Nicholas Eberstadt and John question why some support a Universal Basic Income, or UBI, when Nicholas' work has demonstrated the deleterious effects of large welfare schemes for individuals. Nicholas points out that the decline of the 'summer job' - casual employment for teenagers - is a contributing factor to men beginning work later in life, yet being evermore unfamiliar with the demands of modern workplaces.
See their full interview here: • America's Invisible Cr...
Nicholas holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he researches and writes extensively on demographics and economic development generally, and more specifically on international security in the Korean peninsula and Asia. Domestically, he focuses on poverty and social well-being. He is the author of numerous books, notable among them 'Poverty in China', 'The Tyranny of Numbers', 'Russia's Peacetime Demographic Crisis', and his latest, 'Men Without Work: America's Invisible Crisis'.
Nicholas has offered invited testimony before Congress on numerous occasions and has served as consultant or adviser for a variety of units within the US government. He has a PhD in political economy and government, an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government, and an AB from Harvard University. In addition, he holds a master of science from the London School of Economics.

"They're afraid of starting families. They're scared of getting married." Of course they are, and they should be. Given what the family court can, and will do to them. I'd be very concerned if they weren't scared.

Most men do not want custody of their kids. When they do, courts typically award 50/50 custody. The laws all say you can’t automatically presume one parent is better than the other based on gender.

It isn't completely fear. It's like looking at a casino from the outside and weighting the options then deciding not to go in having seen the results out on the street of the people who did go in.

A casino is a little too much of a luxurious analogy - unless you meant that everyone was playing the russian variation of roulette. Otherwise, yes. It's not fear - so much as realising the odds are stacked well against you, and that the house always wins.

I am a lawyer in Australia and practice in the area of family law and criminal law. I get to see it all. Unfortunately, Nicholas Eberstadt comes across as lecturing to men and reinforcing their prejudices about how society sees them. Men are only reacting to the reality of their situation and men have begun to realise that society will only pay attention to men and their needs when society suffers from men's disengagement. Marriage and having children is a very high risk and low rewards deal for men. The cost of housing and of having children is prohibitive. I hate to say this but if marriage and having children was a business deal, I would be advising against going ahead with the deal.

We're not afraid. We are fed up with the hatred from a society we built. It's your generation John, that did this, you and all the other weak men. Instead of blaming men, take responsibility, that would be a good first step.

Yet more excellent and thought provoking content, John Anderson. Thank you! I think that the missing piece in this dysfunctional “jigsaw” is the impact of feminism and the associated cultural “ripples”. If men are afraid of, or less capable of assuming, the breadwinner role, it is contributed to strongly by the demonisation of men in general by contemporary culture. I hasten to add that the man assuming the “breadwinner” role will almost never find the counterpart to that role, namely a female homemaker (the trad wife fad notwithstanding).

It’s a terrible shame, the feeling of success is wonderful. Everyone deserves to have that feeling. Perhaps we will have to redefine what success is (not just a job).

I had jobs throughout my teen years. This did not keep me from being in a terrible spot in my career in my 20s and struggling to find confidence in the workplace. I often wish I could go back to those jobs I used to have, as they were so simple and stress free. I didn’t have bills, among many other challenges, as a 15 year old either. Alas, those teen jobs don’t make much money, and would land me on the street if I tried to take those jobs now. However, I think the idea behind what Nicholas is saying is true. He is basically saying that the best preparation for the real world is experiencing the real world while you are still around your family (assuming it is a relatively supportive family/parents). Turning 18 does not mean someone is ready to be an adult. Being an adult requires a transition. You can’t just walk on a job site and start doing the electrician’s job, you have to get training/education, and you have to PASS that training. Kids will have to prove their mettle in some skills before they can officially be adults. Training to prove oneself will take longer than the age of 18. I think one of the best ways to prepare someone for adulthood is to help them learn a marketable skill or two BEFORE they graduate high school. That will give them a ton of confidence.😊 Oh, and understanding workplace law and behavior can be a real leg up too. But that won’t really be learned until someone is part of a company anyways, as there is a lot of nuance to it.

Conservatives seem to forget that employment needs to pay enough to cover expenses. If entry-level jobs don't pay enough even to cover rent, then the job market causes depression in men. The claim that being unemployed is somehow worse that being employed and unable to afford a place to live is idiotic. Both lead to the same desparation, but the latter also breeds resentment and disillusionment. Support for UBI is linked to a justifiable desire to escape the humiliation and despair caused by this.

I agree but can this be used to control people according to what the state defines as acceptable speech? If you convine this with the rising trend of liberty supression in the name of an imaginary "greater good" and the usage of digital currencies, how can someone not feel a little bit worried in the face of goverment corruption and criminal elements in politics? Please, destroy my paranoia and distrust. I need it gone.

It is a disturbing trend to see so many able-bodied men just hanging out and not working. What is even more disturbing is that women are getting pregnant by these men? It’s unlikely these men are strong parents or make good role models for their families and their women become increasingly more unhappy. Women, be more choosy and pick men who are aiming up and willing to work hard right along with you.
