Touhou: Concealed the Conclusion - Phantasm Stage (No Commentary)

This is another Gensokyo.
It is not the Gensokyo that I am familiar with,
but that doesn't matter, for the old home does not exist
anywhere anymore.
I swear Danmaq just didn't want anyone to get to this stage. That's the only thing I can come up with. To unlock the Phantasm stage first you have to beat the game on normal or above with no continues. Then you have to beat the Extra stage with that shot type. Now beat the game with the other three shot types each time without using continues on normal mode. Have at least 81 different spell cards unlocked in spell practice. And then at least attempt Lunatic mode as your choice shot type. Got all that? Good, now bend over for Reimu, we're going to the Phantasm stage.
Like Yukari's stage before this the Phantasm stage can be viewed as a remix of the extra stage. However a MUCH more difficult remix at that. The enemies come at the same spots and attack in similar manners but they either shoot more bullets, faster bullets, bigger bullets, or all three.
Suika returns as the mid-boss and on one hand is tough as hell. However on the other hand you will do this stage so many times she just turns into a passing glance.
Reimu...if I had to describe this fight in one word it would be "blindsided". Cool Down wise it's the exact same logic as Suika just bigger, faster bullets. However almost every spell card she uses is similar to Suika in theme alone. The main point of it is to get you to focus all your attention on one aspect of it and then blast you with something else out of nowhere. You need VERY good peripheral vision to even hope to beat her and learn how to dodge without looking at or even near Marisa to win.
Also like Suika you will have to heavily rely on careful use of Hakurei Bombs however first Reimu's attacks aren't as wasteful as Suika's so you can't count on refiling your gauge after attacking. That means you get pretty much one shot per spell card so make it count. Secondly Reimu's attacks are MUCH more cruel than Suika's were. With Suika her 2nd, 4th, and 5th cards were the trouble ones and the rest weren't too awful bad...With Reimu the only tame ones are her 1st, 5th, and 7th. The other seven are either extremely difficult without Hakurei Bombs or all the Hakurei in the world can't help you, they are that bad...

What I find humorous about this run is that, despite how often you said it was difficult, you almost no-bombed the entire thing. That, and you used what is probably the weakest shottype (Marisa C might be a little weaker, but a lot wider). All in all, pretty sweet run

+Kid Gamer The endings and credits play at the same time, on top of that there's no real ending for beating the Phantasm stage so I cobbled together that little clip show so I'd have something to play while I gave my final thoughts on the game. This game has such an emphasis on Reimu vs Marisa I thought it'd be neat if I made a clip show of all their different battles they've had with each other starting with their most recent in Touhou 9 and going back to their first one in Touhou 2.

Since I am not a pirate, I will only download games with proper payment if necessary. Looking forward to Mystical Power Plant, the first (and so far only) Touhou game I have played.

To my knowledge it's free but Japan is weird on things like this so it's hard to tell. I'd say it's free mainly because it is not a stand alone game. It is a script that you need to run through Danmakufu to work. I view these kinda like rom hacks but for Touhou.

Don't shoot me, but that doesn't look *that* hard... Maybe it's because I'm a lunatic player? spare a look towards CtC's lunatic mode, I've heard it's on par with SA/UFO lunatic :V Though I will agree Twelve Syllable Symbols looks like complete luckshit. It don't really think it'd fit too well in StB though. Due to the way the pattern works, doesn't look like the camera would help much. Seems more like something for Impossible Spellcard instead :V Don't worry, RSS's phantasm mode is much, much easier then this. In fact RSS is very easy in general. And I mean *really* easy, a fair bit easier then even IN except on lunatic because the stages in RSS become obscene on lunatic. Even then it's only harder then IN, the easiest game on lunatic, and only arguably. Though it's arguably more due to game mechanics, similar to IN. Like I said, RSS on lunatic has some very hard stages. I could clear hard with max lives though, and I know for a fact you'll find RSS incredibly easy, to the point I recommend you try hard instead :P

Though for what it's worth I think I did make this out to seem more difficult than it really is, what in the way I end up handicapping myself (I hardly bomb and apparently Marisa-D isn't nearly as powerful as I thought) But you are right, I suppose to someone who can regularly clear lunatic runs something like this won't look too hard.

See that little bar under Marisa? When you collect Hakurei points (you get them by killing enemies and grazing bullets) it'll fill up. When full you can press C to release a Hakurei orb and pres it a second time to detonate it.

All of danmakufu lagging? That's a new one... try vpatch for danmakufu and see what happens. Failing that I'd redownload danmakufu and add your stuff in one at a time to see what you downloaded that's making it lag all to hell

If that fails your next best bet is changing your systems locale to Japanese. It varies from system to system but a quick google search should help you there.

So does it end with them living their normal lives in Gensokyo? Does everyone return?

Good question in the end it's pretty freaking confusing when you think about it too much. So Gensokyo is a dream founded by Reimu and all its inhabitants are figures of her mind. However Marisa is also similarly having the same dream. However despite both of them waking up and the supposed dream ending Suika through force of being Suika alone was able to survive the destruction of Gensokyo and eventually pull the world back to what it was. With that in mind somehow Marisa was able to return to Gensokyo perhaps with Suika's help through her pulling inhabitants back and from there Marisa was able to use Suika's ability as a lifeline of sorts to return to the real world, get Reimu, and return to Gensokyo. With that in mind we can now conclude that Gensokyo can now stand on its own, not just as a world created inside someones mind. How Marisa and Reimu freely entered and left the real world to enter the new Gensokyo is mostly unknown but when all is said and done I think I can freely say that Gensokyo now stands as a world semi-separate from the real world. In a way Gensokyo now stands as we once knew it to be.

Although "Gensokyo" really is a true dream for us since we can't really go there, unless you dream for it. Lucid Dream is what I mean, controlling your own dream subconsciously. It has its ups and downs, and I think the difficulty goes a little too far through the roof with the Phantasm stage here. But I think the biggest detractor when comparing to ZUN's games is that he tries to reference Touhou a bit _too_ much with his spells. He can make good danmaku patterns and really shines however when doing his own original stuff.
