Mercedes L 406 D technical car with boom. Restoration of Siku model no. 1911.

At the end of the 1960s, the Siku company started producing Mercedes 406 models. This type of body was very popular among young customers, which is why several versions of this model were created. Today I am presenting a repair truck with a boom that I managed to buy at a flea market almost a year ago. In the renovation, I focused mainly on restoring full functionality of the boom, which is made of plastic elements. I had to use an innovative method of strengthening the plastic to prevent the boom from falling down on its own. I also chose one of the darker shades of orange paint that this model was painted with and provided the whole thing with a copied original packaging. Stary 406 D, klasyk SIKU. W tamtym czasie był dostępny jako karetka pogotowia, furgonetka pocztowa, pojazd pomocy humanitarnej, a także w pokazanej tutaj wersji. I po raz kolejny jestem zachwycona 🤩 super renowacja. Moja atrakcja: Prawie wszystkie oryginalne części zostały ponownie wykorzystane. Czy naprawdę muszę coś mówić o nowo wyprodukowanym „oryginalnym opakowaniu”? When I was growing up, the telephone company had similar vans, though painted in a green/turquoise colour. The main repair facility was located just a short distance from my house, so I saw their trucks daily. The electric power utility had much bigger trucks, painted white.

Interesting model, but I'd have binned the daft wheels and replaced them with proper ones! I made an inspection truck from a Corgi Jeep Street Lamp Inspection boom and a Budgie Scammell Scarab: it worked out quite convincingly. Nice colour on the Mercedes, and a worthwhile resto! Great work. The decals were oddly positioned on the original, though!

The only original proper wheels would have been on an older incarnation of this model, but by then, a bit too small. one would have to 3D-print a set, I think. many decals were misplaced on the models, especially on those that weren't licensed. SIKU used rub-on transfers back when, that's where the black residue comes from. these decals also could slide down the sides of a model over the years... I saw some that could not have been that misplaced at the factory. :)

Sorry but when we got the shot of the table, my eyes were immediately drawn away from today's model and straight towards the Stratos and the Mangusta. Like my kids say, I'm 60 on the outside but still 6 on the inside. 😂😂😂 I think you're an octopus really Paul, I would need 8 hands to do that. 😊 I loved the restoration of the hydraulic arm using the rubber bush. 👍

ooh, a "Steiger" version. those are rare, even rarer in a complete condition. though most of these lift arms are worn out long ago. you found a nice method to fix that. :) love the orange, too, their original orange often looked dull. maybe because they didn't use basecoating? possible.

Magnificent restoration, Maestro! This SIKU diecast was such an improved model to the Chevrolet Corvair SIKU you restored recently! The scale, details, features, and engineering in this Mercedes Boom-Truck are light years better! The random build quality and designs of SIKU have precluded me adding that brand to my Collection. But, in fairness, I get into enough trouble with Dinky, Corgi, Spot-On, Mercury, Politoys, Märklin, and Solido as it is!! The finicky door ordeal, with your GREAT search in your "Alladin's Cave" of spare parts was a fun process to watch! Your "woof" comment at the end made me laugh!! The close tolerances of the door pegs with paint inside them could NOT have helped in the fitting process! Your gasket and modified pins for the boom operation was inspired and VERY clever and effective! The box colors used by SIKU really leaves me scratching my head. How would a kid be attracted to such blah colors? I never saw a single SIKU model for sale in all the toy stores I frequented as a kid. Even if I did, going up against the colorful Corgi and Dinky (and SCHUCO Micro-Racer boxes for that matter) packaging would have left me cold. All that said, I enjoyed your transformation spin at the end VERY much!! Congrats, Maestro!! Best, Stephen

As I recall as a kid, the shelves were full of various SIKU boxes, we were just used to those colours. here in germany Corgi and Dinky were more expensive, and often offered less play value (opening parts, moving parts, and so on. which Corgi tanker had all lids opening up on top, as well as the tools and tab compartments open AND gave you hoses to stick to it?); Märklin was even more expensive and some time stopped offering trucks. Spot-On wasn't offered in most places at all, the Politoys/Mebetoys they imported were as cheap as they looked. Solido often imported only cars, and Mercury... well, I don't remember seeing them as a kid, back in the 70's, 80's. so you took what you could get. and if you get offered a huge mobile crane, or a truck carrying a gas station, bridge, space rocket, or whatever, you don't care about dull colours on the box.

@@lotharrenz4621 Very cool. I grew up in Portland, Oregon. One variety store was the only place we could buy diecasts. The only brands we hadwere Matchbox, Corgi, Dinky, and Schuco Micro-Racers. That's it. If we actually had other companies to choose from, it would have been nice. But those were the only ones we had. My first Corgi was in 1965, the red Ferrari 250 LeMans.

I'm located near Stuttgart, the southwest of germany. we used to have a toy store that was founded in 1833 (!), and was part of my youth (among a few others, including a little store in my home village) the old store succumbed to the new times, and eventually folded up in 2008. another store downtown catering to railway freaks, closed up a few years ago due to resentlessly climbing rent fees, and is now sellign on the internet only anymore. the rest... vanished. all we got is a used toy store, and a regular flea market downtown. curiously enough, there are more and more castings showing up that used to be impossible to find here, like early hot wheels, and other obscure brands. as if members of US forces sold all their stuff before returnign to their homelands?

Hallo, damit hast du mich natürlich wieder voll mitgenommen! Als Sikusammler den Hubsteiger neu aufzubauen ist richtig gut. Ich habe ihn vor Wochen auf einem Flohmarkt für 10€ bekommen. Natürlich ist der Hubarm total ausgeleiert, Deshalb war es schön zu sehen, wie du das Problem gelöst hast. Wenn ich dein Talent hätte, dann würde ich mich an die seltenen Sikus wagen, denn dann hätte ich diese endlich in meiner Sammlung. Leider bleibt mir da nur abzuwarten, in der Hoffnung, das ein oder andere Modell günstig zu bekommen. In jedem Fall freue ich mich auf weitere Sikus, die von dir wieder zum Leben erweckt werden!
