Clinical Psychologist, Oriane Macfarlane of Well Mind & Body Psychology takes you through a 9min ACT mindfulness of the breath exercise, it is a simple, and yet powerful mindfulness practice. It brings our awareness and focus to the physical sensation of breathing, such as the rise and fall of the belly, or the sensations of air as it travels in and out of your nostrils.
Our breath is constantly with us, so it’s a ready and available focus point no matter where we are, and can be thought of as an anchor. So when we find ourselves experiencing anxiety, stress, or heightened emotion, we can direct our focus to our breathing, as a way of bringing ourselves back into the present moment, and increase our sense of choice with regards to what we focus on or do next.
Mindfulness of breath may not necessarily make us feel calmer or more relaxed, although sometimes this can be what happens.
Over the past two or so decades Mindfulness Meditation has become a well integrated part of many psychological treatments, and has even become quite common place in our everyday language. It’s been successfully shown to help with overall emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing, and it has been incorporated into treatment approaches such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT).
Research has shown that with regular practice mindfulness meditation is associated with lower levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and rumination. It has also been associated with increased life satisfaction, coping skills, self-esteem, concentration, and optimism.
