I went into the Army in April '69, four months before Woodstock. When I heard Melanie for the first time, I fell in love with her and her music. I got married in 1976, and our first child was a little girl. The first name I thought of was Melanie, and my wife agreed. I am so tankful for her and the woman she's turned out to be.

We were sitting around a campfire in Finland in 1973. Everything was dark around us and then someone turned on the radio. The Nickel Song with Melanie and Me And Bobby Mc Gee with Janis Joplin was playing. I'll never forget that, because I was high up north with my German girlfriend-the time didn't matter and lots of mosquitoes were flying. I was in a sauna for the first time even with a lake .This year I was back in Finland after 50 years-more south and when I came to Germany I heard the "Nickelsong" on KZbin .I got a little sad because my youth with which I associate this song is over and my girlfriend, my later wife, died of cancer. When the tracks played, I cried.

When I was a child, parents of four kids in our neighborhood traded off carpooling to school, and I distinctly remember Melanie on the AM radio and one mother would tap the accelerator in time with the song, giving quite the ride in the back seat. Wonderful sounds to this day.

Dear Melanie, I'm sorry for what we all did to your song. We called ourselves "Freaks" when we stood, holding candles and singing along. But the freaks we have become, instead, are the most frightening, evil, hateful things... And we turned your song into the most awful sounds of fear and desperation that bounce off our own ears, pretending. Just pretending. Someday again, we will lay down, light our candles that show the way through the rain. You will be there, all around, with your voice of sincerity bringing your song back for us to share and use to turn all this right round again. Love & Peace

About 40 years ago I walked into a store one day and heard Melanie For the firat time. she was singing "Brand new key. " I still recall two things about the experiance 1) how moved I was by her innocence and Angelic voice 🤗 2) and how unmoved the few people who were actually yelling at each other during her performance 😐 i instantly recaled my favorite preacher,the late Pastor Chuck Smith, portrayed in the current film " Jesus Revolution" say; " people can't give what they don't have, it's like measles''.

A touch of Buffy st Marie in her voice
@lasinmt1066 ай бұрын
No Buffy but their stories and era are not far apart. Both won awards for writing songs one an Academy one an Emmy and those who used them in both situations for movies didn't actually appreciate their talents or want to share it with them either. One does wonder what is wrong with those types. But here is to both ladies and may Melanie be that most shining star in heaven we look up and see on a clear night and feel her soul and crave listening to her music. Buffy was just getting going herself and was just as rebuffed by the popular media. At least Melanie as far as I ever knew wasn't treated like a criminal to be watched by the FBI and other nonsense like Buffy. But to have both ladies in concert today maybe in heaven one day. Maybe we'll all gather wearing our Beautiful People Buttons on and see them both. They could belt out from their toes their souls for sure.
