Yes, and yes. Also, since the boards weren't prefinished, when they shrink (this summer), those edges will be exposed, with no finish applied. The grey water stains will creep behind the stain (hope they used different than the last video, that was interior stain), and not much can be done, other than strip it and paint it. But definitely, he needs to cut a line at least 3-4" above grade, and seal that cut end really damn well. If not, it will look pretty bad by the end of the year.

To prevent the wood rotting from contact with the ground, you should have installed a 2 × 6 horizontally on the bottom. The vertical boards then are installed resting on that board. When they rot, all you have to do is replace that bottom 2 × 6 rather than having to replace all the vertical boards. I have wood fence all around my house, and that is the standard way they are installed these days.

Since you chose to place the boards at grade, they will absorb moisture and rot sooner. To help delay this, add 6-10” of a preservative painted on at the base of your boards. You could paint the entire fence with the preservative. In the long-term it’s a fence that will likely have plants in front of it that, and you will be pleased you took the time to help mitigate the rot. Also, you need to screw or nail from the outside of the board to prevent warp as the wood continues to cure. The way it is now will just pop this nails right out as it cures and warps. Otherwise, it is a great add to the property.
@paulcrane20108 ай бұрын
Looks great Matt and Kirsten. Butted up depending on moisture level you’re likely to get enough expansion to pop the odd board and distort others . I’d generally leave at least quarter inch either side. Depending on prevailing wind sometimes more so it’s not just a big sail. Maybe scrape out below planks too as touching the ground will capillary from the soils and not allow the timbers to dry after rain resulting in quicker rot times. Hope it all works for you. Love the posts. Great viewing 😊

Love you guys and the hard work you do and your great relationship. I hate to tell you but you do NOT box the boards tight against each other for several reasons. One is that the boards will shrink and expand differently and gaps will differ and not look good. The more important (especially in an area that gets storms is that a gap is NEEDED so the wood doesn’t act like a sail and get destroyed or blown off. Your best bet if you want privacy is called a box style, where you have boards on both sides that slightly overlap each other! In addition, you DON’T want the boards to directly touch the ground as they will rot much quicker. Good luck..

As you start putting up the planks you are going to notice the imperfections in the grain and veins of the wood. The thing is once you get the whole fence up it looks totally different than you expect. Believe me I have seen people use shipping pallets to built furniture for their living room and bed rooms. It turns out fabulous. The ugliness you she in each individual board ends up giving what you build awesome character. Don't sweat it, keep doing the fence project with the same lumber just space out the ugly boards so they aren't together in one area or too close together.

Use some type of horizontal member across the top as a brace when the pickets start to wharp. 7. Use treated post and enough concrete(100lbs?) so that when they rot...they can be drilled-out and replaced. Hindsight is 20/20 and Everyones a builder! 😁

Matt you should run a chalk line to get a straight cut on your fence top. the expansion and contraction will eventually give you gaps in the fence . you live in a very wet climate so expansion will be fairly obvious at some point. I hope you weatherproofed the wood as it does not look like pressure treated wood. you two rock, as always. I am so happy for you two creating your own homestead , making your dreams a reality. god bless you and yours be safe !!!!

I always liked to build my wood fences by alternating the panels on each side with a slight overlap. You still get privacy and wind can flow through a little. And, where I live if you don't get the boards off the ground a little bit you will get rot, and then termites. We also seal our fences as the EPA has wood treatment so weak these days its almost useless after a couple of years. Enjoyed your video!

I'm never critical.. Just also have to add.. having those boards to flush to the earth makes me nervous as good as it looks going to rot... OK NO MORE OUT OF ME you guys are killing it!!

Putting in the fasteners in from the back means very little screw thread grip. The boards may swell and then shrink and then start falling off. You all are great fun to watch. Never say give up.

in a couple months you might want to install a 1x2 or 1x3 down each joint creating a board on board look that will cover the gaps from shrinking and will look great also

That's a good idea. If it stays up. Taking bets on how long it will 🤔

Dude!!! The first big storm comes up and the wind is going to snap those 4x4s. You need to put boards on Both sides of the fence and spread them out to let wind through them!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of comments here that I agree with, yes to a horizontal gravel board that is sacrificial and takes the rot, yes to face screws or coach bolts, yes to not putting the boards tight together when they are going to warp, yes to not creating a sail by having a 1"gap between the boards. But we love your effort and enthusiasm. I'd have loved to have had a young man like you working for me when I ran a building business. Please know that I, and I'm sure the other "experts", HATE telling you what you should have done, so here's an idea, why don't you tell us your next project and we can get all our "advice" out of our respective systems and just enjoy watching you create your home. I told my wife that if I visited PC I wouldn't be able to help myself from being your labourer! Good luck you two.

best to leave gaps between boards, you guys obviously haven't experienced a hurricane inland on the mountains, love the videos, keep up the good work

Fencing boards should always be minimally spaced to disguise the inevitable... shrinkage (it also reduces the wind load from storms!). If not, spacing will eventually become increasingly unsightly over time. Spacing also makes spraying the edges with a protectorate much easier with a garden sprayer when needed. Also, fastening from the rear will not provide good holding strength and boards will pop off eventually.

Matt...boards on the ground will rot from moisture and the need for a small space between is for expansion and contraction of the wood.

You guys are awesome! horizontal boards are called rails!
