One of my favourite Canadian TV shows is "Still Standing". Hosted by comedian Jonny Harris, he travels to small towns that have fallen on hard times, gets to know the locals and does a free stand-up show for them, featuring their stories. It's hilarious, fascinating, heart-warming and touching all at the same time. Another great show is "Land & Sea". It's been on for more than 30 years, exploring the lives of Atlantic Canadians.

Me Canadian abroad: Two stories about Mike Myers 1. I was in Holland when 'Goldmember' came out. Watching that film with Dutch friends - seeing Mike crap on the Dutch, was priceless. 2. NYC - I lived around the corner from Mike. Know that Myers is a HUGE Toronto Leafs hockey fan. Well, I saw him across the street in the Village. I yelled out, "MIKE". He turned to me, and I said, "Canada!". He gave a thumbs up (CDNs are known at the 'metric jews' - travelling about...). Then I said, "GO HABS" (the rival Montreal hockey team). We both flipped each other the finger with a smile. /sooo Canadian :)

Born and raised Canadian here. I was offered a job in New York City in 2016, moved, and became very aware that I was Canadian. The first couple of months I would naturally hold doors open for people, thinking in my head that someone would grab the door from me and say 'After You'. Not one person did that or ever looked me in the eye and said "Thank You." Unfortunately, after that, I had to go against my own "Canadianism" and stopped doing it because they just didn't appreciate it. I eventually moved back to Canada in 2023.

When it comes to Canadians, imagine you're in a grocery store and you accidentally bump into someone. In Canada, it's common for both people to say 'sorry,' or for the person who wasn't at fault to apologize. Foreigners often misinterpret this as an admission of guilt, but in reality, it's just a way to deflect and minimize the situation so we can get on with our day. 😁
@brentdallyn8459

True, stepped on someone's foot touring Universal studio's, I said I was so sorry, he looked me straight in the eye and screamed 'That's not good enough!', I replied'OK then, I'm not sorry' and walked away, It was perfect.
@Carrie-so3ro
@Carrie-so3ro 29 күн бұрын
@@brentdallyn8459 Maybe you were too quick to revoke your "sorry". It may NOT have been "perfect" at all. He may have had foot issues, possibly torn ligaments, nerve damage or severe arthritis that would cause him to have a problem walking or even standing after what YOU did & may have completely ruined his day with complete & utter pain (& for the people with him). If you were just being careless, a simple "sorry" that you could then WALK AWAY FROM may NOT be seen (quite rightly) as good enough. You should INSTEAD have changed your answer to "REALLY sorry" & "you'll be more careful in the future" AND "are you okay?" The LAST QUESTION being the MOST important. If he explained that he was NOW, "NOT okay" you SHOULD have asked if there was anything you could do (since it would have been YOUR fault in the 1st place.) Maybe help find a place he could sit (& help him get there) or find someone who worked there to get him a chair. See if you could get him a bottle of water (or a hot, sugary drink & a salty snack - if the pain would cause him to go into physical shock) & if he didn't have pain medicine, if Universal Studios had any aspirin etc. You are obviously a healthy person who has never, ever injured your foot - but that is NOT everyone's experience. As a Canadian (ESPECIALLY), you SHOULD be thinking of other people & THEIR (potential) experiences & consider that in your interactions - not simply give an unthinking "sorry" without any meaning behind it. I am not saying this to be mean to you. I am saying this to get you TO THINK - about the experiences of OTHER PEOPLE, so that in future you will (hopefully) be MORE careful in crowds (with either stepping on their foot or banging into them) & also the potential harm you could be causing them & what you could do to LOWER the problems that you may have caused. I hope this makes you realise where you could do better in future. We all make mistakes, (including myself), but it is in trying to lessen the amount of them & what we can do to rectify & learn from those mistakes that is important. Have a good night.

@@Carrie-so3ro Yeah, no. Now, you apologize! They are not responsible for another person's entire life and it was accident. In a crowd, people get pushed into other people all the time. What he said about the most Canadian are the Canadians who live outside the country - I can see. When you live in Canada - the beautiful country & the way people interact is just taken for granted as an everyday thing - as it IS every day for us. I have found that when I have travelled around the world, every time I have come home I have had a greater appreciation for my country. Our people, our ways & the beauty of this country. I first noticed how TRULY beautiful Canada was through the eyes of tourists who were oohing & awwing at all the colours of our changing leaves in autumn. This was something that I always thought was very pretty, but seeing it as something that many other people DON'T see in their regular lives made me take a second look - & discover what I hadn't fully appreciated. Seeing pretty scenery in other countries (that didn't come anywhere close to the beauty I had experienced in many of the places I have been in Canada) but was being appreciated by other tourists made me "open my eyes" to my own Canadian scenery on my return. I am NOT saying that I have not witnessed truly gorgeous, spectacular scenery elsewhere in the world. I am just saying that I never really paid attention to how much we are on the same playing field as that here in Canada.

The “I’ve never felt so ____ since I’ve lived outside of ____”. It really brings it to the soul, being away from home. And it’s not just the nation. I’ve never lived outside of Canada, but I don’t live in the region that I consider home. And every time I visit my home region I feel SO at home. Distance does indeed make the heart grow fonder. I can completely understand why people from anywhere would begin to pine for home. Canada is huge, vast, and diverse. You can absolutely feel the same thing just moving to a different part of the country. East, central, prairie, and west are all very different. I miss my home so much, but I embrace my current home because we are all Canadian, but there is something that is missing. People that have never moved across the country really would never understand it. There is something about home that is ingrained at a young age. I haven’t lived in my hometown for over 23 years, and yet it still feels like home 😢. I’m sure my colleagues that are from other countries feel the same. There is something that draws them back to where they were raised. Being abroad just rings that bell.

I've always loved how Lena Horne as "Glinda" described home at the end of the movie "The Wiz": "Home is a place we all must find, child. It's not just a place where you eat or sleep. Home is knowing. Canadians are (for the most part), down-to-earth, nice, humble, compassionate, practical, intellectual, polite, people - with a touch of a sense of humour (including the ability to laugh at ourselves) & a desire to just get along with others. We consider others & we do NOT have a hair-string temper ready to go off at any second. We are NOT "passive aggressive" people as some people wrongly suggest - (I don't think these people truly know the ACTUAL definition of the term) - as it DOES mean ACTING aggressively towards others in a particular form & the ONLY time that Canadians are normally aggressive in ANY form is in a hockey game. We may not always have the "best" thoughts in our heads after an interaction with a person (incl. with some American tourists) BUT we don't act on it in any ways except to complain about the experience for the rest of the day - to other Canadians (such as when the American didn't say "thank-you" or "sorry" to us when a Canadian would have.) Mike Myers here shows that he DOES embody what a Canadian is really like & he makes a good ambassador, as so many of our other exports do in the entertainment industry. There are always a few Canadians on lists of the "nicest" actors in Hollywood, even on short lists. There are also a lot of Canadian actors who are "unsung heroes" in their charity giving & work (along with some that are better known for this incl. Drake & Ryan Reynolds. Have you seen the "thank-you" song that was created in Ryan Reynolds' honour yet when he won our Governor General's award? - called "Canada Loves You Back" by former member of the Barenaked Ladies [Steven Page]?) We are a quietly proud people, but proud none-the-less - in our beautiful country & in our people. Have a good day today Mert & I hope that you can come over & visit us soon & discover all of this for yourself.

It's generally accepted that, when the bus arrives, whoever was waiting the longest gets to go first. But also, I'm a healthy young man... There's not NOT an expectation that I should probably let women, children, the elderly, and the infirm on the bus first. And I do that. Fun fact: Mike Meyers actually voiced Shrek with a more Northern Ontario, "working's man" accent, more similar to Thunder Bay and the show Letterkenny. He said he wanted Shrek to have the voice/accent of someone from a "working class", not upper-crust, "well-spoken" or refined, but the studio execs didn't like it, (2000/01, so funny how tastes have changed!) and didn't think anyone would recognize it. So Meyers changed it to Scottish, an accent he also considered rugged, relatable and rough in the right ways as a Northern ON accent :),

Mike Myers has a pretty terrible reputation for being a monster to work with, and I'm not sure he's considered a Canadian "favourite son"? For that, look to Michael J Fox, or John Candy. John Candy has been dead for 30yrs now, but the anniversary of his death always creates a ripple on Twitter. For someone who has been through Hollywood, it is extremely unusual for someone not to just disappear if they contract a disability, whereas Fox became a campaigner and public face for the need for medical research and understanding. His acting career for the last twenty years has more or less been limited to guest appearances - and while his film and tv work was very popular, it wasn't what would be regarded as massively artistic. Despite this, and undeniably based largely on his character, if he shows up to an award show or similar he's almost certainly going to get the biggest standing ovation of the night.

We export Canadians, (& it is almost never their desire. Some go because they pretty much have to for the type of work they want & at other times it has even been AGAINST their will ie. Wayne Gretzky) - but NOT our Canadian culture so much. We have a HUGE catalogue of music in a variety of genres & it is quite dense FOR DECADES, but not a lot gets out. Very few of our TV shows get out. (Schitt's Creek is one of the only ones & that is because it WAS DESIGNED with American tastes in mind for attaining an American audience when created.) I don't know if any of it has ever been promoted in Europe - Britain or France/Belgium for example but I doubt it. We do NOT have a huge film industry at all. (This is really something that needs to be supported more in future when we have gotten ourselves back fully from the financial hit that was Covid & the problems with supply & demand created from the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.) This is why so many actors & even Canadian comedians who also want to explore film - go to the United States. We have our OWN school/type of painting - that was from (Tom Thompson &) The Group of 7, but it is not well known outside of Canada. I do not believe that we have any specific style of architecture that would be considered Canadian or any other type of "craft". We ARE known for diplomacy & how to mix cultures effectively without much turmoil & a good electoral system - & THESE parts of our culture DO get exported as other countries DO hire Canadian experts to teach them about these "Canadian ways" to incorporate in their own countries. (If anything, I think that these are MORE valuable Canadian cultural exports than any of the "lighter", purely entertainment cultural exports that could be & are exported by some other countries.) As far as Canadian movies, the only one I can really think of (from the 1980s even) is: "My American Cousin" - which is a very Canadian movie & does show the differences between Canadians & Americans by using the 2 cousins as a foil for each other. It was very well done, in a Canadian, quiet way that was a good story just on the surface but being Canadian it had the deeper intellectual meaning to it also.

Schitt's Creek is very popular in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In Europe it's almost 10x more popular than other shows available for streaming.

As a Canadian I was amused by 2 characters, Mack and Tosh, who were hosting the Bugs Bunny Show because each deferred to the other in introducing the next cartoon so much that nothing got done. I bet Canadians found it funnier than Americans did. Our national sport seems to be able to laugh at ourselves, basically a sign of maturity.

What Country would you say is most Canadian if you could pick? I was thinking king Australia even though we are so far from one another with total polar opposite climates and types of sports, but when thinking of the people I can kind of see Canadians and Ausies being very similar in our Culture, Diversity, also the same way of not having a Export Culture. I feel both nations have the same love in their respective areas listed above and are both proud unique Countries with the same roots. In my Opinion anyway if we were to take The Weather, Sport's and Politics out of the equation. Id like to hear what eveyone else thinks about this, their are alot of Countries out their like Cuba for example where their people and our people consider eachother to be like brothers, aside from the Communist Government that Unfortunately Control's their Country. I personally love the Cuban People, with their great hospitality and kindness they have only ever shown to Canada. Then there is also The Ukraine which we are very close to in regards to our diversity and mixed cultures l, at least in Manitoba for myself. There are so many to relate to for example, The Netherlands, Dutch, Denmark, Belgium, Scotland, etc. Thoughts?

We are so self-effacing that we do ourselves a great injustice. Canada and its citizens have shared many aspects of our 'culture' with the world. Usually we just share it rather than reminding everyone where it came from. When Mike Myers says we don't have any culture to export, he should look in the mirror to realise how stupid that statement is. There are numerous Canadian tv and movie productions being enjoyed around the world that show many different time periods, past to present, that reflect life in our country. i.e. Murdoch Mysteries, Schitt's Creek, Degrassi Junior High, Anne of Green Gables, Kim's Convenience, SCTV, The Nature of Things, Due South, The Littlest Hobo, Red Green Show, Trailer Park Boys, Corner Gas, Little Mosque On The Prairie, The Kids In The Hall, The Beachcombers, Mr. Dressup, Rick Mercer Report, plus many more. Also many French language productions. Hundreds, if not thousands, of talented Canadian actors, musicians, authors, directors, technicians and their work are enjoyed around the world. i.e. Mary Pickford, Marie Dressler, Glenn Ford, Lorne Greene, Hume Cronyn, Raymond Burr, Michael J. fox, Christopher Plummer, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Oh, Alan Thicke, Hayden Christensen, Pamela Anderson, Tommy Chong, many, many more. Canadian humour - Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Howie Mandel, Russell Peters, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, and many more. The same is true for the myriad of inventions from insulin, pablum, (we gave them to the world) to peanut butter, electric light bulbs (Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans, 1874 - patent later sold to Thomas Edison), zippers, telephone (conceived by Bell in Brantford, Ontario), first long-distance call (August 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made a call via the telegraph line between Brantford and Paris, Ontario, eight miles (thirteen kilometres) distance.), pacemaker, Canadarm, IMAX, walkie-talkie, alkaline batteries, paint roller, Canola, basketball, hockey, egg carton, goalie mask, Jockstrap hard cup, AM radio, Superman, snowblower, snowmobile, prosthetic hand, electron microscope, electric wheelchair, sonar, steam-powered fog horn, Easy-Off oven cleaner, Cirque du Soleil, 5-pin bowling, Trivial Pursuit, Wonder Bra, Ginger Ale, plastic garbage bag, Plexiglass, caulking gun, The Blackberry, Electric Oven, Yukon Gold potato, Java programming, computerised Braille, Explosive vapour detector, Bloody Caesar, Instant replay, so many more. Chimo
