To which number at which line you start loosing crispiness? I think most of tge people would have been interrsted in that and that I will be testing myself when I buy that software.

I upgraded from the CV1 and found the sweet spot to be small and the area of focus across the FOV to be smaller. I remember that when I got my CV1 I had a similar experience, but now when I put it on I get right into the sweet spot. So, I only used the G2 for a week to get used to it like I did my CV1. When I went back to my CV1 after a week in the G2 I noticed that the G2 does have a larger sweet spot and the area of clarity is much much larger, but where it blurs on the sides is about the same. It just stands out more with such a good panel. Loving your Vids.

Same here! Most info on those channels are lacking and VR can not be presented or talked about until you put your device on your own head. It is not something that you can accurately present to other people and they will consider true. Unfortunately this is not that kind of technology. I call the sweet spot in this device on mine unit, completely BS and it is nothing like on MRTV, Tyriel Wood and others advertising channels.

I purchased my HP Reverb G2 two days ago, haven't used VR since Oculus DK2 so the quality difference is spectacular. In terms of sweet spot, yes the center is crisp. Though like others have reported, the spot does feel small and the edges around it are quite noticeably blurry, to the point it is slightly distracting. Now I overcome this by moving my head as opposed to my eyes (as the DK2 trained me to do) - but I'll spend the next week trying to out different placements on my head to see if I can't improve it. I've been playing a lot of Beat Saber, and some of the boxes are a bit blurry, lets see if I can't solve this (average FPS is at least 90 for me). Update 1: It does appear that at least for me, I have to try and tilt the headset so i'm more ore less looking down slightly, and to the left. This is probably because of my head shape (which I think is normal, maybe slightly above normal? but nothing odd thats for sure). Anyway this improved the clarity a lot. TLDR - The screen pushed right into your face, strap it very tight! and adjust the angles, you'll get it! Update 2: Yep, it really is all about moving the headset around until you get it just perfect.It may take hours for you to find it, but its there, somerwhere. The problem is not finding the sweet spot, the problem is that even when you have your eyes directly facing the sweetspot a large part of the FOV is noticeably out of focus. This happens on all headsets when you start looking at the outer edges of the lenses, but in this case it starts happening much closer to the center. I would say that with this headset things start getting out of focus when you look about 40-50% off the center, while other headsets keep the focus until around 70-80% off the center. This effect can also be seen in your video, for example at 2:09, but we can't draw conclusions without knowing the characteristics of the lens in your camera. In my case, the real problem and the reason I had to sell the Reverb G2 was not so much that I could notice the small sweetspot, but that my sight got tired very fast when I used them. Not sure if this was caused by the lenses and the small sweetspot, but it is my best guess as it never happened to me when using my Samsung Odyssey+.

It doesn't happen to me. I play all the time with Assetto Corsa Competizione 2 and all the picture is perfectly in focus for practically all the range of the FOV, it begins to blur only at the very edges. I don't know why some people have this issue but IMO it is clear at this point that's not something tied exclusively to one factor but to multiple ones, since not everyone experiences the same things.
@rogerwennstrom6677

I agree, except that it happens way earlier than 40-50% off center. On my headset i'd say it gets noticeable as early as say 20%.
@freeminer8440
@freeminer8440 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with this although the blur starts earlier, around 30% off center and is worse to the outside of the lens than the inside for me. The key point for me here is the fatigue from using it. I play a lot of sim racing and a lot of Elite Dangerous previously on OG VIVE with Gear VR lens mod. I could easily do 5-6 hours without any tiredness since doing the lens mod as the mod created a very consistent and clear image right across the lenses. The resolution is low of course, but the eyes and brain can cope much better due to the consistency. With the G2, your eyes are constantly trying to make up for the variation in clarity/blur which is exhausting.

Thanks for the video Seb. I have the G2, Rift S and Quest 2. I can tell you by far the G2 is the best of them. I do notice a difference between the Rift S and Quest 2 sweet spot. The Quest 2 seems to be the best. However, the clarity is no comparison. So when everything is less sharp the sweet spot or outside the sweet spot is less noticeable since the quality is not as sharp. However when using the G2 the sweet spot is so crisp its very noticeable when I get outside of it. I think bringing the lenses closer will help as well. I am waiting on my drop in lenses before I do the mod since I wear glasses. And its out of stock at the moment anyhow. Thanks again.

I have the G2, I understand why people would say the sweetspot is narrow, as it's only the absolute center that's a 100% sharp, but it slowly fades to more and more fuzzy. But honestly, the edge of the G2 lens looks about as sharp as the Quest 1 CENTER. This is basically pretty normal for all VR headsets, the G2 is just so high res that you can instantly pick up on the sweetspot dropoff. Overall the visual experience is pretty damn sharp and better than anything else. I do also notice that the stock face gasket moves my eyes too far from the lenses for max sweetspot and FOV, so I already have an odyssey+ cover coming in today as MRTV recommended

Interesting. Initially I felt that my G2’s sweet spot was rather lacking, but after some tinkering I was able to get it much better in my opinion. First I made sure that the IPV was dialed in to my liking. Then I made sure the head strap was lower down on the back of my head, as far as it would go. Then… This is the most important part. Swing the bottom of the headset out from your face ever so much, maybe only a quarter to a half an inch. Swing only the bottom part of the headset (the bottom rim of the cheek/nose portion) pivoting it up just a bit and the sweet spot got much much better for me. Try it and let me know!

I have another test setup: I look at some text (e.g. in a menu of a VR game), then focus my gaze on one spot (e.g. one letter), and then tilt my head left slightly left/right/up/down, while still keeping my gaze fixed on that one spot. I see blurring occur very soon, even while tilting just a tiny bit. If I would estimate the sweet spot, I'd say it's only about 4-5 degrees in size. Important note: I am talking about the absolutely sweet spot in the very middle of the picture. When I say "blurring" I mean that it's no longer 100% sharp, but however the text is still readable just fine. But comparing it to my Index, the difference in size of the sweet spot is absolutely huge. With Index I'd say the sweet spot takes up about at least 50% of the total image, with the G2 I'd say about 5%. To be fair: it could have to do with the difference in resolution and pixel density. With the G2 the resolution and density are a big step up from the Vive and even Index, and so even minor imperfections in the lenses will be more prudent on the G2. I have to say that the god rays are certainly a lot less visible than on the Index and Vive. I see some very small ones on the very edges of the picture, but that's about it. So good job there ;) But to conclude: why you see an almost perfect sweet spot and "we" don't..? I have no idea. It probably has something to do with the difference in eyes or something. Also, a camera lens is not the same as a human eye, keep that in mind.

Sebastian, regarding what you're saying about edge to edge clarity here. Only seeing some chromatic abberation near the edges is not what most people are experiencing, so it will be really interesting to see your comparison with the other headsets that you soon will receive. It's worse than that, the sweet spot is actually so small that even looking at a line of text, a sentence, only a small portion of that text is actually very clear. Of course this may not be as noticeable when just playing a game and not focusing on text, but it is actually so blurry that it could become annoying. You're reminded of it every time you move your pupils away from the center. It doesn't sound like this is your experience with it? What about my "reading text example" - could you find a fairly long/wide piece of text in some game and perform a test? Perhaps have it centered in front of you and read it by only moving your eyes?

Same here, it's so tiny that if you are looking straight ahead at a sentence of 10 words of average size in the very center of the FOV - you can only see two words at most clearly and it's hard to even make out what the letters are at the edges. It's the worse of any headset I've ever tried, or owned (out of 9-10 of them).

I would love to see people to try "actual full games" like Skyrim VR and read books in it or at least menus ect. It is painful just to do it. Your eyes has to constantly shift focus or you move your head around all the time which leads to neck pain and headache. Text heavy games are a torture in this thing.

The G2 probably my 8th VR Headset and I am pretty confident I know how to set them up and wear them. I have tried it with the official gasket, it fits nicely and is comfortable and I cant get much more FOV as when I push it closer I can already see the border of the panel, my IPD is 64. I have then 3D printed the modded gasket and it also does not help with the lenses, they are worse than the Oculus lenses for sure not only the sweetspot but also in edge clarity. The G2 needs something like FFR, we cant really take advantage of the higher resolution at the edges of the FOV anyway, but we need to render them which takes a huge hit on performance.

You need to invite someone local who has reported bad sweetspot on their G2, so that you can try swapping G2's to see if the experience is different (for either of you). That would be a significantly more conclusive test, rather than you just buying a 2nd new one to try out. I suspect the difference is just face shape / varying individual pupil distance from the lens (especially with the deep G2 stock gasket). But I also think there is a chance that the early pre-orders may have had inferior lenses (I got mine delivered in November and have small sweetspot issue).

Icant say its edge-to-edge, but its very good, however i was also the one who claimed the sweetspot of G1 is good. I have also noticed the best for me is IPD around 66mm and slidingto the higher IPD i am receving the slightly better FOV (around 2-3 degrees on TestHMD). The best FOV is on 68 of course but then i am loosing a bit of sharpness so i kept around 66.5. FOV what i have is 99-100 and when i remove the gasket entirely the max what i can see is 101. Default face gasket i perfect for me, i have the small head.

Sebastian: Updated: I have done analysis and close comparison to Quest 2, and have figured out the G2 sweet spot on my headset. I had to use sharp text to get a definite answer. Generally speaking, the G2 lenses have 3 zones: 1. Perfection - Very small rectangular area in the sweet spot of the lens where I try to align my pupils 2. Sweet spot - Not as clear as zone 1, but absolutely more clear than any part of the Quest 2 display. This is more than 1/2 the visible lens area on mine. 3. Blurry outer area of the fov. I don't know if through the lens comparisons can really capture zone 1, but it would definitely give the illusion of a small sweet spot to the eyes because that small area is so very sharp. Original: I have the G2. My IPD is 68, but I have no way to set it to 69. When I adjust binoculars, it is best to go past the best focal point then ease back into the perfect spot. I cannot do this with the G2. On the widest setting it usually reads in the 67-68 range. This might be the issue. Quest 2 doesn't look as clear to me at the focal point, but with the 5 mm range between settings it gives the impression of being forgiving with its sweet spot. I do use G2 Frankenfov mod to get a good fit. My G2 looks very clear in the middle but slightly less focus outside the small range (probably still as good or better than Quest 2), and the outside area is downright blurry. I noticed the ultra sharp portion to be like a long horizontal but very thin vertically shape in the lens. This sharp area is slightly above the center of the lens, and my eyes have to be above center to get acceptable focus in the surrounding area too. I like my G2 clarity but the sweet spot does not look nearly as big as what you demonstrated through the lens. One other note: the portion of the lenses at the top toward the nose permanently look rough and blurry like there are permanent smears inside. That is the same on both sides, but I don't really move my eye focus into that area as I tend to turn my head.

So I have had my G2 for nearly a month now. I need to do a follow up video, as I gave honest but quite negative comments in my first impressions video. I want to have a real good test with my new PC which is not finished yet, as I'm waiting for my very overdue Ryzen 9 5900x, as I want to see how much it improves fps. My experience with the sweet spot is that it is very easy to find and locate every time, its just that its quite small. My issue is that everything within the sweet spot is crystal clear, where as everything outside of the sweet spot is not. My very first experience with the headset in the cliff house, I instantly noticed the difference of the graphics in both areas. The only way that I can explain it is to say that within the sweet spot its rendered at 100% where as outside its 95%. To explain this even further, my first experience of the headset was with Assetto Corsa, the clearest VR racing game that I own. I was sat in the R34 GTR and the steering wheel, arms, gloves and the instruments were the best I have ever seen in VR. Then I glanced at the centre console digital display with my eyes and it was not clear at all. When I turned my head and looked at it, it was instantly sharp. I'm not going to lie, I found this really disappointing, as I was expecting the same clarity across most of the headset as this is a 4k display. My previous headsets that I have used have been the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, I bought the rift as I don't like the Vive wands. When using the Oculus Rift even though its much lower quality, I have never noticed there be a difference in the image across the viewable headset. But to be fair, after testing with a lot more games and sim's, I have to say that this issue varies wildly, and really depends on the graphics of the game\sim. Some things have softer graphics and text fonts and don't look so bad. Where as anything with ultra high quality and sharp text and fonts its very noticeable. Regarding how the lenses work, maybe my expectations were too high, but I'm only going on my previous VR experience. I think the only logical reason people are experiencing differences, could be face shape as mentioned and distance from the lenses. I think quality of vision and experience of high resolution displays, also plays a big part. The problem with higher resolution headsets, is that because of how clear the display is, its really going to highlight the slightest imperfections. If you are perceptible to these or not depends on what your used to. If you have got a 1080p display and have only ever played at 1080p, the G2 is going to look amazing. If you have a 4K display and get the G2 its not going to look any where near as good as your 4K display for example.

The sweetspot can´t be everyones mainproblem! I ordered "my" G2 in the first week of september, a week after heart surgery, when I knew I would be around to be able to use it. I am still waiting for it. The latest bid for a deliverydate is the end of January 2021. This is the fourth or so delivery date update. I held off from playing Half Life Alyx and a lot of games in my Cosmos headset. But after that last delivery update in november I sort of gave up. I really have a pretty good experience of my Vive Cosmos and I decided to play HL Alyx. It really was fantastic. Then I went for Rouge Squadron, another game I have been "saving" for my HP G2. Great experience again in the Cosmos. From the beginning of november until now I have played a lot of VR-games and I really think I have found a kind of sweetspot with the resolution in my Cosmos and the playability with my 1080 Nvidia card. The first game that finally tax my current gpu in VR is MS Flightsimulator 2020. Of course, I pre ordered an Asus TUF 3080 card as soon as it was possible. That card is currently set to arrive in the end of march 2021. But who knows? There might be 4080 cards announced by the time I get delivery. I am actually thinking more and more about just keeping my cosmos. My only problems have been getting warm from wearing the headset during long sessions, and playing games where you shoot with a bow and pull the string (and one controller) close to your face. That throws off the tracking of the controller but I can live with that. Everything else works great and I have about 20 VR-games that all plays great except that one bow-game. At this point I have bought and played all the VR-games I was curious about. I am sorry to say that all these videos about the HP reverb G2 is starting to annoy me. How can seemingly everyone else get their headsets? Your positive videos got me to try VR at all for which I am grateful! But now I will stop viewing. By the time I get my headset and GPU It will probably be replaced by a new model from HP anyway.

Problem fixed (for glass wearers): until two days ago I was completely in agreement with people here about the very small sweet spot and how bad it was when you looked slightly off the center of the sweet spot. Was very frustrated (also have Index /OQ1 and had Samsung Odyssey before) with this fuzzy image out of the dead center of sweet spot on the HP G2. Yesterday I got my Lens Adapters from WidmoVR and problem gone almost entirely - it barely bothers me now. So my conclusion is that when you are wearing glasses both sweet spots have to align perfectly. If you look left/right without moving your head there is a bigger distortion due to the space between glasses and the HP lenses in order not to be touching or they’ll scratch. With the lens adapters there is no space in between - so I suggest you get those . 90% of the problem gone and yes still a bit distortion but minimal - and more of a natural distortion similar to when you do that with glasses outside VR anyway.

Overall, thank f*** for that for all headsets being the same as what a waste of time to wait all the time for something that is different from VR headset to VR headset. You have said that one test is not a accurate test. I am still to test my VR headset as I not satisfied with the sharpness. One other thing that threw me was the fact that the resolution looked very low when I first tried it on. I found a setting in Windows 10 for the HP Reverb G2 that allows you to change the resolution to best quality.

Seb, you need to define what sweet spot means or what you mean by "sweet spot". Many people use that term differently as you know. Sweet spot vs the box, etc. For me the area of greatest clarity is in the direct center, and VERY SMALL... what I perceive to be around 5x5 mm while wearing the headset. Out side of this spot, everything begins to blur increasingly to the edge. For a good experience, I cannot move my eyes around to look at things at all, I have to turn my entire head. This is another phenomenal thing you won't here from any channel. The controllers are total junk and often they do not work properly with steam VR and steam games to the point they are game breaking because you wan't be able to perform actions game expect you to do! I had this issue with Skyrim VR. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it is exactly like you said, everything is F... and you have completely no idea WTF is going on or why game that worked yesterday doesn't work anymore. If your controllers are off while you start the game or battery runs out in the middle, there is a chance that steam VR or game(i can not confirm) will change binding to the controllers with touchpads! Your bindings in steam VR may stay the same but in game you actually can see that the game requires you to do for example touchpad left/right/up/down action. You have to go to steam VR, to controller setup and change to something else, reboot the game(maybe steam VR) and then change back to HP controllers configuration(reboot again). Best idea is to choose one of community config for the game if it exist. Always keep them on while you start the game! Do not ask me does it work all the time because i have completely no clue. I just know that this equipment and software is total junk and does that in a random occasions.

My G2 is horrible with the sweet spot. Not only that but it is off center to the bottom of the lenses so I have to put it way up on my face to find it. Also regardless of IPD I have a very difficult time getting both eyes lined up at the same time. I have had the DK1, DK2, Rift, and CV1 before this, and hundreds of hours in VR. I have never had an issue with eye strain or headache in VR. In DCS I could go all day with the Rift S. I cant go 20 min with my new G2 in DCS without my head hurting, regardless of position, or IPD settings. Mine is nothing like what I am seeing here. I have tried it with the stock gasket, and the FrankenFOV mod. I am going to RMA mine when stocks resupply, and I truly hope my next one is better. But I also have issues with my left ear audio cutting out with head movement, even with reseating it. Its such an unpleasant experience, I dont even want to play DCS anymore. I am seriously thinking about going back to my Rift S until I can get this sorted with the G2. Good news is when it works, the audio is fantastic! Edit: Just writing this and thinking about wearing it, makes my left eye hurt.

I did the velour FrankenFOV mod and immediately without any changes noticed a very large increase in FOV and also a bigger sweet spot and edge to edge clarity, however with the velour mask my eyelashes were touching the lenses and so this led to some discomfort. The velour face mask I think is narrower than the Leather version so I will first try doubling them up and then order the Leather one and give it a try to see if that still gives the increases described above.

First of all, thank you so much for taking time to do this. However the "position" explanation is simply not correct. I've been in VR since 2016 and tried different headsets and the only reason I returned the G2 was because of the sweetspot early falloff. Finding the sweetspot is not an issue, it's how quickly it blurs. I tried EVERYTHING. Removing the insert, adjusting it back and forth. No good. There simply HAVE to be bad units out there. I have the Quest 2 as well and although not as pinsharp in the middle, it is more consistent and using it in flightsims is night and day difference. As other mentioned...someone should test that other unit. Someone who has a bad unit themselves.

I think my big problem with my HP Reverb G2 is that I can't quite get the lens distance to be good...even at the smallest distance between lenses, I think it's like 60mm? I feel like I can see something in my peripheral vision that is distracting and the space in the middle is also distracting, it makes it feel like the image doesn't combine into the best image...I'm trying out the FrankenFOV mod and will let everyone know what happens...

I own the G2 and I noticed that positioning is very important. Not only height on my face but also the angle at which it sits. If the angle is wrong the sweat spot seems very small. I found that opening fpsVr and then looking at text while adjusting the angle of the headset works very well. Personally I feel that even a slight tilt offset makes a big difference on the clarity. In all cases the center seems clear enough to me but the edges vary a lot, not sure if it's my bad eyes though....

I got it from bestware.com(pre-ordered in July) and am one of those that get very narrow sweet spot: It's very clear in the centre, but everything beyond 10 degrees(rough estimation) gets blurry quickly. Tried almost everything what people recommended including, bringing the lenses closer, setting SS in SteamVR to 100% etc. I'm about to return the headset, but still hope there is a solution. Maybe when you get headsets from community it will be sorted out somehow.

Overall I don’t lie the sweet spot with the G2 and edge to edge clarity is the worst I have ever had in any HMD that I have owned. I tried the mod and it helps with the FOV but getting the right tilt of the headset and dialed into the sweet spot is such a pain just to get it passable I am just kind of waiting for something better to come out so I can get into VR again.

Same here. But my ipd is 70 and the G2 only goes up to 68. That's probably the reason why, for me anyway. It would be very helpful if everyone with a lousy sweet spot would also list their ipd.

Which test is it that you are using from the ROV Test tool? I didn't find these numbered squares in the SteamVR "ROV Test FOV & Resolution" environment nor did I see them in screen shots of the standalone version of the tool (testhmd). *EDIT*: In case anybody else is looking for it, I finally found the white-on-black numbered board that Sebastion is using in this G2 sweet spot video. If you purchase the stand-alone version of testhmd (from the developer of the rov tool), which I did for the minimum $3.99 plus $1 extra for the developer, then you can download three different revs or versions. In the "testhmd_win_1.2_Calibrated_Dec_2020" version, the sweet spot test station uses those numbered squares. In the other versions, the sweet spot station is concentric circles. Note that running the testhmd "stand-alone" version still requires you to run SteamVR. In the case of my headset (Oculus Rift S), I just run the executable and put on my headset. In the case of a WMR headset, I guess it gets a little more complicated. Help can be found in the discussion posts on the download page for testhmd.

Have you ever tried to compare the controllers ? Maybe it is worth to do that. In the same room and lightning one set of controllers are working fine and another set and the same HMD does have glitches. Maybe i just have one faulty set of controllers or maybe they are different in quality for some reason.

Received my pre-order in the US IN Dec. Coming from the Rift CV1, the image quality is much improved and I can't remember if the sweet spot is different. Tracking is good, but I do lose tracking in beat saber menu and sometimes during play so I feel that is not as good as the Rift. I also received prescription lenses from widmovr which dramatically improved image quality/sweet spot/ chromatic aberration in comparison to wearing glasses with the G2.

Looking forward to that video for sure.

Hard to improve this, because the surroundings in these videos are not based on computer designed 3D models like in a game. 360 video's will always be stretched out at the edges because they are made with multiple cameras or cameras with multiple lenses with a fixed focus of course. Personally I don't like to watch these video's in VR "The Blue Whale" made me feel quite sick after a few seconds to be honest. LOL

Mine is nowhere near as good as that and quite honestly I'm getting sick of people telling me "I'm doing it wrong". I've been a VR user since the DK2. With one eye closed (removes IPD) and the gasket removed (removes head shape), I can position my vision to get the PERFECT clarity in the middle. Sweet spot is STILL tiny. It's not IPD and it's not head shape. It MAY be something else but I'm certainly not wearing it wrong.

Totally agree. I think the notion that it might be related to how sharp one can see might be a factor. If your eyesight isn't all that good, you can't see very sharp and you won't notice the small sweet spot. Retina resolution differs from person to person.

I have no problems with the sweet spot. I was used to the one of the Rift S and I see no difference (naturally since the G2 is much more clear on the sweet spot you will notice more the difference between the edges and the center if you put your attention on it, but as far as the range distance between when the picture is totally in focus and when it begins to blur then they are practically the same, actually a little better with the G2). Overall I'm totally happy with the headset and a definite upgrade for Sim Racing.

There is variety between the sets: first set I received wasn’t really clear yet since I didn’t have any experience with VR I kept it. After a week the headset appeared faulty - there was a blue vertical line displayed at all times. So I gave it back and claimed the new one. The one I got was much, much clearer than the first one. Also I had the impression that the first headset was overall flimsier and IPD adjustment knob was really loose. The one I have now is just much better than the first one I got.
