A few years ago a 17 y/o who had been driving a Maserati at a high rate of speed in the city hit a 62 y/o man head on and killed him instantly. The battery from the man's truck landed on the sidewalk 3 buildings down from the crash, and the kid tried to flee afterwards. After 6 years, the now 23 y/o was given only 120 days in jail. The man's widow got over $300K in the wrongful death suit, but the loss of her husband, who was just about to retire, has absolutely gutted her life. The teen also had a long list of serious traffic offenses, but those are no problem for the affluent. These cases infuriate me.
@DetectiveTrupo2032 ай бұрын
That's not true, it was 120 days in prison, which is different than jail, and that is an assessment period. He could still be in prison right now, and if he had been released he will be on parole for 5 full years, meaning any additional crime he commits will be a new sentence as well as the rest of this one in prison.

@@DetectiveTrupo203 That's somewhat reassuring. In the weeks leading up to that crash we'd been seeing and hearing him tear thru the neighborhood. I worked at Ferrari and Maserati of Palm Beach 5 years ago as a client advisor and there’s no way that the car wasn’t trackable. They have a built in gps or finder for users who can’t find it in the parking lot. So the fact that cops had to use a License plate reader vs calling Ferrari is wild lol

They make a jammer and disparate police forces don't exactly have 1-to-1 direct lines of communication. They only were aware because it dinged on a plate reader. @@noosphericaltarzan It's not usually the top speed that is helpful, but how quickly a car can slow down and speed up. Not to mention being able to do that without overheating the engine or transmission, or boiling the brake fluid. That said, as far as performance goes; definitely an advantage. But lots of other things in play too (like range as you mentioned). 🙂

@@yayinternets I never really thought about how to realistically escape outside of banter on videos. I just don't see it as possible except for maybe in a real city where you can ditch the vehicle and blend into a crowd in a place that their cameras aren't watching you. But even then, I dunno. I wonder what the stats are on how many attempts succeed and under what circumstances (the car, the environment, the numbers of police involved, and the police department policies that held LE back). I really doubt it's very high, but then I doubt they'd publish it either. If Arkansas state police have near zero escape statistics, then I'd argue the potential outside of an urban area is basically zero if LE really wants to make it impossible. I also feel like we spend a lot of time mocking the runners but not enough time addressing the fact that the outcome is always so much worse than just going to court and dealing with the initial charges. Rhode Islander here. Our state is fairly dense. There's only so much room, and the chances of a crash causing injuries and fatalities to other drivers has to be considered. Bigger states= bigger stretches of road that can be cleared or shut down. More departments are exercising caution about harm coming to their officer, and the general public. Obviously it's important to get the person fleeing, but not at the cost of innocent lives.

Don't forget helicopters. And, I mean, people do get away from the cops sometimes. But it is usually do to the authorities calling off the pursuit out of concern for the public safety. I imagine there are people out there who have the driving skills and powerful enough vehicles to get away from a cop before they have anything more than a description of the vehicle, but it's rare. In fact, I've seen channels on YT that have their super fast cars decked out in cameras that cover every angle and blacked out windows/tags etc, who then go out looking for a cop to try to pull them over so that they can attempt to flee. Who knows how genuine that crap is, though? 🤷🏽♂️
