The MiG-31 was designed to engage not just high-altitude targets like the MiG-25, but low altitude targets like cruise missiles and B-1B. The MiG-25 was quite horrible at low level, not able to break mach 1 below 20,000 feet. It also has a much more advanced avionics suit. It had a PESA radar, a type of electronically scanned array radar (the first to be put in an aircraft). This gave it a wide scan zone that was almost instantaneous since there was no need for mechanical scanning. It also allows for multiple "STT" targets; up for four for the original models. The co-pilot also has an advanced tactical display (kind of like the TID in the F-14) that works with data-link. They were set up to be able to act like mini AWACS with each other. The biggest issue was that the computer system in the original MiG-31 (possible the B as well) would constantly crash when there were a lot of targets it was tracking. Armament wise, it could use the massive R-40R/T of the MiG-25, and the R-33--roughly equivalent to the Phoenix. However, unlike the Phoenix, the R-33 is a fully SARH missile and needs a hard lock to track a target. But with the MiG-31's PESA radar, it can provide targeting data for four such missiles at once. It can't dogfight any better than the MiG-25, though the first two models did have an internal gun. Max g's were limited to something like 4 or 5. It's an impressive aircraft that would be wonderful to fully see in the game, but the fact only Russia has it guarantees we'll not have the data to make a proper module.

@@Spiderman1a It's telling that the Blackbird didn't fly over Soviet territory, though. Even if the MiG-25 and MiG-31 couldn't keep up with the SR-71, they could still plot an intercept and would have been able to lock on. And their missiles could certainly have kept up. There's that notable incident where the Swedes managed a lock on the SR-71. More than once.

@@Xeno426 The SR-71 had ironically an issue with its massive jet wash.. it reflected more radar than the jet itself.. wich means it more than doubled the SR-71 RCS making it easier to track.. however it would be funny if someone fired a missile at the track and the missile would try to track the plume behind the jet instead of the plane itself.. reading before posting this i found that they actually experimented with a mixture of chemicals in the fuel to make the plume radar absorbant ..but its not clear if they ever used it operationally

Just curious as to what mod you are using? The Mod I have does not allow for fuel tanks. The speed breaks do not work and neither does the landing parachute. I know this is based on the Mig-29/Su-37 Flaming cliffs mod so I am expecting no cockpit functionality to speak of. Thanks In Advance!

Do you know what fc3 modules you need to get this mod to work? Probably one of the meanest looking jets with still incredible performance in 2023, props to its designers!

One of the worst understood aircraft of all time. Even the guy who made this video knows nothing about it.🤦‍♂️ Still a major threat 40 years after it was first introduced. In the last year, Russian MiG-31s have scored several air-to-air kills against Ukrainian Su-27 and MiG-29 types because of their incredible altitude, radar, speed and weapons advantages. Put simply, it can score from more than 150 kms away and from 70,000 feet, putting it well outside the range of other types. It can be on the other side of the border and doesn’t even need to enter enemy airspace. The R-37 missile is so fast - around Mach 6 - that by the time it is detected it’s probably too late. Yet bozos on the internet talk about how ‘it can’t dogfight’, as if that even matters. The airframe limit of 4.5G doesn’t limit the jet at 70,000 feet. Nobody is going to be pulling hard manoeuvres up there. And with the kinematic advantages of the MiG-31, why would anyone try to dogfight in it? Morons…🙄

To my knowledge, the primary differences between the mig-25 and mig-31 are engine+airframe modifications along with avionics changes the mig-25 has mig-23 avionics and the mig-31 has mig-29 avionics. also structural issues and engine reliability issues were fixed on the mig-31

MIG-31 has not MIG-29 avionics or at least same as it.. it has a PESA really big radar (biggest and most powerfull mounted in fighter jets until recently) and the avionics are for 2 crew with a RIO controlling the radar and having a full datalink .. when the MIG-29 (at least until late 90s) had a "normal" doppler radar sharing emitter with the SU-27 (using smaller antenna) and had the radar info display in the HUD same as the datalink and no display for either whatsoever in the cockpit .. they probably share some stuff but mostly are different philisofies and hardware

I thought, but I could be mistaken, the difference between a Mig25 vs the Mig31 was they upgraded the engines & it wasn’t a two seat aircraft. Not 100% sure though. When I first saw this mod myself I thought the cockpit was actually two cockpits they merged together because it looked so strange but that’s not what they did & the thick glass etc is actually how it looks! Pretty neat little mod & fun to go up against in the F-14 etc… Nice review.

mig31 is slower than mig25 but has better radar, more fuel and more efficient engines that can survive much more flight hours and second crew member to operate radar and other systems

@@MichaelKellermahn That’s pretty cool. The only “Soviet” class Jet I’ve ever seen in person was a Mig29. You don’t see many Russian planes here in the US

I’ve used the mod and really liked it, but cockpit doesn’t work on MT version with no fix so far. Really annoying.

Does anyone else have the issue with this Mod where the Cockpit doesn't work and is all blocky? I'm trying on both MT version and non-MT version of Openbeta but the MIG-31 cockpit just doesn't work! Thhere is another MiG-31 Mod out there which is more simple and it work ok, but the JSN64 version isn't happening for me. I have heaps of other Mods and i'm following the readme file but still no joy...
