to hamburger - I forget to bring a chew toy with me! Once I got home with him, I started up your videos. Fortunately Maverick is very food motivated, so I started the crate training and have also gotten him to settle and not bite. When I pet him now he nice and gives me kisses (which get a YES and treat). For a negative reinforcement, I am following another Vet's recommendations of putting 10 pennies in an empty aluminum can and when Maverick is doing something I do not want him to do I tell him ,"You going to get the can!", and then shake the can HARD. They do not like that rattle sound, and they stop what they are doing instantly. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!

Having the house line on our rescue 4 month old cattle dog mix whenever she is out of her crate has been SO helpful! I tried the “You Decide” game with her, and I was surprised how quickly she learned how to earn her treat! I’ve also been teaching “wait” at every opportunity-going in or out, giving her toys, giving her food. We’ve only had her a few days and there have been huge improvements in her self control, including mouthiness.

My dog is 1.5 years old and I made the mistake by getting a second dog as she turned 1 year old! Play biting our younger dog is a huge problem! I've never found the playful biting a problem. I always thought she was having fun, she never bit hard, she liked when I tugged on her teeth...she was always in control and even when we both reached for the tennis ball in a crazy high energy play...I could feel her easing the bite pressure instantly so she wouldn't hurt me. So she must be aware that she CAN hurt me. ...I've never thought it was a dangerous behavior or a thing to warrant control. It's her tool to grab things with....as are my hands. I don't hurt her, she doesn't hurt me. (Edit: Not to disagree. My pup is an Aussie and quite smart. If there is a problem then it should be controlled. My pup just didn't need to have this behavior controlled in my opinion. But I have one dog, this channel has many. Maybe I am not seeing some other issues that can develop.)

I love your videos and feel better knowing I'm not alone! I'm having a lot of problems with my 6-month-old border collie/pit mix pup constantly watching my arms, hands, movements and misinterpreting "non-commands" into thinking it's okay to nip, wrap his teeth around my wrist, bite my feet, guard my steps and jump up toward me. How can I reroute his interest? He has a playpen, is on a short leash whenever he's out and he's very smart.

Literally woke up this a.m. feeling overwhelmed abt all the pup biting vids I had to find & watch and here you've made me a compilation! My one Q to anyone reading this has to do with collar vs. Harness. How do I pull on the harness the way the McCanns grab a collar to correct for biting? I have a shitzu-Bijon 3 mos pup and I don't think I can use a collar and tug on her lil neck like that. And when I do something similar with the harness she just turns around and keeps trying to puppy bite me.

I need to know how to remove dangerous items from my pups mouth. She loves ROCKS and is sneaky. When we taking her potty, as she has her head down, she'll grab a rock. She even keeps it in her mouth while we're going back upstairs & inside. When I go to remove the rock, she grawls and lunges to bite me. (I'm either holding down on the floor, or in my arms (in the Settled position). She grawls & lunges to bite either way. I've tried to lure her to play with a toy, and even pitched a treat on the floor (thinking she would have to drop the rock before she swallows it), but that's not worked. LOVE ALL your videos. Thanks So Much!!

LOL. Thankfully her problem is only that, she does so well with her potty train, always obeying my commands like "sit", "lay", "stop", even she could "stay" when i open the front door. After i always push her away and stop playing with her when she gets too excited, i noticed she becomes less and less bity now. She only open her mouth for a second then close it again 🤣😂

Our 9 week German Shepherd sometimes gets too rough with play or is repeatedly going for our rug on the floor instead of her toys, even when we make them as fun as possible when we're playing with her. Sometimes if redirection or a ah-ah (no), or try get her into a training session doesn't work I will put her in a collar and body hold, she absolutely hates it and starts growling. We've been holding her like this and giving her rewards and treats when she's calm before. It seems to always happen nearing night time, so I'm guessing she's just grumpy and needing a nap? We've been trying to use time outs more instead of holding her to stop her chewing/biting.. Any advice or suggestions on this?

@@SebKrause661 Actually have to say since posting this, my pup has been a lot better. Every meal time I hand feed him and hold his collar saying ‘calm’. He’s been getting a lot better. He’s still very rambunctious and if he gets too excited, the collar trick can still make him bite more, but I’ve found that if I say ‘calm’ and pet his head and then hold the collar it’s better. I'm a teen in highschool trying to raise a puppy. I am really introverted and get overwhelmed when adults treat her wrong. They play too crazy and let her jump and bite. To the adults, do you have any advice on how a teen should address you if the teen doesn't appreciate how you greet the puppy?
@karakrueger3037
@karakrueger3037 9 ай бұрын
Not sure how old your puppy is now, but to answer your question, I wouldn't let anyone besides you and the people you live with interact with her right now. It's like human babies, you don't let several people keep holding and passing a newborn back and forth. That baby will get extremely overstimulated and will be inconsolable. Same with puppies. My golden retriever is 11 weeks old today and she only interacts with me and the other 2 adults that live in the house. Partly because we would like her fully vaccinated which is about 1.5 months away before we introduce her to other pets and people (and that includes extended family). Adults should know better, but just tell them even though she doesn't look like a baby, SHE IS ONE. It takes time just like us humans to develop our emotional maturity. When puppies get super overwhelmed, trying to soothe them can take time and can be a little more challenging in that state. It's your dog at the end of the day, so what you say goes! Just because you're a teen shouldn't matter, adults especially should honor that its your dog. Even being introverted you got to remember that this little life trusts and depends on you with their whole little life so you got push your introverted fears aside and protect her. YOU GOT THIS! Good luck! ☺

I don't know if this would be trainer-approved, but for us, the most effective way to stop our puppy from biting when everything else fails is putting him in the crate. He hates to be apart from us so he'll do anything to stay out of it plus it helps him settle since restraining him ourselves sometimes only makes him even more wild. I take him out after a few minutes as long as he's not crying and he is a perfect angel afterwards

These puppies are so calm compared to mine, Mine is 9 weeks. Collar and body hold ... yeah ... not working for my vicious puppy. That makes him even worse. He won't settle. I am not yelling ... he is just not having any of it. The only thing I can do is take him out in the yard for 20 mins just to chill out. So frustrating.

Nothing seems to be helping with my puppy and the biting. Yelp/whimper makes him get crazier with the biting. Redirects with toys and food don’t help. Trying to ignore and walk away makes him bite my pants. I have had him a week and I know it takes time but are they any other tricks to try? He is about 9-10 weeks old and a Catahoula Leopard Hound (not 100 on his age he is a rescue that was abandoned)

We are in kind of the same boat with our golden retriever. She's sweet, but when she gets in the mood to bite it's difficult to get her under control. McCann makes it look so easy but none of their puppies seem as persistent as ours.

with CLH you need to be very... Corrective and clear with them. They are knuckle heads by nature and if you don't put your foot down with boundaries and expectations, they will become terrors even as young pups. Use a house line on the puppy for sure. Don't use your hands or fingers for play, always use a toy.

PLEASE HELP. ive been following your videos. trying all the techniques for biting (10week german shepherd) she's getting a bit volatile. when i try the 'settle' method, pulling her back to my side. she continues to bite me as if to get away or play or dominate me. its very new and i think with the right technique urgently put in place it can be corrected shes suddenly become quite aggressive and i think the tug play has contributed (even though she does calm down when we do that training i think its encouraged her to be rougher at other times) shes getting lots of exercise and stimulation. I think potentially its over stimulation as sometimes its right before she crashes into a nap. but also happens any time of day. she is just alot worse when tired.ive tried all the activities collar grab and everything on your channel so far but need some emergency intervention atm. what can i try? i dont have the money to sign up to your puppies essentials right now and need an urgent solution or new method i can try befire she gets completly out of control.

I have a one year old Pit/Plotty mix and a 12 week old Staffy, my one year old is a really good dog, but now that we brought the puppy home two weeks ago she's not listening, she is crate trained, and when we let the two of them go around each other it goes from 0 to 100 real fast, and doesn't come down. They play so rough and so hard but doesn't stop. Yesterday it was two and a half hours and they were panting so hard but they kept going. I wanted to see how long they would've actually played if I let them. My plott mix goes for the puppy's neck, and gets really rough. They don't bite angerly or growl or anything but the playing just will NOT stop. Any advice?

Only thing is I have a terrier puppy and he is way more wired and bitey than the usual borders, aussies and labs that I always see in these videos. If I were to grab my pup by the collar he is so small he can usually still bite no matter where my hand is. Or he will flip on the floor to get to me. What can I do for that?

My family is loving your videos and we really appreciate the content. However, we're really having an issue with our 10 week old Golden Retriever puppy. She's a sweetheart, but we're having trouble with biting. When she starts to bite, we try holding her close and asking her to settle, and then treating her if she does. However, more often than not, she wants to wiggle and fight to continue to nip our hands (that are around her collar). I know every puppy and situation is different, but it seems like we are just not having success in this area. She's very relentless when she decides she wants to nip and bite! Does anybody have any other ideas? We'll try anything!

My Aussie pup hasn't been food motivated the 2+ weeks we have had her and this is completely derailing her training and any guidance I want to give her. She shows a lot of bad behaviours and I have no good way to tell her which behaviours I like and dislike, since none of all the different treats I have tried cause any noticeable reaction with her. She'll just kind of open her mouth for the first few I'll shove in her face, but after about 10 treats stops even that... nevermind a new and exciting situation.

I'm having trouble with my 4 month Weimaraner puppy. He's very good at self control, waits until I give the go to eat his food and is generally respectful. Right now I'm having trouble with him jumping up on me and biting my legs, belly and hands when he wants attention or to play. I try ignoring him, we go hiking with him regularly. It's very frustrating because I'm bleeding from his sharp puppy teeth! Thank you!

@@mn7164 Thanks for asking! He's been a better, I think we were in the height of teething so that was really painful for him. He still growls and barks and we need to work on jumping up, but I think he's starting to get the idea that I'm not paying attention to him when he does. I also realized I was pulling my hands away because it was painful and backing up a bit so now I'm trying not to do that. Happy to report no bloody hands this week :) He's really excellent at waiting for food or treats until I say ok, sitting, laying on his bed, so I know he has the intelligence. He was probably a bit bored so I'm making more of an effort for quick breaks during my work day at home to train and play. It also sounds like there is a difficult period around 4 months for puppy training which seems to be passing now.
