Quorthon was a supremely cool guy. In the late 80's I worked at a metal record shop in Southern California and we hosted an in-store with Quorthon. No attitude or rock star aloofness, he was approachable, friendly and incredibly patient with all of the fans that were swarming him in that small shop. I had a couple of beers with him afterwards. Glad to say that I spent a few moments talking music with a really special musician. R.I.P. Quorthon \,,/, ,\,,/

He got somewhat ostracized from other black metal artists (particularly Euronymous and Dead) because of his humble, straightforward personality. Good on Quorthon for not being a tryhard twat and just being himself despite making some of the most intense and mysterious music ever. He didn’t need to put on a scary facade to be respected.

I find it fascinating how the lives of Quorthon and Chuck from death were so similar. Born a year apart on the different sides of the Western world. Both pioneered, maybe even invented a new genre of extreme metal. Both made less extreme and more philosophical music as they matured. Both died of factors outside of their control in the early 2000's. Long, wavy hair.

"Under the Runes" will always hold a special place for me, because it was my dog's favorite song. I know it's weird to say a dog has a favorite song, but she was a border collie, and they are super intelligent. She loved that song. Every time I put it on, she would run into my room and sit by the speakers with a big stupid smile on her face. I think she loved it because I used it to calm her down the first time she was having a freakout from the neighbor's holiday fireworks, and it became a comfort ritual for her after that. Back then some other bands were saying, in interviews, that Quorthon's dad writes all his songs, so I think he wasn't ashamed, more like wanted people to stop that gossip crap. Maybe that's also why he denied Boss was his father and said the age difference was too small. Personally, hell, even if Boss helped him write or arrange stuff, and yeah, Boss had a studio, awesome. And Henry Rollins drew a pentagram on his palm and gave the devil sign and said “ this next song is for my buddy satan up there” and I looked up and the guys from venom were watching them above the stage through the plexiglass window laughing: a week later I saw SOD at the same place and met billy Malano in the parking lot 🤟🏻

@@TheRageaholic I never owned the album phisically, but just by listening to War, you immediately can tell that it's waaaay different to everything else on it. It's unmistakably Bathory, even if you don't point it out on the cd cover, or during interviews, unless asked about it. But maybe it's just me.

I snagged Bathory when it came out as well. Thank you rageaholic...Great memories, great video,great rant my friend. LOVE ur channel

Venom obviously invented black metal, surprisingly in Newcastle, England a city with perhaps the most positive reputation in the UK, their accent is considered the most friendly haha.
@harbl996 жыл бұрын
Venom were tongue-in-cheek about it, as you might expect of a bunch of Geordies. "Aye, we dress oop in leather and sing aboot the devil. It's propah super-serious ye nah."

Venom wasn't as influential as Bathory was on the black metal scene in the late 80's and early to mid 90's. Even Fenriz of Darkthrone said the exact same thing.

Strangely, the resemblance between "The Sword" and "Blood of My Enemies" is even more apparent to me on Edge of Sanity's cover of "Blood of My Enemies".
@__Faust__6 жыл бұрын
Dan G Yeah, obviously the song is very similar, kinda Bathory's Blood of my Enemies. A great anthem nevertheless. Also you can see a lot of, ehem "influence' from Manowar in A Fine Day to Die(Bridge of Death intro) and Enter the Eternal Fire(Bridge of Death concept/lyrics). Quorthon was a cheeky bastard, he did get stuff from other bands but that doesn't change the magnitude of his achievement.
@AceLM926 жыл бұрын
Bro I'm so happy you finally made this episode, I was beginning to have doubts you would. If this video came out today, it would be a great (and only) b-day present. Since Boss really was Quorthon's father, I wonder if Jennie Tebler really is his sister. Blood Fire Death was my first Bathory album and my favorite. Hail the Hordes, long live Quorthon!... and if you're into them, can you do a video for Celtic Frost in the future?

This video gave me chills. I discovered them in 1985 and was blown away. I tried to get my metal friends into Bathory and most of them couldn't ditch their paradigms of traditional metal to understand what was going on in the early albums. True story, there were 2 separate occasions where I played The Return for 2 different people, and it made both of them puke. Granted, drugs were involved, but I'd never seen them puke before from the same intoxication level sans Bathory. Thank you for this video, you make an old man happy.

You would understand it if you go to the Scandinavian countries the atmosphere they created captured somehow the nature there cold and dark. I picked up Blood on Ice August 1997 on my 17th birthday because I liked the album cover. Loved the album. Found Jubelium I and II at a Circuit City of all places and it introduced me to black metal (that 17 year old me could barely stomach, lol) but it grew on me and Bathory has been one of my most influential bands on my life. In college, a buddy of mine and I made a music video for “The Lake” for his film class. After I married in my 20s, my husband forbade me from listening to metal and told me to get rid of my CDs. I complied ... except for my battered old Bathory CDs (HammerFall was the other that I refused to give away). After his death, I dared to listen to metal again and found that part of my soul was restored. And I was devastated to find that Quorthon had died. Månegarm’s cover of “Mother Earth, Father Thunder,” I credit as reawakening my spirituality, Currently, I am employed by a school district whose mascot is the Vikings (town was founded by Danish lumberjacks in the 1870s) and my teenage daughter has been utterly mortified every time I suggest making the school song “Shores in Flames.”

Those saying Kristian Vikernes credited Bathory are missing the point. He fashioned his whole act lock, stock, and barrel from Quorthon. Choose an ultra cryptic name (Quorthon / Count Grishnackh), record in lo-fi, sing in the most tormented voice possible, don't tour and stay as hidden as possible, suddenly hide your inherited Scandinavian sarcasm when it comes to analyzing your music and pretend to take it as seriously as a cancer diagnosis, claim you're co-opting Satanism to attack Christian norms (nah, it couldn't be that Satanism sells records like nothing on earth), then start dabbling in Viking dungeons and dragons shit. I suppose I give Kristian points for at least acknowledging Quorthon "Mats Sundin" Forsberg as influence, whereas Quorthon lied his ass off about Venom. OTOH, it's as if Varg has never really been honest with himself and said "I admit it, half of this shit I just adopted from some Swede who was five years ahead of the curve."
