There are few contributing factors for the stiffness of Mercedes Benz Steering" 1. Worn steering pump. 2. Worn or faulty steering rack. 3. Wrong or bad fluid. 4. Dirty Reservoir and filter. 5. Bad ball joints and rack ends 6. Wrong and non standard rim and tyre size. 7. Slipping pulley or bad belt. 8. Low idle speed. 9. Solenoid valve on the rack that controls the speed-variable power steering... In this video I focused more on #4 and #3 as these are common sense and less expensive to deal, next video will be on #9. Please comment, feedback, like, share, and subscribe, cheers... Max.

Good video ,thanks Max. My only extra information is that the factory clamps can be easily undone and reused . Use a pick tool to release them by pulling the loop section up , and use pliars or pincers to re - attach them. It is also advisable to use a new rubber seal when fitting a new reservoir. MB spec power steering oil is spec 236.3 , which in Australia is usually a straw yellow colour ,,Swag and Febi Bilstein No. 08972. One other small factor could also be low tyre pressure.

Great video showing before vs after 💯. I notice your new clamp is 'worm gear' type vs original factory 'constant tension' clamp. Make sure you check the new clamp from time to time b/c they can get loosen. In addition, I prefer the clamps made by ABA or Norma b/c they don't have those tiny slots which can eat into rubber hose !

Thanks mate, you are right about the clamp, will fix this after my exams.

Thanks Max. Nice video. l personally would have changed the O ring as its probably over 20 years old now. lt won't last forever. My C32 AMG has a slight engine vibration at idle. Above idle its fine. Any experience with that on your V6's? Thanks.

Thanks mate, first thing to check is the engine Mounts. Then wires and plugs, EGR cleaning and hopefully that solves the issue.

Would you also recommend cleaning the valve in the steering pump? Which is by unscrewing the bolt which is connected to the steel tubing. If some debris is stuck the valve doesn’t function properly hence the fluid amount isn’t travelled through it properly?
@BenzAddiction Жыл бұрын
I think that filter should not let any debris to go through and hydraulic fluid is the best detergent. In saying so I am not sure if this would be necessary.

Also if you get air into the system it won't work right. I usually take the cap of the reservoir and move steering wheel back and forth to get air bubbles out.

When I changed the reservoir, I noticed the connector for the reservoir on the pump was able to be spin around and was able to be manipulated in all directions. I was assuming this piece should be tightly sealed and affixed. Is this correct? I think that potentially broken connector is the cause of my continued leak.
@BenzAddiction9 ай бұрын
Are you talking about the return line or the line that supplies fluid to pump? None of these should be spinning.
@G_KODE9 ай бұрын
@@BenzAddiction Yes. The metal line from the reservoir to pump assembly. To clarify, at time index 5:50 when you took off the reservoir. The part that it hooks onto the pump assembly… mine is loose to the point it can be spin around. It doesn’t come off the pump assembly but it was my understanding that it should have been sealed/fixed in place.

Hello i have a 2017 SLC , the steering is stiff compared to different models in Mercedes-Benz , should i try replace the power steering reservoir or at this model there is another way to solve the problem, also, the vehicle has a low mileage 3000 KM Thanks.
@BenzAddiction Жыл бұрын
Well, replacing the reservoir is a part of servicing, I think you should check the suspention parts, check to see if you have adaptive steering, and start from the required services if you would like to do it as a DIY, so from the cheapest repairs and services to the more expensive ones, unless you have a plan to have the car checked by a professional mechanic as this is a more modern, low mileage and expensive car and this makes sense too.

I think you have a problem with deposits of old oil in the high-pressure valve of the steering column. Therefore, the oil flow and pressure in the steering rack is reduced, which contributes to more difficult turning.
