Man so upset about this, I had written them down (bc I wanted to avoid sending different screenshots for the old versions of the cards) but then the last 2 card texts that I wrote were somehow lost and as I recited it in my head my stupid brain made me skip those last 2 VERY CRUCIAL WORDS. Not sure how many of these you plan to do this could be 20+, 30+ episodes, but I think a fun thing to do would be to show him a location at the start of the video. Just a random one. Explain how the location works and now thats going to mess with him for he rest of the video because he'll start wondering how each card benefits with the location. As the videos go on he learns more. Like at the start of this video Wakanda or Valley of the Hand could severly change how he sees these cards vs Death's Domain or Altar of Death or maybe just show him Cloning Vats and he has to decide how that works lol. Fun idea may make the videos too bloated though just pitching it. The format is great already

To be clear on the whole vanilla controversy: second dinner devs have said multiple times on Discord they do *not* balance the game around the statline of the vanilla cards, but rather what is good enough to see play. The vanilla cards mostly exist as a part of the new player experience and were designed from the get go to fall off as you unlock new cards - literally a part of the tutorial is getting you to replace Shocker with Sentinel (or at least it was). Aside from that those cards could see play with Patriot/High Evo which inflates their numbers.

That's a bad approach, and here is why. What does new player experience means, when the game in pools 1-2 is not even close to the real game? It's like let's play noob chess - just with pawns, and they cannot double move on first turn of the game. And then you hit pool 3 where everyone is playing with all pieces and you still have pawns with no double movement, with your king and may be 1 knight. New player experience, yay! About Patriot/High Evo. If Patriot was playable only with no ability cards in your deck, it should be buffed significantly. Rn Patriot is played with tokens only. High Evo is the only reason to play "bad cards". No ability cards can be buffed by ~2 power each (outside of Wasp) and that won't broke the meta. Outside of High Evo obviously, but its abilities can be tuned down then, not base stats of already bad cards.

@@IyDUA it's about training card evaluation, dude- a simple fact of TCG games is that, thanks to the cardpool, some cards will always be objectively better than others, so players need to be able to tell when one card is bad compared to another

@@IyDUA The "new player experience" is very important for on-boarding and giving them simple but weak cards that are obvious improvement points once they get better stuff helps a lot. There has been a lot of study on this by many game designers.

Even if they say they don’t take vanilla stats into consideration, it’s…baked into your game. A 2-3 with an OP ability would likely see a power nerf, since it’s “above vanilla power”. What constitutes “good enough to see play” factors in what a vanilla rate card is aka the absolute baseline return on investment. If a card is below that return on investment, it doesn’t see play because players consider it not worth the trouble even compared to a card with no abilities at all. Deadpool starts at 1 power because he’s finicky, and has a high ceiling. By “vanilla” stats he should be a 1-2, but then he’d be too far above the curve of power vs energy, so they had to lower him to 1.

i think something that was sort of "lost in translation" from snap to mtg about the vanilla stats is that it's not really an official stat line in the sense of a company guideline, it's just that they made a set of vanilla cards with those stats, but unlike magic where you have thousands of cards over the years with a bunch of them being vanilla creatures, in snap you only really have one set of 6 vanilla cards so it became the vanilla stats

I was so confused when CGB gaslit himself into thinking Cassandra nova was npc, I don't play card games but she was the first card I've said Manhattan in like 5 seconds of seeing a card. The power swing is insane, if you even pull a 4 power buff you essentially did a 8 power swing cause you gave yourself 4 and they lost 4. Insane

If you get 4 Power Cassandra, it is ass. Your opponent only draws one card of the reduced ones and can often afford to just not play it. Then silver sable would be the most broken card ever, because it does pretty much the same, but at 1 power instead of 3. Reason Cassandra is still good, is because Dark Hawk is good and Arishem still sees play. You do not want to just slap a cassandra into your deck right now.

But yeah it's not nearly as good anymore

One key thing about Blade that didn't get mentioned, is that the right side of your hand is also where generated cards go. This makes Blade synergize very directly with Swarm, Apocalypse, and Dakken (though it also means he can be countered by Black Widow, which is always funny).

I disagree entirely, it would make her worse. If you play her on turn 1 your opponent could just choose to not play a 1 drop there. If your opponent plays a Sunspot and you play Elektra on turn 1, instead of destroying it immediately, it gives your opponent an opportunity to play a random 1 drop to block the effect. You also can no longer play her on Turn 6 to surprise the opponent. There are zero circumstances where Elektra changed to Activate isn't a nerf.

​@@Red-sv5fu Nobody is playing Elektra and those that are have bad rates with the card. None of those plays you mention are good. Sunspot is a mid card. Turn 6 Elektra is just as counterable by extra 1s in the lane. She is a bad card and acting like taking away what she does makes her worse is just wrong. Nobody above Pool 2 uses her. Changing her from what she is (which again I repeat is unplayed) to something more like Echo or Goose, forcing your opponent to make possibly less-than-optimal choices instantly changes her from unplayable NPC garbage to much more gluten-free bread. An ability in Snap hyper-focused on deleting one enemy 1-drop in a lane is never going to be meta valuable because there should never be a 1-drop that dominates the meta so much that it requires it. 1 energy cards are generally not intended to carry a lot of power on their individual cards. Her best target is probably Nebula. Sunspot just isn't scary anymore, you can do a LOT more with your energy than 1-for-1 on a fragile 1-drop. I'd take an admittedly mid and weaker version of Negasonic over her current state, 100%.

You think it would be a less optimal play or be even impactful to play a 1 drop on a different location? Like oh well I guess I’ll play Nebula on one of my other two locations without Elektra. Then you’ll just be left with a 1 Power card that takes up space. The reason Elektra doesn’t see play isn’t because you can’t play her on curve. It’s because she only deals with a single 1-drop at a single location randomly. The only thing “Activate” Elektra changes is that it’s become significantly more predictable for YOUR OPPONENT.

A thought experiment for the "vanilla statline" would be to find the card that gets you the highest power for its cost 1. unconditionally (no deckbuilding requirement, location etc.) and 2. with no basic downside (ignoring that downsides can be turned into advantage - like Sword Master). I used to feel like Silver Sable was a pure 1/3 but _technically_ she can be a 1/1 vs a Cosmo or an empty deck, so 1/2 is holding strong. Meanwhile Aero as a 5/10 is pushing things as her ability _can_ mess things up for you, but is generally seen as a positive (similar to Magneto).

Credit where credit's due. I was one of those "um actually" and I held back from immediately watching because I was still a little salty when I saw a notification for this. Vanilla stats becoming outdated is just a self-fulfilling prophecy with card games, like 2/2 bears in Magic now running around with powerful and very playable effects, and 3000 attack in Yugioh that was once coveted for Blue Eyes White Dragon becomes the standard for big boss monsters. My gripe never was about giving him the average playable statline, but giving it in place of vanilla stats without actually clarifying what he meant. Props for coming out clean for the audience and especially CGB.

A great way to explain how broken Cassandra Nova’s power stealing is would be to ask “how many Magic cards would be unplayable if they cost 1 more mana?” It’s not quite a 1 to 1 parallel as mana is a much more impactful number to tweak, but power is a more impactful number on a Snap card compared to other card games. The difference between Misty Knight and Blade is significant, even if the on-reveal doesn’t come up.

When I saw 3/1 Cassandra I thought it was a filthy pick, very hard for someone to guess that card was nerfed, I'd imagine Mog also expected a smartphone call on it... and then CGB goes completely off the rails lmao, thumbnail acquired. Tough episode as lots of those happen to be synergistic or archetype-specific cards but that happens when you follow a tight theme. there's a lot of unwritten rule that matter for gambit-exodia, it's far less effective than it was at launch because of it, you have to have something to discard for the effect to go on and reveal are capped at 8 trigger, so you can no longer destroy all 12 spot, unless you do it with odin, then you could get up to 64(8x8) triggers, but it's extremly inconsistent since you would need to play gambit and discard 4 card without discarding Odin or have a kamar taj/onslaught citadel, then you could use a spot for invisible woman and get 16(4x4) triggers

The real reason there is an "official" vanilla statline is that there is no design space for vanilla cards in snap, so only one exists per energy, making it the "official" vanilla card by default

Cassandra immediately gave me Prince Keleseth vibes from Hearthstone. He's a 2 mana 2/2 (slightly subpar) that buffs your whole deck by +1/+1 if it contains no 2-cost cards. Back in the day, if you played Keleseth on turn 2, despite the severe deckbuilding restriction, your win rate would skyrocket. So here we have Cassandra who has a 50:50 chance to show up in your hand by turn 3 with a very similar effect. I'm honestly surprised the 1 power nerf was impactful enough.

i had 80% winrate to infinite with a gambit combodeck this season. started playing 2 weeks ago. My deck does go for max 4 triggers with symbiot and wong. but if you play ghost on 3 and kill monger gambit on 6 you counter a bunch of decks. with rogue and enchantress i get rid of stong ongoing effects, with redskull on 5 i have nice synergy if i only get 2 or 1 triggers in the end with gambit, but still that surprisingly often wins me games. in infinite its vulnerable against many things tho so yeah its not a top tier but was very consistent until infinite

Cassandra Nova is a difficult card to judge (NPC though?) without the context of the meta at the time. That said, the minus 1 to all cards is really under valued. Even if those cards dont hit the board for your "additional power", you've still directed their play to something that may be sub optimal. There are a few cards like that were you never really see how big of an impact it might have had so they dont get credit

I wanna see what he thinks about original America Chavez, it was played in nearly every deck because it essentially thinned your deck and had a guaranteed 6 drop card being the last card you draw. Show him quick silver first tho, cause it doesnt work the same

Not sure I agree with Gambit's ranking if Wolverine got Smart-Phone. Gambit fills a similar role in Pure Discard of "not the best thing to be doing, but worth including in the lineup".
