Other than in the title, nowhere during the narrated story does it say Maxx was a Retired Police Dog. It just says the lady had adopted Maxx from a shelter YEARS before. It never says just how old Maxx is but does say he had a glossy black coat. That actually doesn't add up since most Police Dogs are retired at around 8 - 9 years old on average as Police Work is hard on the Police Dogs plus large breeds of dogs have a average life span of 10 - 14 years old. Most Shepherds also get gray around the muzzle and have physical problems when they become seniors. While it is not imposable for Maxx to be older than 14 years and still in good physical shape, it is unlikely. Being a so called "Retired Police Dog" and being mistreated before the shelter got him, would have taken it's toll on Maxx's body. I will just say the story, while very nice, it is using poetic licence a lot to make the story interesting lol

Amen, remember that Dog is God spelled backwards, I think God gave us these extremely special animals to love us and protect us to be our best friends. I had 2 German shepherds. Mother and daughter the mother came from Argentina as top female protection dog. She was 8k dollars for her title and training. Her daughter was actually trained by her mother. I never felt so sage they were big girls and very threatening looking and very smart. Never felt so safe they have since passed and not a day goes by that I don't think about them, sometimes crying because I miss them so much. Best protection dogs ever. My ex husband came to my house passed off a yelling. My Germans growled deeply and my ex left. Good job to my beautiful protective friends. XOXO

@@RichardPennetti Our daughter is a K-9 LEO on nightwatch. Yes, here in the US K-9 retirees are usually always adopted by their handlers. If not, there is a propensity for legal implications when a service K-9 is adopted by someone in the general public. If the K-9 bites or attacks someone, the department faces charges for allowing the dog to be handled by an inexperienced owner. For their service the K-9 usually receives ongoing veterinary care and food/supplies for the remainder of its life. Our daughter is also now a certified K-9 trainer, who is licensed to board military or law enforcement dogs. That tends to be an issue when K-9s are adopted by their handler, they just can’t board them anywhere. It must be a K-9 certified person for safety reasons. Retired handlers travel to our area to board dogs with her while they go on vacation. Her shepherd partner goes with her on vacation as well as her Belgian Malinois’. They are exceptionally well behaved dogs, and constantly look to her for commands.

@@janetamerasinghe7824 l Jan of 2009 l brought Shep at a pet store. He was 2 mos old. l brought him as a b'day present for my father, but he was a loving family member to all of us. He would have turned 16 yrs old last Thurs. As he got older walking became more and more difficult for Shep sometime after he turned 8 yrs old. By the time he turned 12 yrs old he was in pain crying all the time and could no longer walk to the point where he could not even stand up to walk to use the bathroom. My parents made the painful choice to put Shep to sleep and l am still upset about that. l feel as if my parents took him away from me when they choice to put him to sleep. l miss Shep so much, things have never looked the same for me since he has been gone.

I had brought a mattress down to lie near him because he had not been himself and I couldn't take him to the Vet until the next day, but he died next to me. It must be at least 45 years ago, but I could never get another dog, although I've had a few cats, which are also lovely in their own way too.

As a child we had a Belgium Shepard. He was a police dog that for some reason had been let go. Lucky for my family. He was very protective of my mother and us kids. He would walk us to the bus stop for school each day. Needless to say, no one ever picked on us at the us stop. He was my protector. I still miss Brutus to this day. I’m 68 and if I ever end up alone that’s the first thing I am going to purchase. Belgium Shepards make the best dogs and protectors.

I have had two German Shepard's both of them attached themselves to me. During the time they were with us I had to make sure they were in the bedroom so my son's and I could wrestle around and play on the floor without the dog's getting in a panic. One DAY when I came home from work, I didn't see what happened at first but finally when I did I was in shock and awe. In the master bedroom I saw the window open and the screen removed then I saw CLAW MARKS on the wood at the bottom of the window. I turned around and Julie my one German Shepard started looking at the window...then me and I PRAISED HER SO MUCH AND BIG HUGS TOO for deterring a 2nd attempt to rob our home. Julie our New German Shepard had a way of being very quiet so obviously she must have been hiding while they finally tried to enter our home. To this day I am positive she got a piece of whoever it was because they never came back again. Praise God.

We had a ex military guard dog once. A long haired German Shepherd. She was very calm and relatively gentle, but I would always keep an eye on her. I was once playing chase in the park with her and she grabbed my arm and tried to pull me to the ground. But it was like she suddenly remembered that she wasn't a guard dog, I wasn't a threat. So she let go and became very submissive. You have to be ultra careful with former service dogs. Although they get the idea they are retired, there is always that little former role still in there.

Years ago whilst waiting outside my boyfriend mother’s house with my dog a bloke approached saying he had lost his cat. My dog growled and the bloke stepped back.
