100% agree that after Brave New World (which is A tier for me), their albums get way too long. I think there's some great moments on them and with some editing and better production they could have been great, but yeah... way too long. I'd rate Somewhere in Time higher as I've always enjoyed that album and think Alexander the Great is one of their best songs. Seventh Son is easily A for me (maybe even S), but I agree with you on what followed. A Prayer is F and Fear of the Dark is D and even though there's some good music on the Bayley albums, I find them unlistenable. Good video, as usual.

Iron Maiden was my favorite band as a pre-teen, and even then, I don’t have nostalgia-glasses when looking back on their later work. I remember being excited about seeing “Brave New World” at the store because it’s a cool-looking Maiden album that I hadn’t heard yet, but even at my young age, I could tell it was branded as a return-to-form album and that the golden age of my favorite genres was the 70s and 80s. Still, it was a decent listen, and I was excited to buy “A Matter” when it came out. I remember though that it was not the same as the songs were longer and dragged on whereas the older longer Maiden songs were well-deserved epics. I could tell Bruce’s voice wasn’t the same. Compare his voice on that album to a backtrack like “Deja Vu,” and it’s depressing. This video made me realize though that I haven’t bothered listening to anything after “A Matter” and that now that’s actually three albums I haven’t heard! I just couldn’t bear to hear Bruce’s voice lose anymore of its former magic. I think though that you need to give “Prowler” another shot. “Iron Maiden” was my first album by them, and I didn’t know if it would be just as good as the Dickinson stuff, but the opening track assured me that it was. Also, “The Duelists” has my favorite dual (or duel, haha) guitar harmonies of “Powerslave.” You should give that another listen. It’s miles ahead of “Village” in my opinion. And “Somewhere” in D? I think the other golden-year albums are better, but it’s still a golden year album! Those vocals and guitar harmonies on “Deja Vu”!

I'm also very firmly in the "nothing past Seventh Son has touched the originals" camp when it comes to Maiden. I saw them tour playing exclusively 80s material, and then again playing a bunch of stuff from Brave New World and Dance of Death. The difference in quality between the two was palpable, to the point that I remember a lot of folks in the crowd actually leaving the festival out of boredom for the latter set.

Because they got lazy beginning with No Prayer for the Dying. I had to chuckle when you said the band showed more maturity with the songwriting on Killers than the first album, because most of the songs on Killers are older than what appeared on the album “Iron Maiden”. Wrathchild was originally a bluesy song when it was played live in the pubs and clubs of the late 70s. Purgatory was originally called Floating. A version of The Ides of March, called Thunderburst, was played on the album, Head On, by Samson, whose lead singer was Bruce Dickinson. The only new songs that appeared on Killers are: Murders In The Rue Morgue, Killers, Twilight Zone and Prodigal Son. All the rest of the songs had been played live before Maiden were signed up for a record deal. In fact, the Killers album was heavily criticised by the British music press, because the album had barely any new songs on it. The only new songs on “Iron Maiden” were Running Free, Remember Tomorrow and Phantom Of The Opera. Prowler and Strange World were newish, but had been written originally for their demo, The Soundhouse Tapes, but Strange World was dropped. And all I can say is if you don’t like Remember Tomorrow, you’re not much of a Maiden fan. Edit Afraid To Shoot Strangers was about the Gulf War. X Factor is shite and Blaze doesn’t have a decent voice. He’s awful. Virtual XI is Eleven. And yes, it’s an awful album.

I love BTBAM,Opeth,Tool,Periphery but I feel they do a better job of keeping me engaged for those 10 minutes ya know. Absolutely an iconic band no doubt but inconsistent discography imo. I love LOTR but the new album had the return of the king syndrome where I thought it was gonna end and it just doesn’t stop😂. Regardless whenever they drop a new song or album I’ll always give it a shot. Love the video and love the channel. Also LOVE the wu tang poster in the corner👌😎!!!!!! Huge Wu fan.

your rankings are a bit harsh compared to mine ,but you are so right Iron Maiden is a band that benifits massively from nostalgia and i am not a exception. I literally never had heard a metal song before i saw the music video of number of the beast on my older cousins old vhs tape when i was 13. I literally had no idea what a electric guitar was before then.So Iron Maiden is like one of the GOATS for me .But my god the last few albums have been a drag ,maybe would have been good if were 45 minutes but not these massive boring behemoths . I saw Iron Maiden on the brave new world tour so that album maybe higher than it should be in my mind . I completely agree Senjutsu is fairly ok but it was so bloated i agreed with Razorfist on it .

If I had to rank the albums, the S ranking would stand for "Somewhere in Time" and "Seventh son of a Seventh Son". Absolute masterpieces. Anyways my ranking would be 1. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 2. Somewhere in time (can easily be interchanged with seventh son) 3. Powerslave 4. The Number of the Beast 5. Killers The rest just blurs, i can't compare them

Most of your takes in this are spot on, but Somewhere in Time is a BANGER. The only song that I'm not a huge fan of is Alexander the Great. Caught Somewhere in Time's fast riff after the intro is one of my favorites in Maiden's history. Deja Vu, Long Distance Runner, and Sea of Madness are easy to miss on a first listen, but for me they hold up very well and have awesome moments in each of them. I don't care much for Wasted Years, mainly cause I've heard it a million times, but Stranger is such an awesome moody track with one of Adrian's best solos in my opinion. I fully respect your opinion but for me, Somewhere in Time deserves no less than S tier. Otherwise, great list.

Dude, you just can’t put SIT so low. That’s not how it works ;-) On 7/10 days it’s my #1. To me their best work- together with Powerslave. I never understood why people prefer SSoaSS. Everytime i hear the Refrain of Moonchild my neck itches. The evil that…and clairvoyant are great. From the 2000 era I take DoD. At first I didn’t liked it. The artwork kills me everytime and there are some weak songs, but it works as a whole album. AMOLAD I can’t stand to this day. The singing ….I can’t stand it. It’s overloaded. Senjutsu has some great moments. Hell on earth is a killer and Senjutsu also works for me. I agree with you in terms of the sound. It’s bad an uninspired. They need a good producer who will kick their asses. Interesting video. Keep up the great work. Maybe you do a paradise lost video. The „quest“-dude ranked In requiem on a unholy position….he and I need a chat.

I agree with the comment of “At this point they have more mediocre albums than good ones” but I also think their good albums and all the influence they have overpowers all the bad stuff they’ve done. Calling them overrated? I might not agree with that since, again, I think their good albums are just so influential and bangers. Love the channel btw 💙

This is a super honest ranking for myself Bad: 17. No prayer for the dying 16. X factor 15. Virtual XI Below Average: 14. Senjutsu 13. Dance of death (title track is one of my favorite maiden songs, face in the sand and paschendale is good) 12. Fear of the dark 11. A matter of life and death Good: 10. Killers (good album, but just overrated imo). 9. The final frontier (really impressive for newer maiden) Great: 8. Piece of mind (the deeper cuts hinder this album but it is still great). 7. Brave new world (even the long songs are pretty great on this one). 6. Iron maiden (underrated). Classics: 5. Powerslave 4. Seventh son of a seventh son 3. Book of souls (I truly love this album from front to back I don't understand the hate this album gets). 2. Somewhere in time 1. The number of the beast

Unpopular opinions but honestly I agree with most of the points you brought up although Somewhere in time doesnt deserve D, its not as bad as the later stuff. For me Iron Maiden stopped being great after Powerslave. After that the albums were either okay (somewhere in time, seventh son, and fear of the dark) or just boring with some good songs. And also the blaze Era of iron maiden is good when Bruce sings the songs. When I saw them live they did sign of the cross and the clansman and not gonna lie it kinda made me a fan of those songs.

This was fun and I can see why you ranked things where you did... with a couple of exceptions 😉 Somewhere in time is B tier and better than a lot of the albums ranked above it. 7th son is my favourite by them, one of my favourite all time albums, and is near to perfect as an album can be. I don't think I'd rank any 2000's maiden higher than D tbh, it just all sounds so flat, dull, and turgid. Seems like an endurance trial to get through them all in order. I like X Factor, it's so dark and doomy, but like later maiden goes on too long. Have you done tier lists for Fear Factory, Static-X or Strapping Young Lad yet? Would love to see some of those discussed.
@sadekx52512 жыл бұрын
It's obvious you are not the biggest Iron Maiden fan nor did you grow up listening to them, but damn your ranking is all over the place 😄Having discovered them in the early 80's I would place the first 7 albums in the S-A tiers,all the 90's catalog in the F tier and the 200 onward A-B tiers, Since Martin B stopped producing their albums they REALLY need a real produce to direct Steve's out of control "prog" direction. But you were kinda against the fact that people think Iron Maiden is one of the biggest heavy metal band of all time. Who else has done it better? Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath? all those have stinkers too. Cheers mate.

Long term Maiden fan since I was a kid, and I have a hard time disagreeing with too much of what you've said here. The newer Maiden albums have some absolutely amazing writing and performances sprinkled throughout, but between being overly long, the awful production/lack of mastering, and Bruce's voice fading, it's pretty hard to rank them up with their classics. I also agree about the late 80s-early 90s albums. Some great moments, but also some very throwaway, cheesy stuff too. Your S-B is their strongest, most consistent work.
@nickroberts68848 ай бұрын
I pretty much agree with you apart from Somewhere in Time which I rank as number one. I think Bruce's voice has got steadily worse with maiden and I also can't really see why they need four guitars lol. I thought disk one on Senjutsu was utter crap, but disk two was great. Im pretty sure on that album and book of Souls Harris was the producer which mught explain the riddiculous length of some of the songs. I saw rhem on the Dance of Death and a Matter of Life and Death tours and they kick ass live. Also Bruce sings really well on his new solo album so maybe its a mixing thing with maiden. Ill always love them though. Great vid dude.
@marcelo.bassalo8 ай бұрын
Somewhere in Time being D tier is sacrilegious but to each their own. It's way better than their debut and deserves at least a high B low A. No Prayer for the Dying is a D but has a few gems. X Factor is low D and Virtual IX is an F (and I like Blaze's solo stuff!). I like the mixing on AMOLAD so I'd place it right above Fear of The Dark as a High C. The Final Frontier is a B, better than the their debut aswell. Starblind, Coming Home, Mother of Mercy, The Talisman... killer tracks. The Book of Souls is low D and Senjutsu is their lowest album except for Virtual IX.
@nikolasnavarro4161 Жыл бұрын
Doing my tier list here too, just for fun: S - The Number of the Beast. A - Seventh Son; Powerslave; Somewhere in Time; Dance of Death. B - Killers; Piece of Mind. C - Maiden; Brave New World; Fear of the Dark. D - No Prayer for the Dying; A Matter of Life and Death; The Book of Souls. F - X Factor; Virtual XI; Senjutsu; The Final Frontier. As a die-hard Maiden fan, I know this is extremely controversial. I do think they're one of the greatest of all time and definitely my favorite of all time. But it is what it is... Maiden, for me, have some of the highest highs in classic Heavy Metal though. It's because I'm such a fan that it hurts to see they've been so inconsistent from the 90s onwards, but, again, in my opinion, nothing tops their 80s stint. I do, however, feel like Dance of Death is a severely underrated album amongst the fans. It's, for sure, their best blend of progressiveness with their signature sound and I strongly recommend every Maiden fan to revist it every now and again. Paschendale, Montsegur and Rainmaker are the holy trinity of this album for me. All in all, this is MY OPINION. People are more than welcome to disagree. Even though I disagree with the tier lists sometime, I love this channel and what it represents to our community!

I would have asked you countless times to do this if I'd realize I haven't watched a Iron Maiden ranking from! I'm just curious to know your opinions on them, no "this is absurd have you even listened to that record"s at this point

Thank you for being true to what you feel! I agree with you that Iron Maiden is an overrated band. In the 80s they weren't overrated because then they were great but the quality has sunk over the last 30 years (?). Many people are nostalgic. I don't really like "metal" so I get nostalgic over Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix and such... For me, I would rank Iron Maiden's albums vaguely like this: Middle tier: first two albums Over middle: Number of the beast up until Fear of the dark. My favorite IM album is Somewhere in time but not even that one reaches the absolute top for me. Don't have a clue and totally uninterested: Blaze albums Below middle: reunion albums. Too long, too boring, too flat production. I stopped listening after Final frontier which I thought was ok. I tried listening to both Book of souls and Sinjutsu but didn't make it past the second songs, bored to tears. If I'm longing for something else to listen too, why shouldn't I?

Unpopular opinion: i agreed with most things in this vid (i think Judas Priest is what Iron Maiden needed or actually had to be in the 2000's, mainly with Juda's 2 last albums, which are 1000x times better than Iron Maiden's last 2 albums). Note: only thing I hated is Somewhere in time in D (that album is 99,9% sure an S tier for me and most people here)

Actually they are the exact opposite. They are an album band; every track of they're greatest records is filled with wonderful solos, melodies, dynamics and musical passeges. The singles are catchy and good songs, but the band gives its best if you experience other album tracks.
@blackmamba56592 жыл бұрын
An example is Seventh Son of a Seventh Son: the single of that album which is Can I Play With Madness it's easily the worst track, meanwhile all the other tracks are beautiful crafted songs with so many incredible transitions and melodies which is not even fair to other bands.
