A shallow look at the Napster lawsuit may leave you thinking that Metallica sued the file-sharing service because of the possibility of losing money for themselves, but in actuality they did it to protect smaller artists whose music was being stolen on Napster. Lars Ulrich sued Napster to protect the bands that could not afford to loose money. Ulrich knew that if any band was going to put an end to it, it would be Metallica because they had already earned enough money, and they had enough to sue.
@mattd16597 ай бұрын
This isn’t really the case though. Napster existed at a time when the primary way of consuming music was by buying CDs - yes Napster encouraged illegal file sharing, but it didn’t significantly reduce the money made by either the record labels or artists (Metallica aside) via sales of physical media. File sharing existed alongside physical media. Fast forward 20 years, the primary way of consuming music is now streaming, a system where by the majority of money made goes to the streaming sites and the record labels - the artists have been cut out of the loop entirely. File sharing didn’t cause this, and Metallica didn’t help anything.
@spencerwilliams4616 ай бұрын
Tankies won't understand this. Lol. Well said. Oh and the industry S**t the bed due to the events that began with Napster. It is what it is. Music is less important, less relevant and less meaningful to most.
@kevintanza69686 ай бұрын
@@spencerwilliams461 Exactly. These are the same people who complain about artists not making a living and then complain about an artist defending his right to make a living. It's also this stupid mindset of younger generations who grew up downloading music as if it was nothing. Are the people criticizing Lars for the Napster lawsuit buying records and merch to support the bands they love? Probably not.
@kevintanza69686 ай бұрын
@@mattd1659 You're gaslighting. Napster was just the beginning and it became the norm. Lars might have done it for his own gain but it was also helping other bands in the process.
@mattd16596 ай бұрын
@@kevintanza6968 Not sure you know what gaslighting means, but ok. I know file sharing was common, I was doing it a lot, but my point is that I was also still buying cds. It existed in an ecosystem with each other - that might have been for better or worse in the eyes of record labels, and the further you got into the late 00s the more they clamped down on it. But it’s wrong to say Metallica initiated their lawsuit for purely altruistic reasons. If that was the case, where are they now? Where’s their lawsuit against Spotifys meagre payment system? Why aren’t they fighting for the independent artists who are now cut out of the loop in the streaming system? Who can’t tour because they don’t make enough from streaming? They don’t care because they’re not the ones losing money.

To be fair, digitization was a disaster for artists, rich or poor. Streaming is just not a sustainable model in terms of compensating artists, especially smaller ones who have less power and clout than bands like metallica. Napster might have been more like tape swapping, but everything that followed it was very much not. I get the frustration, but the napster lawsuit made sense even if it wasnt good PR. How are artists going to make music if they cant eat well enough to play?

@@kevintanza6968 Absolutely, I've been a musician since the mid-80s, early 90s and and by the mid to late 2000s I was forced to give up on music completely. You just could not compete anymore with streaming services you can't make a buck of album sales. Screaming platforms suck up all the money and pay the artist zilch! Actually I ended up making more money playing at flea markets with a one-man band for like the last 5 years that I ever did before. Then came covid and annihilated even that! It's a sad State of Affairs for musicians and artists. Demonizing Lars Ulrich & Metallica is ridiculous and stupid. Instead of wasting time attacking musicians and artists, people should be out there supporting what's left of us content creators. This is the number one reason why music on the radio today pretty much sucks and you don't have any good crop of either music or musicians or bands for that matter!

Napster wasn't even like tape sharing. Tape sharing was a lower quality copy of a copy that was passed around friends and associates. Er...In retrospect Metallica was proven right 🤨 Napster was guilty of copyright infringement & severely reduced the royalties received by artists. 360 Record Deals came out of fileshare. It took until 2015 for the record industry to finally move into recovery. It’s value dropped every year from 2000 to a low of $15bn in 2014. And the ecosystem to support emerging or mid-level acts is STILL not there. Even with Spotify’s success the industry’s value last year is still only half of its 1999 peak.

Screw the music industry's value, that's the worst metric of success you could point to as far as how well individual artists are doing. Go play live shows or go see some live performances in small venues and buy the album or merch from the artist directly if you want to support emerging or mid-level acts and stop worrying about how much money the industry is making. We have the tools to make DIY work and ram a spike through the heart of the industry once and for all. Support artists not industry!

In the 80s I had dozens of pirated tapes of live metal shows, including Metallica. I was at the Metallica/Raven show in August '83 in Portland, before Kill 'Em All released, there were dozens of pirated copies from practically every live show they performed recorded, copied and sold by fans right alongside the No Life Till Leather and Metal Up Your Ass demos, cassettes and VHS, Cliff Burton's most famous version of Anesthesia in Chicago just a couple weeks earlier was a fan made VHS bootleg, it's got millions of views on YT and Metallica isn't making a dime off it. HAHAHA!! Annihilator was doing live shows for a couple years before Alice In Hell released, the only way to listen to them outside a live show was to get ahold of a pirated tape, I made 7 or 8 myself, the band knew I was recording them so I could play it for my friends and didn't care, Randy Rampage was a friend of my dad from his days as bassist for DOA along with Chuck Biscuits who gave me my first drum lessons, Randy would give me free tickets to Annihilator and DOA shows.

I'm one of those "nothing in Metallica after Cliff is good" people but I will forever defend Lars/Metallica for their fight against Napster and stealing music. I don't know if anything could have stopped it but when stealing (downloading unauthorized content) is normalized, you're not gonna hurt the Metallicas or the Taylor Swifts, you're killing the independent acts that travel in beat-up vans and rusted trailers playing clubs and small theaters. Metallica and those groups have made their money - there's no way they can ever outspend it. Those small bands that don't have the sponsorship deals are the ones that need every cent to finance shows, buy equipment, and eat are the ones that are the real victims of the "5 bucks for some audio files?!?! I'll just copy buddies files for free!" mentality that Napster and the others have fostered. #LarsWasRight

So much of this is taken extremely out of context, and also there are quite a few incorrect things in this. This seems more like a Lars hate video that stems from seeing countless Lars memes for years, which itself stems from the Napster thing. The reality of the Napster lawsuit, and while yes you have the main points of it right, but you're telling it the same way an ex-girlfriend describes her ex-boyfriend to her current boyfriend, you're only telling the "shitting on Lars" parts. The reality was quite a bit different. And I hate to break it to you but most musicians, bands, the goal is to usually get signed to a label and to be able to book shows, sell tickets, make money from this, make a living as a musician. The band will then become a business, legally, at a certain point in time. And then when bands get super massive, these businesses get that much larger. How exactly do you think it works? For years they put considerable money and effort into making the albums to sell, and made money off the albums, and would go on tour to support the album. Make any argument you want about Radiohead having better sales because fans heard the song first on Napster, it's a load of shit. The argument taking away Napster was going to hurt smaller bands is too a load of shit. Hindsight being 20/20, no one buys albums for decades now, and smaller bands, anyone can release music if they wish on KZbin, even as early as MySpace. These guys saw what the future possibly could hold the second they saw Napster, and rightfully so went after it. I was even one of those usernames on that list. You can look at things realistically, or you can look at things like you did in this video.
