I absolutely love the Gneisenau, i'm always playing like a sniper in the American battleships but that don't work in the Gneisenau so i play her like a brawler and an ambush predator. She's one of the fastest at her tier and her acceleration is great so closing in on your enemies is not a problem at all, once you're close you can absolutely blast the enemy with the guns and the torps. I kid you not she is such a troll, i citadelled an Iowa through the bow while aiming at a ship behind the Iowa😂 That's ridiculous😂 I absolutely love her, you'd think that once you get to know the ship your shooting becomes better but oh boy that's never going to happen, there's only one way to hit people with the Gneisenau, get close! real close!😂 She is an absolute unit though, fast, decent maneuverability, very good armor and a lot of health. Battleships are a bit of a tough fight, and Destroyers are even worse, but cruisers? Cruisers are no match! They can outrun you but if you're a smart captain you can anticipate their movement and mess them up real good!

I'm using Hipper with Cilliax and Jujard to increase my shells damage, figured that the shells that do hit need to hit hard. Even with Gyrating Drillbits using a speed flag, Gnisenau pushes 30kts. Plenty fast to influence the flow of battle. Going to try Ciliax also to see if it increases my survivability, but so far, love it.

This ship is one of my favorite ships in the game and has been for a very long time, and I run a full dispersion build lol! Also worth note, the Sharnhorst is my most played ship... That being said, I'm usually in a platoon, and 2 of these bad boys can wreck!

I love this ship in fact I just finished the grind to the Bismarck.I had hipper as my commander and had a full dispersion build and fell in love with it I save the ship even when I got the Bismarck.You should try a full dispersion build keep your distance and toward the middle or end of the match take the ship and go hunting for the last enemy ships and bow tank everything.Use your torps as a deterrent to charging ships and have Andrew Cunningham and Charles Madden as your inspirations believe me the ship is way better if you do all of this

Totally agree, Spartan is off the mark with this one. It can still brawl with your mentioned build and is more accurate. Yes you lose the heals but nose on slightly angled she is tough. I never had an issue with it before the armour update. It was way better than the Bismarck, not quite as good as the scharnhorst but could hold its own.

Yup horizontal armor is essentially deck armor (its laying flat, aligned horizontally)... anyways, you're also right about the playstyle, really favors a SUPER aggressive captain. But even then it's really feast or famine

I use Hipper with Ciliax and Jujard as inspirations. Going to max out my battleship commanders along with Sims to my battleship's absolutely lethal. Hipper adds so much accuracy to German ships he's a must for hitting at range. Going to try Ciliax though, you have me intrigued.

Also for German bbs it’s not exactly citadel heaven it’s just since there’s so much armor u mostly get pens u can get the same amount of damage with a regular salvo that u get with a citadel

Nice video spartan, though for your captain build I would highly recommend using the secondary range inspiration and the main gun accuracy inspiration to help with the main guns being extremely unreliable, I forgot to British captains name but the skill is called concentrated devastation. Alternatively you could use hipper as the main captain and use a full dispersion reduction build, the 380mm guns are a lot better in accuracy and scharnhorst becomes a serious nightmare with that build.

They are referring to the deck armor and I suggest a HE built with the main guns that way when you at range you can set fires then switch to ap when closer

Horizontal armor is deck armor, yes. Gneisenau's vertical (side) armor was great.

Once played Grosser Kurfurst against Gneisenau. At the first minutes i destroyed his two front main turrets , and not finished him. After couple of minutes i saw my opponent moving with his only turret towords me (by reversing). That was one of most funniest things i had seen.

I love my “ sneeze boat”. I am still surprised that others don’t realize I have torps🤷‍♂️ Had my best games in this beast. Otto captain, Hipper and AL Scharnhorst is what I am running and it’s a bit better getting rounds on target. Secondaries are pretty solid to me. Close quarters expert medals for days in this. Days I hate it, days I love it.

Of the two Scharnhorst class battleships, which do you prefer?

I take steering gear mod instead of acceleration. Find it's quick enough already and becomes much more agile, for torps and swinging rear gun round. Actually enjoy playing it, but accuracy really isn't great. 😁

I used to think the same thing, but after some good testing in my Normandie and PE Fredrich, I find that the acceleration boost has a signifigant effect on turn radius as well. I need to test this further in Gneisenau, but so far, the results seem to speak for themselves.

Scharnhorst is a great ship. 1shots cruisers and has incredibly good armour.

Hen i use this ship i really got to either stay in a group of charge for kills when u have the propulsion upgrade (jeez i hope i spelled that right) you can get going fast usually i target destroyers that are near land and when i get to close t a battleship i fire my torps in advance so they see and speed up then i turn and fire my other torps along with my guns to shoot i usually die while preforming this maneuver but usually a few seconds after they die to my torps as well

She's very pretty indeed, she looks like a monster, but a beautiful one, in her own way. The Iowa is a beautiful ship, sleek and fast looking, but the Gneisenau and the other high tier German battleships just have a kind of beauty that no other ship has.

I love this ship. I use Hipper for better accuracy. Loosing range with brawler isn’t worth it in my opinion. Use speed to cap and angle away or brawl. Now that they buffed the secondaries it’s really nice.

The main thing you need to know about German ships is inside of about 10km its is nearly impossible to citadel a German ship. You need severe plunging damage for it to happen. So is the way of the turtle back citadel.

So one game i was Playing in the Genisenau and near the end of the game i was in the game chat with a really chill British lad he was playing in a destroyer and almost killed a Bayern he rammed the Bayern but it still survived, our teammate finished him off and it was a Nagato, two destroyers and a cruiser left I made a stupid choice but it worked out, I blizkriged it killed the Nagato and heavily damaged all the other ships around me, we had cap advantage and ship advantage I lost almost all of my HP but the round ended before the destroyers and cruiser could finish me off with HE it was a great game (it was my first few games in the Genisenau) maybe next time I'll tell you how I helped my team by distracting the Lyon and another HE spamming battleship so they could finish them both off.

There is one mistake in World Of Warships and that is that they made the ship Gneisenau with 3x2 instead of 3x3 like Scharnhorst because Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are the same ships and that is why they are called brother and sister

Both were originally armed with 9 x 11 inch guns but with the intention to up-arm them to 6 x 15 inch guns once they became available, it didn't happen because the war got in the way. This is the "up-arming program" referred to in the comment. The Gneisenau in WOW is effectively the "what if" version if the up-arming had gone ahead as planned.

I think you kinda screwed up not taking the secondary booster over the plane. With the booster, you probably could have ripped apart that Leander about 2/3rds into the match.

If you want to re-fall in love with her, just do an AI battle, go all ahead full right up the middle, and be a pure tank. Love just watching my secondaries go crazy pummeling DD’s and lighting everything a’blaze while smashing BB’s and torping cruisers. After a few of those I’ll go into standard battles and tear up, she’s a blast.

I donno if the Germans got buffed really hard, but I absolutely love the Gneisenau. Ever since I switched from a secondary build to aiming systems ect. it feels wonderful. Not a sniper, but Tier for Tier it works better than the Bismarck 100%

In the pc version before all the crap we got now I would use the German ships as brawlers. In legends I think I can do that still. :) Also for the Gneisenau I use the Toros unless I need too.

Give this ship a chance with a full dispersion build. It might surprise you if you keep your shots under 15k. Dont take the lvl 4 skill to up range on commander hipper take the improved damage control you dont need the extra range. This results might surprise you

G'day Spartan. Firstly, I love your content. Secondly, and the main reason I've chosen to comment on this video (I rarely comment on vids) is that I have heard you mention a few times that German ships are referred to with a male pronoun. This is incorrect with the exception of the Bismarck. Bismark's Captain Lindeman once stated that such a powerful ship must be a "he". The crew liked the sentiment and it stuck. Apparently Hitler didn't like it to begin with but after reading what Lindeman said in his speech he allowed the male pronoun to stand. So it was a one off. Keep up the great work, I'm immensely enjoying your vids

Its crazy how every time you play a German ship RNG screws you. I am serious this does not happen to me but once in a while. I will say I play my German ships almost all the time. I also rum captain Sheer at a level 15 in mine. I know I know he is a crusier captain, but the Sharnhorst and G boat were almost heavy cruisers.

I agree on the guns for the German Tiers not good. I even had a Fiji out turn my torpedoes from 3km. If only I video to highlight that nonsense. But you have to get close in german ships, which can be a problem if the map is like ring or estuary. Though I think you were unlucky and didn't get much assistance from your team either. Normally a thing in these games.

Guess I have to go back and play her some more, but boy, I was thrilled to be out of this ship. I like the Sharnhorst, and the Tirpitz , but really disliked this ship and the Bismarck.

Personally I enjoy the gneisenau more than the Bismarck. For some reason I just perform better in it both top tier and bottom tier in games. It’s just able to take more punishment imo than the Bismarck.

Well as of right now the German battleships are some of the best in the game If you know how to play them. Love my German battleships I do better than them than most of the other ones. Consistently a 100,000 to 200,000 thousand damage.
