I was the same age, for me it was listening to Angelcorpse's 'Exterminate' (1998). When I picked up that album as a metal drummer in 98 at 16 yo, I felt that it raised the bar for the extreme metal drumming techniques that Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel) & Jan Axel Blomberg (Mayhem) had established by the early to mid 90s. I believe while recording 'Exterminate' at Morrisound Studios Pete Sandoval was there as well recording 'Formulas' w/ Morbid Angel at the time and he met up with John and gave him some drumming tips for blast beats and other techniques, it really showed on that recording!

@@behindthen0thing525 my theory, he was pretty sloppy on exterminate, while good he for sure wasn’t the beast you see now and have for a while. I honestly think he took a break and hit the practice hard to reinvent into what you see today and have for a while, when the first origin album came out he was several levels above where he was previously with angelcorpse.
