In this morning’s Coffee Talk, we are talking about when to know if you should walk away from a job.
If you’re someone who is mistreated at work, or feel your job is hurting your mental health-and are not sure what to do, especially if money is tight or you live paycheck to paycheck, today’s video is for you.
I also share my #1 strategy to find a new job.

This coffee talk speaks LOUD & CLEARLY to me!!!... I hated my job so much that it made looking for work after work, very hard to do. It flared up my PTSD and with some savings and financial leverage from my credit cards, I resigned. I have rediscovered happiness. The day I resigned, a recruiter reached out to me. I have now 2 interviews since leaving almost 2 weeks ago. The universe has opened up opportunities as a result of me opening myself to new possibilities. My goal is to be employed inside of 30 days from the day I resigned. Great Coffee Talk today!!!:-)

How’s it worked out for you? Are you happier with your position and outlook in life? Was it hard at first?

It’s difficult to step out of a toxic situation and immediately feel super positive and raring to go looking for a job like literally the next day. It’s really important to give yourself time and space to heal so that you are in a positive frame of mind and confident when approaching recruiters and attending interviews. Competition is tough out there and any amount of job hunting won’t work if you have low self esteem. I quit a really oppressive job, did the maths made sure I could cover six months expenses but I started looking after three weeks. I needed a break to reconnect with myself again so I could bounce back with confidence.

Monsoon you are so right - I’ve just resigned from a really toxic work situation as well. Working there has destroyed my self esteem and I’m not in the right frame of mind to find something permanent. So once I finish in May I’m going to take a couple of months, do a bit of relief work and study before the big recruitment season starts (July - September). There is nothing more devastating that working for someone who takes pleasure in tearing down her staff.

Donna Cianciosi - Hey Donna wishing you tonnes of love and luck. It was really tough for me because I had to leave a great working relationship behind of ten years. My boss’s partner was very autocratic and relished the fact that his employees felt intimidated by him. I was working 24/7 but no matter what I did it was never good enough. I stayed out of loyalty but the No 1 lesson I learned was that I owe some loyalty to myself. We often too easily forget that. Disconnecting wasn’t easy because I gave so much and when I look back it still hurts sometimes, but you just have to move on for your own good and let Karma take care of the rest. You will get through this and shine like a bright star 🌟 I promise 😊.

Did everything work out? I've had the same job for 20 years, but have had some problems with the newest manager of my team. He's not even new anymore at 5 years in, but I'm realizing it is very unhealthy for me to stay. I've actually felt that way since 2017 and asked to leave his team, but his boss encouraged me to keep trying and I think I give up now. When he first came on board, I ended up dropping out of school out of stress, because he called me two days in a row while I was in class, in a denigrating way. That was 5 years ago, and I just mentioned returning to part time school and he said "You Don't Need A Degree...". Current plan is to return to school to finish my degree in January 2022.

Get FMLA, short and long term disability, build emergency budget, cut out as much as necessary, let family and friends know, network, make sure you take care of yourself ( self care, exercise ) re-evaluate your job skills, seek career counselor, apply in person. You got this. I did it and you can. I got all the faith in the world in you. You are awesome!

Thanks a lot from Switzerland! You give such concrete and down to earth advices! I made a great move last year by leaving a job because I felt that I had to learn new compétences and « expand » my horizons as you say. I now work in such a rich environment and I learn news things everyday although it demands a lot of energy! I’m 48 and I cannot thank you enough for your generous coaching! I wasn’t unhappy with my previous job because I loved the people with whom I worked but I knew it was the moment to switch because I was stuck in routine and not progressing anymore.

This coffee talk couldn't have come at a better time for me. I love the company I work for and I make great money. However, the current position that I am in I dread!! I thought about going into management but my priorities in life have shifted. I realized that I need a more flexible position that will allow me to spend more time with my family. The lightbulb went off in my head when you said to make a list of everyone I know and speak to them. I am going to do that right now. I have friends in my company that are in a different division of my company that I can network with. I cannot thank you enough!! (Also, thank you for telling me that you love me after each video. I need to hear that! I love you too! 😁)

Thank you for keeping it real with us. It’s nice to see you in your home, your sacred space where you’re interacting with your kiddo’s and not by a script. I settled and went back to the veterinary field that I left because of compassion fatigue. I reached out of my comfort zone and have spent the past six years trying new fields but nothing stuck. I think I’d be a great writer and find a way to make it a career but I’m insecure, terrified to start something that has no structure by an employer. I am miserable every other day, feel like I’m treating this washy/washy feeling like it’s normal, but it’s not. It’s affecting my mental health and my gut tells me to run away on the chaotic days. I need to make a living but it wouldn’t be traumatic if I quit because my husband can support us for several months but I need to work. I’m struggling and not sure if I should just hang in there till I learn how to be a paid writer? I’m becoming a whinny complainer at home and that’s just not me, I’m a high energy, happy Leo and I feel like a failure at 45 because I’m so lost, don’t have s meaningful career, lacking a zest for life and depression has creeped in. I currently see a counselor once/week, have a holistic doctor helping me find a balance with diet and supplements. I think I may need to find time to mediate or something since I’m having panic attacks at work in the bathroom where I hide when we get slammed at work. I use my breaks to watch your videos to calm me, to inspire me and help me get through the rest of the day. I sit in my car after work for 2-5 min and scroll through online jobs but the pickings are gloom. I feel like I can’t come up for air. I get up at 5am, take care of my senior cats/dog with medications, special food and supplements, get ready for work, drive 30 min, arrive, work 10 hour days, drive home, make dinner, feed/medicate/supplement pets then shower and go to bed at 8pm. I literally have NO me time. Rinse, repeat. I’m starting to freak out.

I completely understand her situation. I too am currently going through a similar situation. My health and family structure has deteriorated tremendously. I'm on a leave at the moment. But pondering about going back to such a toxic and hostile environment. Creating a budget to hold me for 3-6 months. I pray that going lady finds the clarity she needs to move forward with her decision.

Best thing I could have done was quit a toxic work environment. I put up with a job I hated for 6 years!! I quit because I was so depressed and at a breaking point. I didn’t have a backup plan or job in place but as soon as I started looking for a job the interviews started pouring in. Not saying that will happen to everyone, but opportunities definitely opened up in my life and I found a job that I love.

#Thinkthisnotthat: Watching from Napier, New Zealand :D - Thank you Mel - I quit a toxic job without another job to go to October last year. I felt guilt because of the pressure it put on to my wife to carry the can for us, but the reality was, the work pressure was worse than the financial pressure. I was getting migraines, felt sick and didn't want to leave the house each day, and all of it because of work place bullying. I do run my own business right now, and since doing the Mindset Reset course with you, feel myself digging myself out of the hole. Just in doing Mindset Reset and the morning journal method, I'm accomplishing so much more than I had been after I left that job. After I left that job I needed to sleep a lot. I had job interviews but didn't manage to snag a job. I guess I just felt bad about myself, even though I know I'm a hard worker and great at customer service. That toxic job situation had made me doubt myself and my skill set. I'm a writer as well, I've written a few novel manuscripts, but during that time, I couldn't write a single thing. I felt stuck, and I now realise that the being stuck was because I was either at work or asleep and not learning anything like I am now. Right now, I'm making money by selling stuff, and working through my business and working on getting one of my novels ready for approaching publishers. Thank you for the networking idea. Yep, I'm scared of personal PR, but in this day and age, you just have to find the courage and just Do It Anyway. Right now, I'm working on my personal well-being - I'm exercising at least ten minutes per day, and at least 30 minutes 3 times a week and I'm feeling myself re-gaining strength in my body. This is key to my changing my appeal to future bosses and business prospects. Today I watched as several things happened due to my journal method and goal setting for each day - one of my book reviews was published by the Bookseller's Association of New Zealand just as I joined a network in the publishing industry. I'm getting GoodReads (www.goodreads.com) followers. I'm getting involved in booky projects that are leading me to places I never thought possible. And this, for me as someone who has worked in the bookshop industry for years, is mind blowing and I thank you for that! I'll keep an eye on when 'Think This, Not That' comes out - and I put it out to you - send me a copy and I'll review it for you and offer it to my industry so that your work gets out to an even wider universe. Thanks Mel!

I landed a job during the pandemic. It is a huge company with great benefits. Families and friends are very proud of me. However, deep down I doubt if I am a good fit. I usually work 60 - 70 hours per week and have anxiety attacks frequently. I could not eat nor sleep normally, but I also don't have the courage to walk away from the "golden handcuff". I wonder if I keep pushing myself to the limit and staying strong, would it be better than just giving up, or would there be irreversible consequences...

I got a bad manager 5 years ago, and I just realized this year that I had basically given up every hobby and put on weight and just feel generally unhealthy. Before they came on board I was full of energy, producing more work than anyone, improving my skills constantly, having positive relationship with clients, going to school part-time with straight-As, volunteering in my community, riding my bike across town to home/work/school every day, and life felt full of possibilities. He gradually pulled all of the positive work stuff away, and I think I got so focused on trying to keep work fun that I gave up everything else. He was so bad that he even called me during class harassing me two days in a row and I dropped out from stress. I feel like I am just waking up from a bad dream.

Ive made the 'mistake' of leaving the toxic job after 7 years and have been looking for a new job for the last 8 months, in the meantime I am working a lot of freelance gigs to keep our family afloat and it is exhausting and sucks- Im up at 5am and in bed at 11pm.. . I actually think for my sanity, staying in the job would of been easier if I had known how long it would take to find something new-- everyone said if I left I would find something new without issues.. but yeah, it was all wrong.. Im trying to build my own business 'on the side' and its all a mess.. the financial stress isn't worth it for me in the end, Im the beadwinner and I think if my husband had a job, it would of been a much easier transition but instead I just feel like it's all snowballing downhill

#AskMel Question with two parts- a) would you be comfortable in a work environment where employees have to lie that they were sick whereas they were attending a friend's wedding/ day out with their families.. to justify taking a day off from work? b) would you be comfortable at a workplace where people can't delegate work/ work as a team because they are so insecure that other colleagues will start taking credit for their work and people constantly underplay the colleagues behind their backs? I teach at an undergrad college. I love my job. I can't seem to bear this work environment. And I have tried changing jobs, the environment doesn't change. Got any advice on how to deal with this?

#askMel I'm recently a single mom with a 3month old and a 4year old. I'm currently not working and staying at home with my family's help. I have a degree in Special Education but I want to pursue public speaking to share my message about abuse, mental and emotional health, and being a life coach to help other women. If I'm to be a single mom, the only way I see to financial independence and spending time with my children is through creating a business. Should I choose to pursue a career based on my degree or based on my life experiences? Where should I start? Thanks.

What if you lack options due to having no education, being mid life age, and literally every job you've had is a bottom low wage job with negative people, gossip, inmaturity, and people who sabbotage you? My last three jobs, my supervisors were condescending to me. This is a particular trigger for me. So, I just went home and never went back. I then spent days not leaving my bed because I have anxiety/trauma issues. Btw, I have no family, am isolated, and have no connections. It gets WORSE! I lost my entire 40s over something job related and have suffered mental illness and isolation from it. I also am too afraid of trying to go back to this situation because of all this. Even though I will have no closure if I don't. Meanwhile, I need something currently. Although I'm mentally suffering and the life losses are something I'm merely coping with, I'm still a resilient person that comes around and tries again. But why are these places like this???? Why can't people be respectful and peaceful? I show up smiling, giving everyone respect, caring, and doing my personal best. But people make a work place a place that gives people cancer, heart attacks, and mental health problems.

The numbers for unemployment are way off. Many people are not collecting unemployment benefits because they put you through so much sh*t it's not worth the money

Exactly! So many people work temp or contract work but have large gaps in between. But I guess I'll play around with LinkedIn a bit more. Couldn't hurt.

I’m in a job where there isn’t any growth for me. I want to find a different job but I don’t have a GED. At the moment I can’t go back to school to get it because of situations in my life. I wanted to build my own business in a MLM that I love there product, but I’m not getting anywhere. I’m beginning to desire to be a travel agent again, but as I said don’t have GED. I’m kinda stuck with a crap job until I go to get it.

+Mel Robbins you must be exhausted about hearing if people should quit their job. This epidemic will never change. People will always either Hate their job or want to quit until they Matter in the work they do and actually care about what they do. From experience, I've learned no matter what job I go to I will be dissatisfied and the reality is that jobs were not meant to give you satisfaction but to award you a paycheck for showing up. Its not until you reap the benefits of working a profitable business you own that you'll truly be satisfied. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy then I don't know what the Hell to tell you. Mindset is part of the equation towards getting out of a job you Hate but also barriers to entry into many of the occupations people aspire to work in can be rediculosness.

I kind of agree ... my take on "Jobs" is that they are simply a tool to use to pay for your freedom, when you send out the emotions and vibration that you hate your job, the Universe feels that and it confuses the Universe. As far as the Universe is concerned, it provided the job for you, it was what you wanted at the time and it served you. If you could seriously be grateful for it now, may the Universe will get back on side and start helping you find the true path you want your life to take ... but gratitude will be the one thing that truly sets you free ... This coffee talk is a crucial piece for people starting a business from a place of employment ... and please hear the stats that Mel Quotes in this video around failure rates of below 30% for folks starting a side gig whilst in a job ... REALLY GOOD SENSE IN THIS VIDEO Thanks @MelRobbins, #askmel

@@SteveGreenhalgh I never saw things the way you just described them.... thank you for that actually, that's quite eye opening. I mostly hate my job because the environment is toxic, I'm mistreated by my boss and other unpleasant things. But you are right, I need to be grateful for it no matter what. Because when I got it I was grateful and relieved. I'm definitely gonna work on that, while I figure out what I'm gonna do next, in a more positive mindset, even though it's very difficult.

#askmel. Hey Mel... This one is a great video and my question is what does one do when they have absolutely none to network. I feel stuck and stupid that I've got not a single person whom I can put this across... Please do tell me how to go about this. Thank you

#askmel. What if you have an awesome job and boss and coworkers BUT are bored and not being fulfilled with that line of work. I feel like I would be crazy to leave that type of job.
