It's good to see some adept lance recognition. Near release, the strong poke hate was so intense that anything but striker was considered trash, and the loss of the traditional counter attack was making adept an extra spicy choice in lobbies... But oh god it is so SATISFYING to feel like an unkillable parry god that takes no chip damage, can counter chain for multi-hit attacks, and needs no guard skill to counter everything.

Controversial opinion: I like the strong poke better than the triple poke. It just *feels* better imo. I personally think it would be great if lance was given the ability to do a strong poke at any time by holding down the attack button similar to how charged shells work for gunlance.

Just stumbled upon your channel! Love the effort you put into these short, yet extremely helpful tidbits on the transition from World to GU. Having a fairly hard time myself adjusting to GU's way of handling the Lance! Boy we were spoiled indeed, but this video definitely helped a lot. Looking forward to your video on the Hunting Horn. Now that one's somewhat of a change as well to play in GU.. Oh, and I subscribed, of course!

Having tried out the Lance in MHGU after playing it for hundreds of hours in MHW, I have to say that the transition for this specific weapon class has been the roughest. In contrast, transitioning from Charge Blade in MHW to Valor Charge Blade in MHGU has been much smoother and easier. I agree with your assessments about the styles. I have found that Striker lance is the one that feels closest to World's style (mostly because of the lack of that stupid multi-hitting third poke), but it still feels incredibly clunky. Whereas World's movement system improvements made your character extremely responsive even on Lance, playing Lance in MHGU makes you feel like you're controlling a freighter or a tank. Specifically, a freighter/tank that flinches at the slightest wind press. Fighting monsters that wind press you or simply move around a lot like Garuga or Gypceros is just a nightmare with Lance. That, and the fact that Guard+2 in MHGU still leads to lots of blockstun from many monster attacks, means that I'll be skipping Lance in MHGU. The motion values for Striker Lance may make it one of the better Blademaster weapons, but if playing it feels as awful as I have experienced it, then it's not worth the effort for me.

I feel that Valor Lance is under-rated. Valor Lance doesnt offer the damage of Striker Lance but offers quick access to most of your moves except the counter. The combo strings Valor Lance offers are tons of fun and it turns an already aggressive weapon even more aggressive. You can just GP through everything and continue an infinite combo loop and getting into Valor isnt difficult either. The Shield Bash GP is also another form of forward repositioning mid combo similar to forward hops in MHW Lance. While Striker Lance's damage is insane, Valor Lance's moveset is fluid and opens up so many options in combat and can be approached with Guard Lancers or Evade Lancers. I personally use a mixture of both when playing Valor Lance. I play Evade Lance while building into Valor and an extremely aggressive Guard Lance while in Valor and if I can't counter or GP something with the shield bash then I can just evade the attack instead. It's definitely a departure from traditional Lancing but I absolutely love it.

I agree! It's the only style that makes up for Lance's severe shortcomings in GU (talking about its mechanics, not its damage output- Striker Lance may be the #2 or 3 weapon in solo TA, but it's abysmal for online play and still outclassed by Valor HBG and sometimes Valor LS anyway, and more importantly, it is not fun to play whatsoever IMO). The fact that the charge and counter are locked behind the bash means both that the weapon has that little bit of extra nuance when using those abilities and that players are pushed to discover and make use of the style's ability to counter multiple-attack monster combos by using bash into counter. The stanced charge gets the grounded aerial from 4U, while the other stance attack is a solid option for headsniping a turning monster without changing your position at all. The bash canceling the drill thrust and comboing into thrust 1 means it's not crippled in terms of its basic combo the same way the other non-Striker styles are, though unfortunately, like Striker, it doesn't get the hyperarmour sweep. All in all, it's a fun and unique style, and like a few valor styles it actually feels like it could be fleshed out into its own weapon in the future, which I hope it is.

Goodness, that Tigrex-poking clip is just glorious! I used to play the Striker Lance but I followed the popular route with evasion skills + Enraged Guard. I've never thought of focusing on the charging poke at all (plus I didn't know that it's strongest for the Striker style). Nowadays, I mainly use Aerial (it's really good for support so no tripping from me! XD) with a paralysing lance, but I'll have to give Striker + Charge poke a try ASAP!

Lance was my secondary in MHW with SnS being my main. I'm gonna give Lance a shot as my main weapon in MHGU and see how it goes. Although, I'm still super early into the game so I'll have to wait and see. SnS in MHGU looks pretty great too, so maybe I'll end up doing what I did in MHW where I swap between SnS and Lance depending on the monster.

After mastering LS, the second weapon I mastered is LBG. Then DBs and lance. Dbs and lance represents the Strongest melee attack style and the most offensive style in the game. They are all extremely fun to work with and elemental for both of them is recommended over raw.

Awesome music in the background! If there is one thing I'd like to see some experimentation in balancing is, is the multi hits. I have a mod for lance right now that changes up some ways attacks work. Lance was great in World but damn did it unintentionally get nerfed in Iceborne due to how aggressive and damaging monsters got. That's why I use the mod. I'm disappointed with its performance in Iceborne 😥 Anyways, the mod is unique with some of the attacks hitting multiple times. Like A LOT. Charged Power Counter hits 12 times... Similar to how the Drill attacks work in GU... but on steroids. The damage can be BONKERS. And it got me thinking, instead of a flat damage bonus to MVs, you can potentially use this as a different way of balancing with trade offs. The trade off is that you're stuck in the animation longer from the hitlag as well as it EATS your sharpness. So now you need to manage your sharpness gauge more often. It also makes element and ailments much, much more attractive. It makes Lance much more unique, if not a bit OP in the mod's current build. But that's beside the point. I'd like to see more multi hit weapons, similar to Savage Axe with Charge Blade. Lance could be really unique if it was a "Heavy" weapon that specializes in multi hits with medium to medium low MVs that actually works it way out to having high MVs at the cost of sharpness and sometimes wonky commitments with its attack animations.

You got some things wrong, though keeping in mind that the video is directed at people who played World first, one of those things isn't that important (or something any of them would notice). First, you say Striker only loses the aerial and backsweep finisher. It loses one other attack, which is the XA sweep. It loses the sweep, which not only gives you hyperarmour for its own duration, it gives you hyperarmour for your *entire combo.* That means that if you sweep then thrust twice (XA A A), and something that would trip you hits you during the third thrust, you will NOT be tripped. Barely anybody seems to know about this for some reason, even though it's one of the weapon's fundamentals. Since you didn't even mention that Striker loses it, I'm guessing you didn't know about this, either. Second, on the styles that do have the sweep, its animation is slower and has more recovery (endlag) than in other titles, even third gen (it's sped up a little in 4U and World, thankfully). What this means is that your bread and butter (or what should be your bread and butter) of XA A A takes about twice as long in total as it does in 4U or World, and eats 5 points of sharpness instead of 3 (so 66% more), while dealing only 26% more MV. And for striker you can't use thrusts with hyperarmour at all unless you use castle/fortress walls (which have horrible uptime), pushing even more bias toward the boring and extremely disruptive forward charge finisher with its single-hit, ultra-fast, spammable 67 MV. Third, losing those two finishers, in particular the aerial finisher, means losing one other thing. Your regular finisher combos into A1/X1/XA1, but your aerial finisher combos into A2/X2/XA2. This is important because A3/X3 deals more damage than 1 or 2 (or any XA), so while you won't be able to attack for as long without resetting, the aerial finisher into AA will have higher DPS than the regular finisher into AAA, making better use of short openings (where the regular finisher would manage 50+22+22 MV but the aerial would manage 50+22+27, or in the case of the drill thrust, 50+22+15+15+15, though you'll need a longer opening for that than you'd need for the 50+22+22 to begin with). However, this is not important in World or with most styles in GU. It is only important in 4U and for Valor style, the reason being that the aerial finisher in GU and World both has a longer animation overall and cannot be cancelled. The regular (XA XA in valor mode to begin the charge) valor aerial finisher is actually the same as the one the other styles in GU have, but if you press XA while in valor stance, you do the 4U charge (which is the only way to do so in GU), which is almost identical except that your aerial finisher has a faster animation, and you can press X about 1-3 frames after pressing forward+B to vault to use the aerial finisher without leaving the ground at all, which compared to a regular finisher will have the same MV, take the same amount of time, have a higher hitbox (so it can hit higher targets the regular finisher might miss) and build up mount status, in addition to comboing into A2/X2/XA2. The World/regular GU aerial finisher is too slow for that knowledge to really be worthwhile, sadly, removing a little bit of nuance and complexity from the weapon- A common theme when comparing 4U's Lance to any other version of Lance. 3.5 is that Valor style DOES get the 4U charge, though only out of Valor stance. This gives it the dubious honour of being perhaps the SAFEST weapon to mount with, since the grounded aerial is so much faster and safer than other aerial attacks, in addition to giving it back some of the nuance from 4U that other styles lose (or have overshadowed by restrictions and bad design decisions). On a personal note, Valor is the only style of Lance I consider worth touching in GU, after learning the intricacies of each one, despite the fact that, like striker, it unfortunately lacks the sweep, meaning it is effectively only good for solo or playing with gunners. The others range from boring to just horrible. Fourth, Guild Lance can counter after the third thrust, though the benefit of this is negligible due to the length of the drill thrust. This is actually something that a World player would take for granted, since World Lance can too, but I don't think you mentioned that striker and aerial style can only counter after the first and second thrust like in 4U (and valor can only counter after the shield bash GP, though it can use that even after the third thrust as well, and adept cannot counter at all, but can only use the adept guard, which it cannot do right after a regular attack).

Also, I know this kind of thing is an exercise in futility, but my ideal Lance (as one of probably like ten people tops outside of Capcom that are fully familiar with ALL of the weapon's nuances and mechanics over each of the games since FU) would be based on 4U's Lance (BY FAR where the weapon peaked, in my opinion), complete with (when compared to third gen) its additional two finishers and its additional combos (finisher couldn't combo into an upward thrust or a counter in 3U, which was a big downside to using it and limited the weapon's forward mobility significantly, though its bash had a hugely oversized hitbox to make up for it back then), WITHOUT the counter after the third thrust (as that removes some of the risk/reward of using the third thrust), but making the counter combo into X1/A1/XA1 instead of X2/A2/XA2 (so you could still counter-sweep-thrust-repeat, with the reward of a counter being entirely frontloaded instead of partially backloaded by a quicker A3), and with World's backward guard advance (but not the forward evade or side guard advances, which I feel together make evasion and guard advancing redundant, usually to the detriment of evasion) and little three-hit hopping attack off of guard advances. Powerguard is a HUGE detriment to the weapon when it comes to mechanical diversity, which means it's a huge detriment when it comes to the weapon being fun to play (at least for me- Some people like it simple and easy). And I think the core of Lance is that to play it optimally you should have to learn what attacks you can counter without guard+, and use evasion+ (or evade window in World) to avoid everything else, but that's simply suboptimal and completely unnecessary in GU and especially World, where in the former case arts and bad moveset balance make guarding and evasion both pretty irrelevant while in the latter there's absolutely no reason to invest in evasion with Lance whatsoever.

In World? If so, you have a few options. Flinch free 1/2 and felyne feet are pretty bad options. Your attacks still get interrupted by attacks that would trip you, though attacks that would only flinch you like DB slashes won't do anything. Flinch free 3 requires much more investment, which means sacrificing other skills, but it completely prevents tripping (since it does so even when you're not attacking, this CAN potentially get you killed or at least cause you to take extra damage in some situations, the same way the rocksteady mantle can). Those are the solutions most people will recommend, and basically they're wrong. These are all bad solutions. I'll tell you something better, which is that if you press both attack buttons together, you do a sweep. You probably don't use it much because it's slightly slower and does slightly less damage than a thrust, plus it might trip teammates, but you should be using it at the start of most of your combos when you play online. If you do, it makes you untrippable for the entire combo. So if you sweep, thrust, thrust, you can't be tripped, even during the third thrust, until after you recover from the last thrust. This also works in third and fourth gen, though it's a little less useful in third gen because the sweep is a little slower, and a lot less useful in GU because the sweep is much slower and the only styles that keep the sweep in the first place have that super slow drill thrust. If you appreciate this tip, please spread it to other Lancers you meet or play with. Almost nobody seems to know about it, even though I consider it integral to playing Lance online (or against certain monsters).

I’ve made a set and playstyle I like to call the "Ultimate bro tank" with the lance, it uses the full rustrazor hermitaur set which gives razor sharp, guard up , guard +2, quick sheath, shining blade and I added weakness exploit with my tenderizer +6 OOO charm, with that you can use any lance as long as it has decent white/purple. Striker style of course to take advantage of the guard skills, and the arts are enraged guard, healing shield and corkscrew jab. You can play this insanely aggro ( don’t forget your dash juices tho ) razor sharp and shining blade make it so you basically never have to sharpen your weapon ( works really well with athal-ka lance ) you can use the counter in the middle of your combos to beat any attack, as for the arts, enraged guard is a no brainer, healing shield ensures you don’t ever have to sheathe to heal, as well as helping your bros, ( which is why I call it "bro tank" ) and corkscrew jab is because I had a spot left and I don’t like the free trump cards that are absolute evade and absolute readiness. With that you can stay in the monster’s face h24 while putting out constant damage and healing your pals, hence Ultimate bro tank

The forward hop is something that the Lance should have had for years. The traditional idea that you have to first TURN AROUND and have your back facing the direction you want to roll towards makes the weapon feel unnecessarily cumbersome and unwieldy. World's version of Lance is basically the best the franchise has seen to date.
