Plenty of guys in the 70's made home made welded up tunnel rams too. I think fabbing your own would still fit the spirirt just fine. I mean after all anybody that could have put those headers together certainly could have put an intake together as well. If you made one you could make it fit properly and give it a bit more runner length to up the torque.

Mentioning oil pressure (at the 15:05 mark) no less an authority on engines than Bill (Grumpy) Jenkins said that you need around 10 pounds at idle, and then 6 pounds per 1000 rpm. He didn't do too bad at the strip with his methods of engine setup.

I was bit by a not happy distributor gear once. Less than 3k miles on my new 460. The cam gear wore, broke and took my cam with it. Young, dumb and did not know better at the time. Fixed it and 20 years later im still running that same 460.

Recommend 10# oil pressure for every 1000 rpms. Bare minimum you need 8# oil pressure per 1000 rpm, if you’re under 8# per you’re rolling the dice on a minuscule loss of parasitic drag. Not worth the risk. JD

Hi Andy , Dist gear failure has been an ongoing problem. What i've found from my experiances using the Australian 302/351 C block, (not sure of the US block ) . Have noticed problems across various brands of distributor ( both so called quality brands and general aftermarket ) that being the positioning of the gear on the shaft relative to the centreline of camshaft . I have measured variations of up to .250in , coupled with a lack of lubrication at that point. I incoropate a system to help this. G.M.Australia.

The Ford 5.0 Renegade Winsdor guys here top runners Fastest into low all used 150- 200 psi oil pressure and never had an issue with bearing washout or distributor gear wear. My close bud Eddie is a past 5.0 NMCA NMRA NHRA Renegade Racer with a 306 Winsdor turned it to 9200 rpms peak, 950 Hp Flywheel Vortech Ysi High Boost 8.40 ET 1/4 best in 2005, used 150 psi oil pressure HOT. It's a problem premature distributor gear wear in Pontiac V8, SBC , BBC, Different solutions for each. My own I give them 80 psi to 150 psi . Isky Bronze distributor gears I use even with Flat tappet Tappet Hydraulic or Solid Flat Tappet. They actually last a long time on the Street 10,000 + miles ! The 454 Pickup Gen 6 has a Factory Steel Roller cam no cast Melonized drive gear pressed on it's TRUE Billet Steel all. Bought a GM Melonized gear that is likely CHINA, But I cut grooves slots in the Plastic distributor shaft housing to STRAIGHT Shot Oil the distributor gear. Cold startup the 454 has 85-90 psi oil pressure with Castrol Edge 10w30 Synthetic oil, Moroso Racing oil pump with a 80 psi Purple spring I installed. Pulled the distributor out a few times checking for wear and Zero none is present. Every builder has thier preference how to do it. Pontiac V8 I give the distributor and cam gear a straight shot of .031"-.040" Jet of oil , done different from. CHEVY Old School.

Good catch Andy!! Similar thing happened with me running a Cleveland and switched to an MSD distributor. Half the distributor gear was knife edged and the other side was like new. Only thing was I was running a comp hydraulic flat tappet cam. I found out the oil pump shaft wasn’t centered in the distributor shaft which caused it to wobble. MSD stood behind the distributor but it also took out the cam gear. Like you said in your video things happen for a reason!! Later I checked the main and rod bearings and found out the rods were not machined square!! Half the bearing was to copper and other half still looked new!! So man I believe you when things happen for a reason!! I’m confident you will take the Rocket out of uncle Tony’s Bottle 🏁🤣😂

I have been trying to get a roller cam for the 300 six engines. There are 2 known issues. The bosses for the side cover are in the way of the tie bar roller lifters and the distributor gear. No one makes a melonized or steel gear. The bosses will be milled down and use studs and spacers. Do you have a manufacturer of distributor gears. Every place I call tells me they don't make them and will not let me know who makes them for them. Thanx. BTW. I will not use a bronze gear. In my experience they wear away in a few thousand miles.
