"This song is about the discovery of one of the members of the Lost Franklin Expedition that attempted to navigate the Canadian northwest passage in the late 1840's. The only bodies recovered to this day are the three men that died in the first winter (1845) while camped on Beechey Island. The three men's names are John Torrington, John Hartnell, and William Braine. They are said to have died of pneumonia and lead poisoning. It is said that Adrian Smith was inspired to write this song after speaking to a man who had recently excavated bodies mummified in the arctic. The bodies of the three men were exhumed between the years of 1984-1986, which coincides with when the song would have been written."

I always think of this album as space themed for some reason and this song makes me think of a lost astronaut on a strange new planet
@mikeharry1799 Жыл бұрын
@@merciatreasurehunting6244 "Stranger in a Strange Land is a 1961 science fiction novel by American author Robert A. Heinlein. It tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who comes to Earth in early adulthood after being born on the planet Mars and raised by Martians, and explores his interaction with and eventual transformation of Terran culture. " AFAIK the book coined the term "to grok", i.e. "to really be apt at something", and is a classic of science fiction literature.
@marcgrote7540 Жыл бұрын
@mike harry that is true, but I read an interview with Adrian back around 1986 or 1987 when the album came out & he said specifically that he based the song on the Franklin Expedition after hearing about it.

"the number of the beast " it was more successful and famous to America , but musically " Seventh son of a Seventh son" , "powerlsave" and "somewhere in time" its the real deal and another level! ( And when u finish more Maiden songs and u have experience and your ears are familiar with Maiden, u can react two first albums with Paul di Anno on vocals !!!)

Thanks for another great reaction, geezer👍🏻 Another great Iron Maiden history lesson. This one's about artic explorers. Adrian Smith is, in my opinion, the greatest folk/blues guitarist to hail from England. I'm a fellow Londoner, born just up the road from where they were formed and I've been a Maiden fan since 1980, when I was 10. I may be a little biased but they are the greatest band in the world with the best fans on the planet. Up the Irons!!!

This is one of the songs that turned me on to metal and Iron Maiden. I had heard Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and others but nothing spoke to me. Then I encountered this song and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, the album. This was in 1990 when I was 13 and had a friend who was trying to explain why metal was the only "good" music. I've been a Maiden fan ever since and have come to appreciate the other bands I mentioned as well, for the most part. Maiden is my #1. Up the Irons!

Pity they don't do that now.Amazing how a band doesn't recognise its finest work.I think it must be something to do with Bruce not being happy with this period of maiden, having been forced to over tour and then suffering from exhaustion and writers block.He didn't contribute anything to the writing of this album, it is entirely composed by Adrian Smith and Steve Harris, independently of each other, Except dejà vu, which was also written by David Murray.

Remember, there was no CD format for albums when this came out in 1986. It was just vinyl, and you can only put so much music on vinyl before the sound quality drops off. This album is 51+ minutes, which was a LONG album back then, stretching the limits sonically. Powerslave (1984) was the same length. Contrast with lame ass efforts from certain big bands during that period (Van Halen Diver Down - 31 min., Van Halen 1984 - 33 min.), and you see Maiden provided way more bang for the buck (with no filler tracks or cover songs to take up space on the album).

To me "The Number of the Beast" is a bit overrated. Yes, this albun made them big, yes there are many great anthems in it (though my favorites are "Children if the Damned" and "the prisoner"... But for me, powerslave, somewhere in time and seventh son are their most perfect albums in their composition and feel. I love pretty much every kein maiden and Bruce Dickinson album anyway, so... Whatever you guys think... I will not debate it either 😁 By the way, blaze bailey's solo stuff is actually quite good, you might enjoy that much more than the maiden albums with him. Give him a shot, I think, even if not blown away, you may be pleasantly surprised.
