This was Madonna answering the backlash after the controversial period with Erotica and her Sex book. She’s saying other people can talk about her in a sexual way but when she owns the conversation it’s too shocking. I love at the end when she says “ would you like me better if I was?” If you apologize for your beliefs people will just move on to the next thing. Like you always say, just be yourself!

Before saying the line about 'would you like me better if I was' she said 'would it sound better if I was a man?'...'would you like me better if I was?. Which is so true, its fine for a man to be sexual and talk about sex and express themselves in an ivertly sexua and sexualised way, but a woman to do so is/was taboo and wasn't considered 'ladylike' and she'd be labelled a slut or nymph. There's that double standard. Which is beyond true, even today, in some ways, too. But back in the early 1990s it was u heard of for a female artist to be overtly sexual and talk about it so openly as Madonna did. By her doing so she shaped what was ro come for female artists and acts and their ability to say, do, be and express themselves totally without having to apologise for it and feel trapped by it being taboo. She did so much for female artists, and she basically did it all on her own at the very leak of her career too when she could have lost everything because kf Erotica and her Sex Book.

Although the song could well refer to a relationship, the main thrust of the message is to the media and critics of her Erotica album and SEX book that so threatened the moral majority that their heads practically exploded. It is the ultimate kiss off to her detractors and is one of the reasons that she is a legend in the gay community. So enjoyed your reaction! BTW, Madonna is very well known for her choreography and dance moves; particularly in her live shows. You should check some of them out!

She's not talking about a boyfriend. She's talking about society. Back then, the religious right had a lot of say in our lives. In today's world, they cry about cancel culture, but they were the ones doing it back in the day. Madonna is one of the reasons why they are not considered the moral majority anymore. This video is about not putting people in a box, tying them down, and making them act or be a certain way. What she is saying is who tf made up these rules that we are all supposed to live by and why, me as a female (or, more importantly, females as a whole) is the only one that can't talk about sex or human nature, when the men in their videos/ music had all kinds of sexual sht going on and nobody was saying sht to them about it.

Well, my parents were a pastor and Pastor‘s wife, and did not dislike Madonna at all. After the erotica album and thesex book, most of the country have become tired of Madonna. All forms of media had become tired of Madonna. There was an oversaturation of Madonna and people Had begun to find her distasteful. I don’t think the religious right had much to do with it. And by the way, cancel culture is sick and is a disease… I wouldn’t applaud it.

I think "the boyfriend" in the lyrics is the bigotery, the press, all people who treated her as a whore in the Eroitca Era for having an opinion, for express herself, for having sexuality!! Till then a sexy woman in the music industry, dominated by men, was used as a sex object, and Madonna showed she was an sex subject, as a woman has also sexuality but she owns and decided about her sexuality! I'm glad you appreciate how different every Madonna single you've listened to. She's done almost every genre imaginable except opera although the Evita soundtrack is considered a rock opera but it doesn't matter as it's evident you can't box a Madonna sound whenever you first hear a new song from her. That's what still differentiates her from today's Gaga's, Riris, Beyonce's, Ari's and Swifties. Truly a chameleon among all artists. That's one of her many legacies.

ACTUALLY… you should watch privately or on your channel the Night Line interview with Madonna when she discusses the song “Justify My Love”…. She got a lot of shyt in those days and she explains the problem with society… it’s EPIC.. She's talking about society. Human nature. We judge. Cynicism. She was hitting back at the media after doing her sex book. Conservatism has been on the rise since then. Both, society and conservative people in politics and the news were degrading her for being "too sexual" with her music videos. They were doing it to rappers as well. Rappers went to court cause the establishment was trying to censure them for explicit lyrics. She was criticizing hypocritical politicians and conservative narrow-minded people. This is her way of telling them to f, off. She was great. To this day the media are trying to put her down but after four decades she learned how to hit back and got more power than before. But she's been dealing with the media and even Trump came for her trying to diminish her. This woman is gonna be history-making with her art. She calls herself a "freedom fighter".
